Quiet Storm tops KU in defensive battle for title Brown lifts women's hoops team as MVP Playing good defense usually leads to a great deal of success. It was a superb defensive effort by Quiet Storm that paced the squad to a 41-38 triumph over KU in last month's Rahway Recreation Women's Basketball League championship game at the Rahway Recreation Center. KU led 19-15 at halftime behind an intermission- leading eight points from Brittany Powell. Quiet Storm came back to outscore KU 26-19 in the second half to take the championship. Neither team scored easily, with every shot being con- tested. It was a back-and-forth affair, with no lead bigger than live points. KU could not get off a game-tying 3-point field goal in the final seconds to force overtime. Naimali Clemons from KU paced all scores with 16 points. She was the only player from either team to reach double digits. Candance Lloyd and Ann Barrino led Quiet Storm with eight points each. KUand Quiet Storm were to face each other in the regular season, but the game was cancelled because of extreme heat. KU, which finished 5-3, got to the championship game by beating top-seeded Showtime 56-48 in the semifinals. Showtime entered with a 6-0 record. KU lost to Showtime 52-31 in the regular season. Quiet Storm's road to the championship game was a littie easier. In its semifinal, Quiet Storm downed Heavy Hitters 40-29. Even though Bianca Brown was not able to play in the championship game due to injury, she took home the tournament MVP award. Brown coached her team to victory the night of the championship game. She was an important part of Quiet Storm's 6-1 regular season record. Brown averaged a little under eight points per game, but it wasn't her scoring that made her the MVP. Brown played calm and distributed the ball where needed. She was asked to guard the other team's best player and took pride in her defense. She was the glue that kept her team together. Union's Diamond named college hoops coach Bill Diamond of Union has been named assistant men's basketball coach at Berkeley College in Newark. The former assistant coach/life skills coordinator at St. Benedict's Prep and former assistant coach at Union County College and Union High School brings over 25 years of coaching experience to the Knights' basketball program. Diamond began his coaching career as a student-assistant coach in 1980 at American University in Washington, D.C.. under former University of Maryland head coach Gary Williams. While attending attending Antioch Law School, he was a NBA College Scout for Marty Blake & Associates where he was responsible for scouting and evaluating college players in the Washington, D.C., metro area. While an assistant coach under Ted Zawacki at Union, he was a part of the staff that caputured Union's first Group 4 state championship in 1997. Diamond has also served as an assistant coach to Brian Crawford from the nationally recognized Newark Rams AAU program from 2000-2007. Upon graduating from law school, Diamond was hired as Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations for Professional Management Associates, Inc., a Washington, D.C. based sports management firm rep- resenting professional basketball players in the NBA and Europe. He represented over fifty NBA draft picks such as Charles Oakley, Kenny Anderson, Nate McMillan, Rick Carlisle, Nick Anderson, Dennis Rodman, Rod Strickland, Mark Jackson and Chris Mullin. In 1991, Diamond formed his own sports and entertainment management firm, the Diamond-Sumner Group, LLC with Roselle native Bob Sumner, creator and Talent Coordinator for HBO's Rus- sell Simmons Def Comedy Jam. In his spare time for the past two decades, Diamond has mentored high school student-athletes from the Union and Essex county areas. He assists them with their college application and financial aid process and job placement. He has also written columns and articles for the former Watchung Conference high school website addressing multiple issues regarding high school, college and professional basketball. His most recognized column was titled "Where Have All the High School STUDENT-Athletes Gone?" "I'm elated to have Billy as part of the Berkeley staff as we begin our second year as a member of the USCAA conference.'" said Antho- ny Calabrese, Berkeley head coach. "His love and passion of working and developing high school and college basketball players, on and off the court for the past two decades, is unparalleled. Quiet Storm tops KU indefensive battle for titleBrown lifts women's hoops team as MVP

Playing good defense usually leads to a great dealof success.

It was a superb defensive effort by QuietStorm that paced the squad to a 41-38 triumphover KU in last month's Rahway RecreationWomen's Basketball League championship gameat the Rahway Recreation Center.

KU led 19-15 at halftime behind an intermission-leading eight points from Brittany Powell.

Quiet Storm came back to outscore KU 26-19 in thesecond half to take the championship.
