OPENING FACE-OFF Three of a Kind, Working on a Full House: The top three teams - and four of 10 overall - in this week's national opinion polls are women's Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) teams, with another two receiving votes. Top-ranked Wisconsin, No. 2 Minnesota and No. 3 Minnesota Duluth hold the top three spots in both the USCHO.com and USA Today / USA Hockey Magazine polls. No. 10 Bemidji State gives the WCHA a fourth team, while North Dakota and Ohio State are receiving votes in both ledgers. Clutch Potomak: Minnesota has played eight games this year and has won seven of them - and sophomore forward Sarah Potomak has the game-winning goal in five of those contests. Perhaps most impressively, the Gophers have been tied in the third period or overtime in each of their last four outings - and in each instance, Potomak has scored the tie-breaking, game-winner. The 2016 WCHA and National Rookie of the Year scored at the 13:20 mark of the third period to defeat Minnesota Duluth, 4-3 on Oct. 14, and then tallied the winner against the Bulldogs with 1:03 left in overtime Oct. 15. Last weekend, she scored with 4:36 and 13:18, respectively, remaining in regulation to lead Minnesota to a sweep at Ohio State. Potomak leads the NCAA with her five game-winning goals overall. Sensational Sarah: Wisconsin senior forward Sarah Nurse on Sunday became the fifth Badgers player (seventh occurrence), and the 36th in WCHA history (53rd occurrence), to score at least four goals in one game. Her effort at North Dakota places Nurse in elite company, joining fellow UW greats Megan Hunter (Jan. 26, 2002 vs. Boston College), Cyndy Kenyon (March 11, 2006 vs. St. Cloud State), Hillary Knight (five goals on Sept. 27, 2008 vs. Quinnipiac), and Brooke Ammerman (Oct. 4, 2008 vs. Syracuse, Nov. 13, 2009 vs. Wayne State and Feb. 24, 2012 vs. Minnesota State). The Puck Stops Here: Once again, the WCHA boasts a bevy of fantastic goaltenders, with six ranking among the top-25 nationally for goals-against average and five placing among the top-20 for save percentage. UW senior Ann-Renée Desbiens (second at 0.99), SCSU freshman Janine Alder (sixth at 1.07), UND senior Lexie Shaw (11th at 1.40), UMN junior Sidney Peters (14th at 1.52), BSU senior Brittni Mowat (16th at 1.85), OSU sophomore Kassidy Sauve (18th at 1.88) and UMD sophomore Maddie Rooney (23rd at 2.07) are among the GAA leaders. Alder (third at .964), Sauve (sixth at .953), Shaw (11th at .944), Desbiens (12th at .938), Mowat (13th at .937) and Rooney (17th at .929) are in the save percentage rankings. Among all NCAA goaltenders with at least five appearances, Shaw is one of only two to rank in the top-10 for shots faced (178), saves (168), save percentage and GAA. Alder leads all freshmen in GAA, save percentage, wins (tied with 3) and shutouts (tied with 1). Sauve leads the NCAA in shots faced (320) and saves (305). 300 for Brad Frost: With the Gophers' 2-1, sweep-clinching win Saturday at Ohio State, Minnesota head coach Brad Frost became the 11th coach in NCAA D-1 women's hockey history to reach the 300-victory plateau. Frost joins Wisconsin's Mark Johnson (402) and former Minnesota Duluth head coach Shannon Miller (383) as the only three to reach the milestone entirely in the WCHA (Laura Halldorson compiled 278 of her 337 victories with Minnesota). Now in his 10th season with the Gophers, the four-time WCHA Coach of the Year is 300-46-22 (.845) in his illustrious career. BY THE NUMBERS 41: Career shutouts for Badgers senior goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens, an all-time Wisconsin record and just two shy of the NCAA mark held by Minnesota's Noora Räty. 96.0: NCAA-leading penalty-kill percentage for Bemidji State (24-of-25). The Beavers have killed 21 straight power plays and have not allowed a power-play goal since the first period of the season's first game (Sept. 30 at Syracuse). THE WEEK AHEAD No. 1 Wisconsin at Minnesota State: The top-ranked Badgers will look to remain the WCHA's lone undefeated team when the visit the Mavericks in a coaching matchup of "Miracle on Ice" teammates Mark Johnson (UW) and John Harrington (MSU). The Badgers lead the all-me series with the Mavericks, 72-2-3 and have won seven-straight. St. Cloud State at No. 2 Minnesota: Riding a three-game undefeated streak (2-0-1), the Huskies travel to Ridder Arena to face the No. 2 Gophers. Minnesota is 72-3-2 all-me against SCSU, including a current 30-game winning streak dang back to February 2010. No. 3 Minnesota Duluth at Ohio State: The No. 3 Bulldogs venture outside Minnesota for the first time this season, traveling to Ohio State. The Buckeyes will play their seventh and eighth-straight games against ranked opponents (at UW, at BSU, vs. UMN and vs. UMD). UMD went 3-1-0 in the series last year and holds a 63-15-3 all-time edge. No. 10 Bemidji State at/vs. North Dakota: Regional rivals meet for a home-and-home series, with the Fighting Hawks hosting the No. 10 Beavers on Friday. UND leads the all-time series, 38-22-5; but, BSU held a 2-1-1 edge last season. • Second-ranked Minnesota received four goals from Sarah Potomak - including a pair of third-period game-winners - to outlast a 90-save effort from Ohio State goaltender Kassidy Sauve and earn the weekend road sweep.

• In a tightly-contested series between ranked opponents, No. 4 Minnesota Duluth came out with a five-point weekend against No. 10/9 Bemidji State.

• Two intra-state rivals engaged in a hard-fought series in Mankato, with St. Cloud State emerging with five points against Minnesota State.

• Full recaps and box scores are available at wcha.com.

No. 1 Wisconsin 2, at No. 9/10 North Dakota 0No. 1 Wisconsin 5, at No. 9/10 North Dakota 2(Oct. 22 and 23 at Ralph Engelstad Arena; Grand Forks, N.D.) In a series marked by sparkling individual performances, No. 1 Wisconsin rode the 41st career shutout from Ann-Renée Desbiens and a four-goal effort by Sarah Nurse to its first sweep at No. 9/10 North Dakota since the 2010-11 season. Emily Clark put the Badgers up 1-0 with 13 minutes left in the third period in the opener, before senior Sarah Nurse sealed the victory with a late empty-net goal. Desbiens turned aside all 16 shots she faced for the shutout. UND senior goaltender Lexie Shaw was outstanding in her own right, saving 38-of-39 shots. Nurse became the first Wisconsin player to score four goals in a game since Brooke Ammerman against Minnesota State on Feb. 24, 2012, helping the Badgers to a 5-2 win in Sunday's finale. Freshman Presley Norby tallied four assists, including on Lauren Williams' second-period game-winner. Jordan Hampton and Rebekah Kohlstad each scored for the Fighting Hawks.

No. 2 Minnesota 3, at Ohio State 2No. 2 Minnesota 2, at Ohio State 1(Oct. 21 and 22 at OSU Ice Rink; Columbus, Ohio) Second-ranked Minnesota received four goals from Sarah Potomak - including a pair of third-period game-winners - to outlast a 90-save effort from Ohio State goaltender Kassidy Sauve and earn the weekend road sweep. Potomak scored her first career hat trick, including the game-winning goal (to snap a 2-2 tie) with 4:36 remaining in regulation, as the Gophers won Friday's opener, 3-2. Sauve made 35 saves, while Jacyn Reeves and Maddy Field both scored for the Buckeyes. Sauve was sensational Saturday, making a career-high 55 saves to keep OSU tied into the third period, despite the Buckeyes being out-shot by a 57-19 margin. After the Buckeyes' Dani Sadek and the Gophers' Taylor Williamson traded second-period goals, Potomak notched another game-winner at the 6:42 mark of the third. The victory was the 300th for Minnesota head coach Brad Frost, as he became the 11th D-I women's head coach to reach the illustrious milestone (third to win all 300 games in the WCHA).

at No. 4 Minnesota Duluth 2, No. 10/9 Bemidji State 1at No. 4 Minnesota Duluth 3, No. 10/9 Bemidji State 3-OT (UMD wins shootout, 1-0)(Oct. 21 and 22 at AMSOIL Arena; Duluth, Minn.) In a tightly-contested series between ranked opponents, No. 4 Minnesota Duluth came out with a five-point weekend against No. 10/9 Bemidji State. Katerina Mrázová was the difference for the host Bulldogs in the opener, scoring both goals to give UMD the 2-1 win. She opened the scoring at the 1:13 mark of the second period and then, after BSU's Madison Hutchinson tied the contest, Mrázová netted the game-winner 4:08 into the third period. Bulldogs' goaltender Maddie Rooney made 20 saves, while the Beavers' Brittni Mowat stopped 39. UMD appeared poised for the sweep Saturday, taking a 3-1 lead on the strength of goals by Katherine McGovern, Mrázová and Brooklyn Schugel. However, Bemidji State's Emma Terres scored twice - once on a power-play goal in the second period and then at 7:13 of the third - to force overtime. After neither team could score in the extra stanza, UMD's Lara Stalder scored the lone shootout goal for the extra league point. Mowat made 38 more saves - including 13 in the third period and overtime - to give BSU a chance.

St. Cloud State 2, at Minnesota State 2 - OT (SCSU wins shootout, 2-1)St. Cloud State 2, at Minnesota State 0(Oct. 21 and 22 at Verizon Wireless Center; Mankato, Minn.) Two intra-state rivals engaged in a hard-fought series in Mankato, with St. Cloud State emerging with five points against Minnesota State. The two teams traded goals Friday, with Emily Antony's score for Minnesota State with 1:52 remaining in regulation forcing overtime (SCSU's Kayla Friesen and Payge Pena tallied goals, while Mavericks' freshman Demi Gardner netted her first collegiate goal). After a scoreless overtime period, the shootout for the extra league point lasted until the eighth round, when the Huskies' Kelsey Saelens finally ended it for SCSU. After a 26-save performance in the series opener, SCSU freshman Janine Alder was even better in the finale, stopping all 30 shots she faced for her first career shutout in a 2-0 victory. Alder made 10 saves in the first period, 14 in the second and six in the third, while the Huskies received first-period goals by Alyssa Erickson (4-on-4) and Julia Tylke (power-play).

OFFensive player OF The Week

Nurse enjoyed a career weekend for the top-ranked Badgers, scoring an NCAA-high five goals to help UW earn its first sweep at then-No. 9/10 North Dakota since the 2010-11 season. The senior from Hamilton, Ontario became only the fourth player in school histo-ry – and 36th in WCHA annals (53rd occurrence) – to score four goals in a game with her effort in Sunday’s series finale. Nurse netted two goals in the first and two more in the third period during a 5-2 Badgers’ vic-tory. Her first goal of the weekend was an empty-net-ter Saturday, sealing a 2-0 UW triumph. She finished the weekend with a WCHA-best 15 shots on goal and a +5 rating that tied for tops nationally. This is Nurse’s second career WCHA weekly award.

Honorable Mention: • Emily Antony, So., F, Minnesota State - Record-

ed one goal and one assist in the Mavericks’ 2-2 tie Friday against St. Cloud State.

• Rebekah Kolstad, So., F, North Dakota - Scored a goal Sunday against No. 1 Wisconsin and fin-ished the weekend with a stellar .634 face-off percentage.

• Katerina Mrázová, Sr., F, Minnesota Duluth - Scored three of the Bulldogs’ five goals during No. 3 UMD’s three-point weekend, including both in a 2-1 victory Friday over No. 10 Bemidji State.

Sauve continued her terrific start to the season, lead-ing all NCAA goaltenders with 90 saves (on 95 shots) as Ohio State nearly upended No. 2 Minnesota before dropping a pair of one-goal decisions to the back-to-back defending national champions. The redshirt sophomore from Whitby, Ontario made 35 stops on 38 shots in Friday’s series opener, keeping OSU tied until the 15:24 mark of the third period in a contest that saw the Gophers hold a 38-18 advantage in shots. Sauve was remarkable on Saturday during a ca-reer-high 55-save effort, again keeping the Buckeyes tied into the third period despite being outshot by a 3-to-1 margin for the game (57-to-19). Four of the five goals she allowed were off the stick of 2016 National Rookie of the Year Sarah Potomak, while she finished the series with a .947 save percentage – good for sec-ond in the WCHA last weekend. This is Sauve’s second WCHA weekly award of the 2016-17 season and her fourth career honor (including a pair of Rookie of the Week accolades).

Honorable Mention: • Madison Hutchinson, Sr., D, Bemidji State -

Was second among WCHA blue-liners with two points last weekend, scoring a goal and tallying an assist at No. 3 Minnesota Duluth.

• Anna Kilponen, So., D, North Dakota - Blocked 12 shots over the weekend and helped the Fight-ing Hawks’ penalty kill finish a perfect 12-for-12 against No. 1 Wisconsin.

Defending league regular season and back-to-back playoff champion Wisconsin is the preseason pick of conference coaches to finish atop the women’s Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) standings in 2016-17. The Badgers edged out defending national champion Minnesota in the poll of the eight WCHA head coaches.

Wisconsin ended Minnesota’s three-year reign atop the WCHA standings last season with the fifth regular season crown in program history, and league coaches believe Mark Johnson’s team will repeat in 2016-17. The Badgers, who advanced to the Frozen Four last year and won 35 games – the fourth-most in school annals – collected six first-place votes and 48 points overall.

Minnesota is coming off a campaign which saw the Golden Gophers win their fourth national championship in five seasons, the seventh in school history and the 16th in 17 seasons for the WCHA. The Gophers placed second in the coaches’ poll with 44 points and two first-place votes.

A pair of 2016 Final Face-Off participants, North Dakota (36 points) and Minnesota Duluth (30) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Bemidji State, which set a program record with 22 wins last year, was selected to finish in fifth place with 27 points. St. Cloud State (16 points), coming off its best campaign since 2009-10, was tabbed for sixth. Ohio State and Minnesota State rounded out the poll.

Wisconsin senior goaltender Ann-Renée Desbiens, who broke NCAA single-season records in 2015-16 for shutouts (21), save percentage (.960) and goals-against average (0.76), was the coaches’ preseason choice for WCHA Player of the Year. Her Badgers teammate, junior forward Annie Pankowski, along with senior forwards Dani Cameranesi (Minnesota) and Minnesota Duluth (Ashleigh Brykaliuk), also received votes.

Three players received two votes apiece and tied as the choice for preseason WCHA Rookie of the Year: Minnesota forward Lindsay Agnew, along with Wisconsin forwards Presley Norby and Abby Roque. Ohio State defenseman Jincy Dunne and North Dakota forward Ryleigh Houston each received a vote.

• The Beavers (4-3-1, 2-3-1 WCHA) began the series in Duluth, Minn., by falling in a close 2-1 battle Friday night. Senior Brittni Mowat stopped 39-of-41 shots by the Bulldogs but couldn’t match a goal in the third period by the Bulldogs to fall, 2-1. Senior Madison Hutchinson scored the lone goal for the Beavers in the second period and sophomore Sylvia Marolt recorded her first career assist on the Hutchinson marker.

However, the Bulldogs would respond and seven minutes later Brooklyn Schugel put UMD up two for the second time of the day. • North Dakota plays in a home-and-home series this weekend, Oct. 28-29, with Highway-2 neighbor Bemidji State. Friday’s contest will be played at Ralph Engelstad Arena beginning at 7:07 p.m. (CT), and Saturday’s contest will be played at the Sanford Center at 3:07 p.m. (CT).

• The Fighting Hawks lead the all-time series against BSU, holding a 36-22-5 advantage against the Beavers. Additionally, UND has gone 5-4-1 against Bemidji State in the past 10 meetings. Seniors Gracen Hirschy and Amy Menke have both tallied 10 career points against BSU, with Menke scoring seven goals and Hirschy scoring three. Both teams enter the weekend with similar team stats, as both have a +0.50 per-game scoring margin this season. BSU’s penalty kill ranks first in the WCHA (.960), while UND’s ranks second (.947). On the power play, UND ranks third in the WCHA (.143) and BSU ranks fourth (.139).

• A week after earning its first sweep of the season, UND suffered its first sweep of the year, dropping a 2-0 and a 5-2 decision to No. 1 Wisconsin over the past weekend. It also marked the first time that Wisconsin was able to score at Ralph Engelstad Arena in almost two years. In Friday’s contest, Lexie Shaw stopped a season-high 38 shots in the contest, conceding just one goal to the Badgers, which came in the third period. Wisconsin the added an empty-net goal in the final seconds to secure the 2-0 win.

• On Saturday, North Dakota broke Wisconsin’s shutout streak, scoring two goals, one in the second period and one in the third. Unfortunately, neither goal was enough to erase the Badgers’ lead, and Wisconsin once again scored an empty netter, this time for a 5-2 win. The Fighting Hawks first goal of the night came off the stick of Jordan Hampton, who joined in on a three-on-two rush. The second goal was scored by sophomore Rebekah Kolstad after Wisconsin netminder Ann-Renee Desbiens misplayed the puck along the boards. Despite the losses, North Dakota’s penalty-kill unit was stellar, as UND’s PK went a perfect 12-for-12 on the weekend. UND also blocked a season-high 28 shots on Saturday and 21 shots on Friday.

• The Fighting Hawks are ranked fifth nationally among senior scoring. UND’s senior class has totaled 23 points so far this season, which is bested only by Minnesota Duluth (49), Boston University (30), Wisconsin (28) and Penn State (27).

• North Dakota’s freshman class currently leads the WCHA in scoring, ranking sixth nationally, with a total of six goals and eight assists so far this season. Seven of the eight freshman skaters have already recorded a point, and the class is led by Emma Nuutinen who has three goals and one assist.

• Nuutinen ranks tied for 19th in the nation, and fourth in WCHA, among freshman scoring with four points (3g, 1a).

• Five of UND’s seven defensemen have scored goals this season, with Hirschy and Hampton having both scored two goals each. Additionally, the UND defensemen have totaled nine assists, and have generated one third of UND’s scoring this season.

• Shaw enters the weekend with the WCHA’s third best goals-against average (1.40) and save percentage (.944).

• Menke has cracked the top-10 scoring list at UND, and sits in eighth place with 84 career points. She is 12 points shy of becoming the seventh 100-point scorer in program history.

• North Dakota has only lost twice in its last 15 games (4-2-9) that have gone into overtime. The last overtime game that UND lost was on Oct. 17, 2014 to No. 8 Bemidji State.

• Kassidy Sauve earned WCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after saving 90 shots against Minnesota this past weekend. She has faced 320 shots in net so far this season, more than anyone else in the country.

• Her 90 saves against the Golden Gophers are the most by any goalie during a weekend series this season. She also holds the second-highest total with 81 against Wisconsin.

• Lauren Spring has been excellent the last couple weeks. The junior has a point in four straight games, a streak that started with the 3-1 win over then-No. 8 Bemidji State.

• This weekend Ohio State welcomes No. 3 Minnesota Duluth to Columbus, meaning in the last four weekends OSU will have faced No. 1, 2, 3, and 8.

• The Dunne sisters- Jincy and Jessica- currently lead the Buckeyes with 17 and 15 blocked shots, respectively. They’re both in the top-6 in the WCHA in that category.

• Those two also lead the Buckeyes in another category: Jessica has been on the ice for seven of Ohio State’s goals, while Jincy has been on the ice for six. Jessica’s +/- is a team-best +5 and Jincy’s currently sits at +3.

• After taking five of six points from Minnesota State in its first road series of the season, St. Cloud State will travel to Minneapolis this week to face No. 2 Minnesota. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. on Thursday, October 27 and Friday, October 28.

• The Gophers lead the all-time series against the Huskies, 71-3-2. SCSU went 0-4-0 against Minnesota last season.

• SCSU will try to snap a 30-game losing streak against the Gophers this weekend. St. Cloud State's last win in the series came on Feb. 13, 2010 -- a 6-3 win at the National Hockey Center.

• In their last outings, the Huskies took five of six points from Minnesota State in Mankato. The first game ended in a 2-2 tie before senior forward Kelsey Saelens scored in the eighth round of the shootout to give SCSU the extra point in the WCHA standings.

• In the series finale, junior forward Alyssa Erickson and sophomore forward Julia Tylke scored 71 seconds apart in the first period, which proved to be all the offense St. Cloud State needed. Freshman goaltender Janine Alder took it from there, turning away 30 shots for her first career shutout and the 2-0 win.

• Alder has been rock solid between the pipes in her first five games. The Zurich, Switzerland native boasts a 1.07 goals-against average and .964 save percentage, marks that rank sixth and third, nationally, and second and first in the WCHA. She has been the goalie of record for each of the Huskies' three wins this season.

• Tylke continued her torrid start to the 2016-17 campaign, notching two points (1+1) against Minnesota State. The Delafield, Wis., native now has six goals and eight points in eight games, which leads the team. Her six goals are tied for third in the WCHA and tied for sixth in the country.

• Erickson and Tylke have found remarkable chemistry since being placed on the same line earlier this season. They had the primary assist on each other's goals on Saturday at Minnesota State and have combined for eight goals and 12 points this season. They second and first, respectively, on the team in both points and goals.

• It was a series of firsts for the Huskies against the Mavericks. Not only did Alder record her first career shutout on Saturday, but freshman forward Kayla Friesen tallied her first career goal in the series opener on Friday.

BadgersuniversiTy OF WiscOnsin

• Following a pair of road sweeps against top-10 teams, the No. 1 Badgers wrap up their six-game road swing with a series at Minnesota State. Faceoff on both Friday and Saturday is set for 2 p.m.

• This weekend’s series marks the 78th and 79th time the Badgers and Mavericks will have met in program history. The Badgers lead the all-time series with the Mavericks, 72-2-3. UW also holds a seven-game winning streak against the Mavericks heading into this weekend’s series.

• The series features a pair of legends from the “Miracle on Ice” team in UW head coach Mark Johnson and Minnesota State's John Harrington. The two bench bosses helped the U.S. men’s hockey team win gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics, which included an improbable victory over the Soviet Union.

• UW is coming off an impressive sweep against then-No. 9 North Dakota on the road. Emily Clark recorded the game-winning strike for the Badgers in a 2-0 victory over the Fighting Hawks in the series opener. Ann-Renée Desbiens earned her 41st shutout in the victory. In the series finale, Sarah Nurse recorded four goals while Presley Norby chipped in four assists to lead UW to a 5-2 win on Sunday. It marked UW’s first sweep of UND in Grand Forks since the 2010-11 season.

• Thanks to the Badgers’ 4-1 win on Oct. 15 against then-No. 7 Clarkson, head coach Mark Johnson became the first coach in league history to earn 400 career victories. Johnson holds a 402-75-36 record for UW and is only the third coach in NCAA Division 1 women’s hockey history to hit the 400-win milestone.

• Desbiens enters the weekend with 41 career shutouts, including six against the Mavericks. Desbiens ranks second in NCAA history in career blank slates and needs only two more shutouts to match the NCAA record. Desbiens also ranks third in program history in career victories with 77, as she passed Jackie MacMillan on the school’s all-time list last Saturday.

• Nurse is coming off of a career weekend at North Dakota, as the senior lit up Grand Forks with five goals, including a four-goal effort in the Badgers’ 5-2 win over the Fighting Hawks on Saturday. Nurse became only the fifth Badger to record five goals in a single game, joining Meghan Hunter, Cindy Kenyon, Hillary Knight and Brooke Ammerman in the exclusive club. Nurse is tied for the NCAA lead in goals scored with eight, while her 11 points rank ninth in the country.

• A trio of Badgers are closing in on the century mark for career points, as Nurse has 95 points, Sydney McKibbon has 87 points and Clark has 78. The UW trio looks to join Annie Pankowski in the 100-point club, as Pankowski has 105 career points, which is tied for the 19th-most in school history.

• In eight career games against MSU, Clark has seven goals, six assists and 13 points. The junior also sports a +13 plus/minus rating against the Mavericks.

• The Badgers have one of the most balanced offenses in the NCAA this year, as 10 different Badgers have combined to score 28 goals this year.

• UW sports the nation’s top defense, holding opponents to an average of 1.00 goals per contest. Last year the Badgers broke the NCAA record for scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 0.72 goals per game.

• UW is averaging 39.12 shots on goal per game, which paces NCAA teams that have played more than two games.

• The Badgers are holding opponents to an average of 16.12 shots on goal per contest, which paces the NCAA.
