HANDLING COACHES

• Never be timid, but don’t incite• Aggressive versus discussion• Never allow them to yell across court at partner• They just want to be heard, so listen to them• Don’t ignore them, but please do not feed the animals• How to end the discussion• Get them on your side• Get them to trust you• Find a way to make them say yes

• Procedure– Whistle; signal; indicate team; start timer; signal number

• Ending– Whistle; get teams on court; signal #; ready

• Keep coach informed– Always be ready with number taken– Inform when two taken

Injuries

• Procedure– 30 seconds to make decision– If player OK, then start play– If sub is to be made, take whatever time is

necessary to safely remove player or clean up blood

Concussion

• If concussion is possible, then error on side of safety and potential liability

• Do not allow player to return• Prepare for disagreement

ALIGNMENT ISSUES

• Develop system to track players– Setter(s) & setter(s) opposite– Setter’s adjacent players– Liberos are a big help

• Warn with correct language if close• Don’t count boards• Keep yourself in the game every rally• Use scorekeeper for assistance

WORKING WITH THE SCOREKEEPER

• Establish & build rapport• Make them feel they are part of the team• Give them a quick pre-test• Ask them what they want on substitutions• Discuss how to handle problems• Common things to look for

– Serving team will never be behind receiving team– Look for sequence of last entry on players– Glance at players’ positions on court unless they have huddled– Compare with visiting team score sheet

REQUESTING SANCTIONS

• Don’t be timid or vindictive• Step out to sideline so there are no doubts

what is going on• Discuss procedure with partner in pre-match

discussion• Don’t give them a break• Don’t rub it in• Don’t try to be cute

DISCRETE SIGNALS

• Use sparingly especially with novice referee• Watch for partner to give you the “HELP” eyes

and anticipate when they might be screened• Consider judgment vs rule• What are they?– Ball handling– Back row situation – Any others

SOCIAL NETWORKING

• Inappropriate for most officiating stuff– The commissioner sucks– Schedule comparison– Fees– Comments on other officials– Comments about coaches– Comments about teams– Comments about match times

• Be very careful of what you say because it will be misinterpreted
