Merici Chapel… Life is going along smoothly, then something happens — a job loss, an accident, sickness, an emotional upset — we run to Jesus or His Blessed Mother. “Help me Lord!!” Why wait until we need a push to go to Jesus. We need Him all the time — peaceful & upsetting times. He’s waiting for you in Merici Chapel. Go have a talk with Jesus at least a few minutes once a week. It will make the rough times in life much smoother.

St. Charles Borromeo Church August 18, 2019

It was ninety-five years ago, September 1924 to be exact, that St Charles Borromeo School welcomed its first students. “St Charles School” consisted of two frame classrooms tacked onto the back of the original frame church; the church and attached classrooms sat

where the Corrigan Gym is today. The rooms were heated with potbelly stoves; plumbing facilities were outhouses.

Parma was growing quickly in the prosperous 1920’s. By the next year, the church itself was being used as a classroom. The Ursuline Sisters were in charge from the beginning. The Sisters came each day from their Motherhouse, then at East 55th and Scovill Avenue. The pastor or the maintenance man would drive over early in the day to pick up the Sisters and then drive them back at the end of the school day. Sister Charlotte came here in 1924 as a young novice; years later, she still remembered waiting for her ride while watching a cow graze on the south side of Charles Avenue! A serious car accident, involv-ing the Sisters on their way to St Charles, was the motivation for then-Bishop Joseph Schrembs to allow the Sisters to live in “local convents” close to the schools where they taught. Over the years, several different houses on Wilber Avenue were rented for the Sisters’ use. By 1940, a frame house on Ridge Road (where the Marian Garden is today) was purchased as a convent. As the number of nuns increased, additional rooms were added to the back of the house; the Sisters referred to their St Charles home as “The Ark.”

When the original parish property was purchased in 1923, the parish had to guarantee that permanent masonry buildings would be built by 1950. As the school population neared 250 students, eight classrooms, with indoor plumbing and central heating, were built and in use by 1927. The building was of brick but the interior partitions were of canvas. For parish social events, the desks were moved aside, the canvas curtains were raised, and the first floor doubled as a parish hall. Those eight classrooms are the north part of today’s Old Building (Junior High).

The Great Depression stifled parish growth; the pastor later wrote “some days we barely made it.”

After World War Two, Parma became a beehive of building and activity. In 1949, the frame church was moved to the corner of Ridge and Charles. The gym and eight more classrooms were built on the church’s original site. During the early 1950’s the school population increased by hundreds of children each year. Wooden, barrack-like buildings were rented, double session classes were held (one group of students in the morning, another group in the afternoon.) Even the founding of new Parma Catholic schools (St Bridget, St Anthony, and St Columbkille) did little to lessen the pressure. In 1958, the New School, with twenty-seven additional classrooms, provided welcome relief.Enrollment peaked in 1964 at 2,800 students.

A new convent was built in 1964 to house the twenty-four Sisters then teaching here; that is today’s Parish Activity Center. In the last ninety-five years, we have graduated more than 14,000 students. We will begin the school year with the Mass of the Holy Spirit, as we have done each year since 1924. We still strive to live out, as best we can, Jesus’s final words to us: “go out and teach!”

CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORDIt is almost time!! I’m sure many of our young children are as

anxious for CLW to return, just as our teachers are. Children’s Liturgy returns on Sunday, September 8th at the 10:00am Mass. This program is for pre-school age children as well as those that have not received Holy Communion yet, essentially grades PreK-2.

GUIDE BOOK & DIRECTORY

ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITY We will begin updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions and events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or

manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please call the Parish Office (440)884-3030.

Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It “will pay” to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY! The Brookside Hunger Center is seeking volunteers at its new Brookside Family Center located at 3764 Pearl Rd. (near West 25th). Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Brookside Family Center provides emergency food and clothing assistance to members of the community. CONTINUING EDUCATION REGARDING MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

Attempting to pick up the pieces of one’s life after the tragedy of divorce is an area that can impact a person’s relationship with God and the Church. One of the significant issues that a person faces is their place in the Church. Does the Church still care about me even though I am divorced? Am I allowed to go to Mass? Can I receive communion? How can the Church help me heal? If I decide to marry again, what do I have to do?

The Tribunal of the Diocese of Cleveland offers its First Step Program to help individuals deal with these questions in order to renew and/or strengthen their relationship with God and the Church. This program is offered to help everyone, especially those who have experienced divorce, learn more about Catholic teaching regarding marriage, divorce, and remarriage. Representatives from the Ministry to the Divorced Office of the Department for Marriage and Family Ministry will also be present to explain the resources they offer to the divorced.

Everyone is welcome to:

Deepen knowledge of the Church’s teaching on marriage…

Learn about the Church’s ministry to the divorced/separated in the Diocese…

Hear about the annulment process and how to submit a case…

Discover a path to healing after divorce in order to strengthen and/or renew a relationship with God and the Church

In any endeavor, taking the “first step” is always the most difficult. The First Step Program helps individuals to navigate the path of healing and closure.

The First Step Program will be held on:

Tuesday, 17 September 2019, at St. Ambrose Parish, Brunswick, at 7:00 pm

Note that the Diocese of Cleveland no longer requires any fees for this process.

THANK YOU FROM THE FEST!

Thanks to all who enjoyed The FEST last Sunday, August 4. The crowds were great. The energy that filled the campus of the Center for Pastoral Leadership was uplifting. The prayer and evening Mass was truly inspiring. Many thanks to all who supported The FEST raffle and made donations to make our 19th annual Catholic Family FESTival a great day of faith, family and fun…all for FREE…for thousands across our diocese and region. Take a few minutes to look at the pictures and videos at www.theFEST.us/media. The FEST truly was a celebration for all generations. Bishop Perez called and challenged the FEST faithful to rise up….respond to God’s call…and build a better world for all. We are the chosen generation. Save the date for FEST 2020 – Sunday, August 9.
