CHAIRMAN’S WELCOME

Following more fl oods and snow than we have suffered for years it has been hard during the winter to envisage balmy sunny days at the Playing Fields; but the season is now upon us!David Livermore and Andy Baker will lead their 1st XI and 2nd XI charges into battle once more in 2013, in pursuit of promotion from Divisions 3 and 10 of the Northamptonshire Cricket League, whilst Heyford’s youth teams will be competing in the U11 and U13 Northampton and District Youth Cricket Leagues.Heyford’s young cricketers earned representative honours at both District and County level last year and, notably, a number made their debut in adult competitive cricket for the Club. This ‘conveyor belt of talent’ will keep many of their senior colleagues on their toes! The rain-delayed, but much anticipated, installation of our artifi cial wicket will support the progression of yet more youngsters, and additional ground improvements are planned with refurbished net facilities and a mini-pavilion in scope. These developments have been, and will only be, possible with the continued support of our advertisers, patrons, volunteers and parents, and I would encourage anyone wishing to aid the Club’s development to contact a Committee member.2013 heralds a busy calendar of cricket, social events and competitions, including another Annual Dinner and Presentation Evening in the Village Hall, ‘Fantasy Cricket’, and an end of season cricket tour.I look forward to seeing you at a sun-drenched Playing Fields during the summer!Simon Legge

2012 followed a familiar path to other HCC seasons in many ways – we managed success against the best teams and let ourselves down against the weaker teams – consistency was a challenge throughout the season, from the weather, to selection to performances. With injuries affecting player availability and restricting the extent to which players could perform, we needed to draft in different players to make their mark on the 1st XI season. Our opening attack saw some changes, with Pecky and Beano shouldering much of the responsibilities, restricting the runs and creating breakthroughs. In Bucka and Kyle, we were starting to see how future attacks might look and not without particular successes in this season. We also saw Linnell scoring a dynamic century at Podington, Rory striking the ball as cleanly as anyone at Old, and new boys Oscar and Jordan stepping up towards the end of the season. The older players still managed to produce more than their fair share of magic, with Jimba and Bakesy scoring close to 1000 runs at the top of the order, Boycie slotting into any batting spot across the top 8 and succeeding, and with Rossco, Pecky and Beano mopping up the lion’s share of the wickets it was easy to see how we were able to compete from game to game.Finishing in the mid-table positions isn’t something we are used to or aspire to, and therefore it was disappointing to end our season in the way that we did

(4 losses in the last 5 games). However, with the challenges we faced, to compete for promotion for as long as we did is testament to the commitment and quality of the players within, what became a very large squad! We have something to build upon and new, youthful energy to bring in – 2013 watch out, 4 years without promotion is not in our DNA!

Best catcher, and best catch: A tricky category given the lack of catches we take. Seen a couple of dollies put down but any catch that Sharpy takes would make the list given he always gets put closest to the bat. Coops tops the catches table though, and can be equally brilliant and frustrating behind the stumps within a 10 minute period, so he would get the nod after helping me out a few times with tough catches.

The Joker: All these chirpy youngsters coming up into the side these days (said the veteran...). Plenty of banter fl owing on the sidelines during games, always a laugh regardless of result, which is fortunate really given the points tally accumulated in 2012. If I had to pick a name I’d have to say Rory, good value despite elevated blood-alcohol percentage from the night before.

Funniest memory for HCC: Ian Hannaford getting hit in the nuts hands down. The only thing that comes close is when another team (who shall remain nameless) celebrated promotion on the pitch two weeks early only to fi nish fourth.

Most memorable moment for HCC: It has to be that hat trick I took a couple of years ago, more of a team effort given there were two catches but a hat-trick’s a hat-trick. Also the fi rst 6 I hit which I probably celebrated more than the hat-trick.

Most likely to cause a run out: Choices, choices, choices...I think if Sharpy, Andy Baker and Rory are batting consecutively in the order, someone is getting run out. Not the fastest trio...

Least likely to do a stint at Square Leg: The captain, classic delegator.

Most Intelligent: When he plays it has to be Craig Browne, cricket and otherwise, the lad’s got brains. Also Hobbs, he looks the smartest...

c cYOUR NAME: Dave BakerMost dangerous bowler: Well if you’re fi elding at second slip then I would be, but in general I would have to say Bucko, after that unbelievable bouncer he bowled at the County Ground. For a bloke that used to wear a headband, he can channel some aggression.

Most dangerous batsman: Adam Linnell, when he plays. Epitomises the phrase ‘go big or go home’. Seen him hit some tonking sixes.

Most memorable HCC innings: For myself, probably taking 4 wickets against the Saints when we beat them at their place, could have had fi ve but for a couple of drops, still waiting on that 5 wicket haul ....

From the squad, seeing Calum’s knock last year, standing tall above all who failed him (not me I gave my wicket away earlier to give him time at the crease), with regrettably the rest of us letting him down before he hit 50. Unfortunately I have never been there to witness 100s from Linnell and Lacey, obviously just a coincidence that...

Biggest moaner: If we bowl fi rst then Lacey no contest. However if we are batting (and Lacey has got runs) then there is a real pretender to the throne in young Mr Wilkins, but he has not quite reached the heights of Stan just yet. Another year fi elding near each other and it could be a different answer next time.

CAPTAIN’S PREVIEW OF 2013

2013 promises to be a signifi cant year for our Club. Another crack at Div. 3, with players I would express as more experienced than battle weary, the possibilities that come from a new pavilion venture and the youth infrastructure starting to push players forward into the fi rst XI, there is much to look forward to.

With a season under our belts with the new points system, we will look to make that work in our favour much more this year. Aiming to start the season as hard as we can after a change in our winter training programme, we will look to get ahead of the division as soon as we can and consolidate our position through the main summer months. We have a fantastic core of players, who are a match for anyone in our division, from Jimba and Bakesy plundering runs between them at the top of the order – and normally in ultra quick time. Leggie, who provides positive assurance throughout the innings and is always a bowlers nightmare with nothing ever given cheaply. To Boycie leading our engine room walking out to the crease like a young, ginger, white (red by June) Viv Richards! With Rossco, Beano and Pecky following up and providing the backbone of our attack – if we can get these boys on the pitch more often than not and surround them with the fresh energy of our emerging young players – we have much to look forward to in 2013!

David Livermore - Club Captain

Prior to the start of the 2012 season optimism was high for a successful season, and following a change at the helm with Andy Baker stepping up from vice-captain to take over from Chris Peck, a young Heyford 2s were eagerly anticipating the season ahead. To summarise as effi ciently as possible, Heyford 2s played with great inconsistency, resulting in a very average 6th position. Breaking down cricket into 3 sections, batting, fi elding and bowling, it is clear to see the batting was shocking, bar a magnifi cent 4 game spell from Adam Linnell, no one reached their potential and produced performances that in the past they have been capable of (captain included), overall, the batsmen will be looking for much better in 2013.

The strength of the 2s has always been the bowling, with players such as C Peck, D Harrison and A Lovell contributing heavily over the past few years. This season however brought a new breed of bowling through, L Buck, D Baker, O Clark and J Smith proved a deadly attack which infl icted damage to many batting line ups. The bowling was greatly assisted by a young and vibrant Heyford 2s fi elding side, the energy and enthusiasm shown throughout the matches was a pleasure to play in, and this attitude will very much look to continue into the 2013 season.

Clubs like ours rely heavily on generating income through fundraising initiatives. Regular schemes, such as the Bonus Ball, Pre-Season Quiz and Fantasy Cricket, and ad-hoc events such as the successful 2011 Race Night help to fi nance progression both on and off the fi eld, improving our facilities year on year with purchases such as sight screens, roll-on pitch covers and more recently the installation of the artifi cial wicket. Fundraising in 2013 will not become any easier. In addition to ongoing costs, the Club is working towards achieving Clubmark status. One key project is the planned installation of a mini pavilion/changing facility, which will not only provide ‘overfl ow’ changing rooms and provide a sheltered area for players and spectators closer to the pitch, but will also support improved welfare provision for the Youth Teams. We can greatly reduce costs if we can use our own resources - like Jonny Cooper who has cleared the site ready for installation, and Adam Linnell who is helping with equipment and materials for the pavilion foundations.Developments like these represent a signifi cant outlay for the Club so it is vital that we continue to pursue fundraising opportunities. Whilst we do look for grant opportunities, it is vital we generate our own funds, and there are ways for everyone to help. For just £1 per week join our Bonus Ball scheme, with the chance of winning £25 every time your number matches the lottery bonus ball; for £5 enter a team in our 2013 Fantasy Cricket; or negotiate a sponsorship opportunity to promote your business. We are planning a large scale fundraiser, hopefully the biggest one that the Club has ever done! The August Bank Holiday has been pencilled in as the provisional date for this so please watch this space and join in. All these fundraisers can only be succesful with your support. If you would like more information on the pavilion project or can contribute in any way to our Fundraising efforts then please contact us on the Club’s e-mail [email protected]

YOUTH CRICKET

HCC Youth Cricket builds on success and takes it to the next level.... another successful season for our youngsters. Heyford CC Youth Cricket has continued to develop and the summer of 2012 was a signifi cant milestone towards future success for the Club. In the newly formatted single Northants competition league, the HCC U11 team achieved a number of impressive wins and narrowly missed top spot in the Northampton and District Youth Cricket League. Likewise, in the fi rst year of competition the HCC U13 team grew in stature and performances from an uneasy fi rst few games to achieving successes over a number of established sides from much bigger clubs, eventually ending the season in a highly commendable fourth place in the league.

TOURFANTASY CRICKET

Still going strong in its fourth consecutive year, HCC Fantasy Cricket was another good fund-raiser for the Club in 2012 but above all was a great talking point, generating interest before, during and after the season!

Seventy-fi ve teams were entered in 2012, team selection once again a fi ne art as player values shifted slightly from the previous season and injuries and availability obviously preyed on managers’ minds. Would the old guard be the best bets again or would value punts on some younger guns pay off?!As it happened, a combination of both approaches would work as Cambray returned to consistency and reclaimed his ‘crown’ from Livers, whose own injury-plagued season disrupted his point scoring. It was Heyford legend Chris Peck’s promotion to leading the 1st XI bowling attack which paid dividends on all fronts, and he ended up pushing Cambray closest. James Baldwin was again in the mix, but Adam Linnell, Laurence Buck and Jordan Smith all came to the fore at different times to earn valuable points and potentially boost their value for this season! Linnell in particular could feel very proud, not only for the two centuries he scored, but also the huge 212 points he earned in week 12, a Fantasy Cricket record! No fewer than twenty different ‘Teams of the Week’ shows that things change dramatically on a weekly basis. Overall it turned out to be a great year for the ladies with three fi nishing in the top fi ve managers of the year, and Ann Hindson and Jade Baker battling for the top spot from June onwards. Despite not actually winning Manager of the Week at all, Ann ended up as overall winner. She was only 20 points ahead of Jade, whose second place fi nish follows her winning effort in 2010 and a top ten fi nish the year before to make her arguably the best overall manager of the last four seasons. Congratulations to Ann, and all who contributed on and off the pitch throughout the season!

For the 2013 season there will be a new co-ordinator taking over – David Baker will now be the man in the hot-seat charged with continuing the success of this popular venture, so watch this space for forthcoming details of how it will all work in 2013!

WEBSITE

Having moved to the new platform in 2011, last year saw new items added to the Club website including HCC Team Mates. 2012 also saw the Club become active on Twitter where we can now be followed @HeyfordCC and this, in addition to continued updates through our Facebook page ensures that players, supporters and friends keep up to date with Club news on a daily basis not just during the season but throughout the year. With the 2013 season almost upon us we have a number of exciting plans in place for improvements to the website. In addition to our regular features, including the highly anticipated Fantasy Cricket updates from new coordinator David Baker, we plan to have a greater presence for Youth Cricket. With ambitious plans to continue Club development we will be looking at ways of raising money over the coming months. With this in mind I would urge you all to consider using the ‘Cash Back’ scheme on our website which links to a number of major retailers; by going to their websites through ours it generates income for the Club at no extra cost to you!As always I am open to new ideas so if you have any suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me.
