IF you’re on a bit of a Sticky Wicket, you are ina difficult or challenging situation! The weather

conditions can play a huge part in the game.Clear blue skies and no wind often mean this isfavourable to the batter.

Conversely, if there has been rain, humidityand low pressure, then this is more favourableto the bowler. Given the recent rain andovercast conditions it is possible the wicket willbe truly Sticky which is consistent with thetheme of this event!

Sticky Wicket is a difficult situation and thefamilies of children with special needs are quiteliterally on a bit of a sticky wicket.

Origin: taken from Phrases.orgA wicket is, of course, the playing surface usedin cricket. This phrase is a direct allusion to thedifficulty of playing on a wet and sticky pitch.

The earliest citations of the expression referspecifically to cricket. For example, Bell's Life inLondon, July 1882 notes: "The ground... wassuffering from the effects of recent rain, andonce more the Australians found themselves ona sticky wicket."

For figurative usage of the phrase, we need lookno further than the cricket playing countries of theBritish Empire and Commonwealth.

The first such citation we found is from an April1930 edition of the Jamaican newspaper TheGleaner. "Your Excellency, Sir William Morrisonand gentlemen. I am afraid tonight, owing to therain we have had in this island of Springs, I ambatting on rather a sticky wicket. We have justheard Sir William Morrison make, in myopinion, a magnificent speech. I do not hope orthink of living up to that."

NetworkingIn case you don’t know how to network, it isreally simple. Go up to someone you don’t know, look into their eyes, say hi, be really engagedand interested in what they have to say, swapbusiness cards and if you have connected withthem professionally or personally, follow up afterthe event. Events such as Sticky Wicket arebrilliant for meeting new people with whom youmay end up doing new business, learningsomething or just enjoying their future company!
