Dearest Quilters,
Steve and I are in Sandy, Oregon, where we
grew up. The weather is perfect with a lovely
breeze. We have been in Wyoming and
Yellowstone. Missing all of you!
I know everyone enjoyed Shawnee Barnes and
her fabulous quilts. Cannot believe she hasn’t been
quilting for decades.
I am looking forward to our silent auction and
mini year sale in September. Ladies, call Betty or
Jerri to reserve your table!
See you soon, if I can ever leave Oregon … Marsh

Monthly Sales Kathy Rhoades
For September we will suspend our regular monthly
sales of books, magazines, or fabrics to let everyone give
their full attention to our 30th Anniversary Birthday
Bash and Silent Auction. Thirty Years!
As a founding member of the guild, it makes me
proud that this once small gathering of dedicated quilters
has been able to succeed and grow into the warm,
vibrant, inclusive group it is today. As we said in our
original statement of purpose, our goal was to promote,
encourage, and share the art of quilting, and I think
we’ve all done that wonderfully well! Few of the
original members are still around to witness their
achievements, but it’s nice to know their dedication and
camaraderie, their legacy, still lives on.
Happy Birthday, Colorado West Quilters’ Guild!
Kathy Rhoades
Quilted Comforts Janet Smith
At the August meeting, we received 9 quilts, 1 top,
and 32 doll quilts. We really appreciate the donations
from all our members, as all benefit the charities we
serve.
This month 5 quilts were delivered to the Western
Slope Center for Children and 4 to the Pregnancy
Center. Our charity organizations are truly grateful for
our donations, as our quilts help provide comfort and
healing for their clients.
WOW ladies, you have responded to our request to
complete the quilting kits so that we can distribute the
finished quilts to our charities. At this point, all but a
few of the quilting kits have been taken to be finished.
THANKS!
Therefore, we now need completed tops to be made
so we can make up more quilting kits. We have
approximately 200 piecing kits, and we would like to
encourage all of you to join in this effort and pick up one
of these kits. If everyone took a top piecing kit to
complete this summer, we would be able to renew our
inventory. All piecing kits have a pattern, and all pieces
are cut. You just have to sew it together.
The quilted comforts committee has divided up the
duties so that each of us has a small portion of the job.
You may contact Judy Moeny, Janet Smith, or Terry
Tusberg for more information.
We will not have another workday until September,
but you are welcome to contact one of us during the
summer for your quilted comforts needs.

September is our CWQG Birthday month! Yes,
there will be cake. Ice cream too!
Come and help celebrate our guild and all the
members who have contributed to its success for 29
years.
September is also Silent Auction month! Now is the
time to gather up all those things in your sewing/craft
space that you’re not using and donate them to the
auction. Quilts, kits, fabric, books,
patterns, notions, rulers, yarn,
buttons, knitting and crochet
items, scrap booking, craft and art
supplies, totes, baskets, bring it
all! Help make this our most
successful auction. Your
participation helps ensure that we
continue to have the quality programs that we enjoy so
much. Bid cards will be available for you to label your
items. Bids will be in $1.00 increments.
In addition to the auction, the round tables will be
available for members to rent for the evening to sell
items that they don’t want to donate, but that they no
longer want, like a sewing machine. You set your prices,
collect your money and keep the $$ from the treasures
you sell. Items do not need to be quilt related. Table rent
is $10.00. There are only nine round tables. Contact Jerri
if you’re interested. 970-261-0220.
Please take unsold items home at the end of the
evening. Come for a fun time!
In October, we will welcome Marguerita McManus
as our guest speaker and instructor.
Marguerita’s lecture and trunk
show is entitled “Quilt as You Go -
a Progression of Techniques.” In
Thursday’s class, participants will
make a small crazy patch quilt
using the decorative stitches on
their machines. Marguerita will
also demonstrate tips
and tricks for joining
the blocks and
finishing the quilt.
The CWQG slots are
filled, but SSQ has
space available. Please
contact Debbie Wolfe,
307-389-9267 to
register. The cost is
$40.00 and includes
lunch. Another fun class! Don’t miss out!

Minutes of the Board Meeting
August 8, 2019
The meeting was called to order by Marsha Root at
6:02 PM. The minutes in the newsletter were approved
with no additions or corrections.
Treasurer, Katie Miller, reported she has gone to the
Department of Revenue three times to correct payment
of sales taxes for special events in 2016 and 2017.
Reports have to be filed even if we had a zero balance in
our account, and we don’t have a zero balance. Katie
will take care of the Apple Fest accounting; we have a
booth. We are current with our Federal tax (990-N)
form.
Committee Reports:
1st Vice President: Bonnie Huisjen reported that
Color Sunday is September 29, 10am to 3pm, and set up
starts at 8:00. Janet Smith, Verda, and Judy Moeny are
working at the booth and need to be sure to collect our
quilted items, tables, and chairs from Chris. Jerri said
we need to rent a storage unit so that no one has to store
items in their home, and quilters working at venues can
go get items when they are needed. We need to
purchase some lightweight, foldable tables and chairs.
Whoever works venues needs to be able to lift, carry,
and haul these items. Bonnie suggested we ask the guild
to help with pricing and storing items. Gig suggested we
assign tasks, such as picking up tables, chairs, canopy,
and items to sell. Bonnie will talk to Janet, Verda, and
Judy about the Color Sunday tasks. Katie will be out of
town for two weeks in September and will bring cash
and the cashbox to the September guild meeting. We
need an IPad and a square for processing credit card
purchases at venues. Sheila will put the app on her IPad.
2nd
VP Membership report: 79 members, 52 have
paid their dues. We need to reach out to those who have
not paid their dues so that we can print a complete roster.
3rd
VP Programs Jerri DeBoer and Betty Reed: Shawnee Barnes from Rifle will present our program.
She will drive back that evening so we will have the
program before the business meeting. Are Brenda and
Sharon going to be in charge of the Challenge? We
should introduce the challenge in December and reveal
in April.
The Silent Auction will be in September. Bonnie
said The Daily Sentinel will be glad to publish
information about our guild in the paper.
New Business: The board discussed a fair price to
let quilters rent a table for the silent auction in
September. It was decided that the round tables will be
rented out to members for a $10 or $20 fee with the
member then retaining any profits. The long tables will

be reserved for the guild items. Sewing and craft items
should be sold at the silent auction. We will have a sign
up for renting tables at the August meeting.
The board agreed that the dates of SSQ’s
Rendezvous will be put in the newsletter. SSQ is having
a yard sale this Wednesday. In October, Margarita
McManus will present a program and workshop: “Quilt
as You Go.” Bonnie will help SSQ with pincushions for
the CQC meeting. The workshop for CQC will be
“Fractured Florals” and will be held at The Owl’s Nest
on August 25.

Minutes of the General Meeting
August 14, 2019
The meeting called to order by Marsha Root at 7:00
pm
Marsha announced that at the Silent Auction
scheduled for next month, quilters are encouraged to
bring sewing related items to donate to the guild to sell
for this fundraiser. Quilters can also rent round tables
from the guild for the low price of $10.00 apiece, to sell
their own items that they do not want to donate to the
guild. There will not be an additional charge for items
sold by individual quilters who have rented a table.
Unsold items must be taken home. Please bring money
and be prepared to buy items.
Betty and Jerri presented the program at 7:03.
Shawnee Barnes from Parachute presented a lovely trunk
show. Shawnee mentioned that Glide thread is good for
her long arm machine. She mentioned that cotton thread
creates too much lint.
Gini Bright is our member of the month. (Note from
Beverly: Please stop calling Gini an over achiever. She
is generous and produces beautiful work)
Marsha called the business meeting to order at 7:45.
Minutes in the newsletter were approved with no
additions or corrections.
The treasurer’s report in the newsletter was
approved as printed in the newsletter. We want to thank
Katie Miller for jumping through hoops to settle our
taxes. We are now ready for Color Sunday and
Applefest. The report is filed for audit.
Committee Reports:
2nd
VP Membership: Last year we had 79
members, this year, 52 have paid their dues. We may
reach out to those who have not paid their dues so that
we can print a complete roster. We have one new
member tonight, Laura Craig.
3rd
VP of Programs: Betty Reed and Jerri DeBoer
mentioned Bonnie is collecting pin cushions for the
CQC meeting on Saturday, August 24, at the American
Lutheran Church, 631 26 Road. The instructor will be
Sue Hickman who will lecture on “The making of a quilt
artist.” Her workshop, “Fractured Floral,” is on Sunday
the 25th
at the Owl’s Nest. Quilters must be members of
CQC to take the class and can join at the CQC meeting.
Betty mentioned that next month is our 29th birthday
party. Sign-ups were available for the Marguerita
McManus workshop, “Quilt asYou Go with Crazy
Quilts.”
Newsletter: Kathy Lisco and Sheila Symanski need
our articles by the 20th.
Veteran’s Quilts: Gina Gust showed the
membership eleven beautiful donated quilts. We will
display them at Color Sunday and Applefest before they
are donated to veterans.
Quilted Comforts: The guild received thank you
notes from Strive and The Pregnancy Center. They were
read at the meeting. Quilted Comforts will not have a
work day until September 25.
Kathy Rhodes’ Books, Fabrics, and Magazines made
$77 tonight.
Block of the Month: 40 blocks were turned in.
Two tickets were drawn. Winners of 20 blocks apiece
were Pat and Thelma.
Retreats: Bonnie and Gina announced the next
retreat is November 1, 2 and 3 at the Grand Vista Hotel.
The retreat room will be open at 10:00 a.m. Friday and
will go until Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm. The cost for
three days is $90. Members must make their own
arrangements with the Grand Vista for room reservations
and should mention the CWQG for a discount. Each
night the conference room will be open as long as
quilters want to sew with the exception of Sunday night.
Workshop attendees are encouraged to make and bring a

home-made item to donate for door prizes. The makers
may be anonymous. The retreats are always a lot of fun.
Quilters are encouraged to bring unfinished objects
(UFO’s) to work on. There will not be a program at the
retreat.
The Barnes and Noble book fair is scheduled for the
first Saturday in December. Jenni has bookmarks to give
away and enough fuzzy yarn for the bookmarks. Shifts at
the Book Fair will be three hours and Jenni Stansbury
has a sign-up sheet for members who want to volunteer.
Jenni mentioned quilts to be donated to the
Woman’s Recovery Center. There are no specific limits
on the quilts to be donated to the Women’s Recovery
Center. They can have bindings. There is no size limit
but 40 X 40 is a nice size.
Quilt-a-Fair will be in Longmont on September 27
and 28.
PEO Quilts in the Country Quilt Show will be in
Meeker September 6 and 7, which is the same weekend
as the Sheep Dog trials.
The business meeting was adjourned at 8:45 pm.
We had Show and Tell.
