Presidents Corner – July, 2017

Hello once again to all WRAG members. As we emerge from one of our coldest winters of recent years, with record doses of flu being recorded throughout the State, we hope this newsletter finds you all fit, well, and enjoying life. No doubt it wont be long before we will all be complaining about the heat! Most people would be pleased that “The Tigers” finally won their 11th AFL Premiership after a very long drought of 37 years. The second “Fairy-tale” premiership in a row, after

“The Western Bulldogs” last year. Perhaps there is hope for “The Demons” (57) years, “The Saints” (51) years, and “The Blues” (22) years over the next three seasons? We live in hope! We should also acknowledge “The Melbourne Storm” who won The NRL Premiership on 1 October 2017. On a sombre note, since May this year WRAG has lost three of its longest serving members. In May 2017 we farewelled Morrie Wahner, Member (1989), Life Member (2011). In July 2017, Tom Young our oldest (97) and longest serving member (1978) passed away. And in September 2017, Wally Cavill, Member (1988), Life Member May (1996) died. These members will all be sadly missed and long remembered for their individual contributions to WRAG. Our deepest sympathies go to the families. On a brighter note, 18 members attended the Games Night on Tuesday 3 October 2017, joining in various games, table tennis and card games. As Games Nights are now WRAG’s only remaining evening events, the committee will investigate changing the twice annual Games Nights to daytime events in 2018. We look forward to our very popular Cup Eve Picnic on Monday 6 November 2017 (see notice on page 5). Please remember that we will conduct our WRAG Special General Meeting during the lunch break at this event. Please also note that the committee is considering moving the WRAG Annual General Meeting from February to May 2018. Our final event for the WRAG 2017 calendar year is the annual WRAG Christmas Lunch, on 18th December, 2017, at the Riversdale Golf Club with entertainment from the very popular Paul Hogan (The Real Paul Hogan), whom we very much enjoyed at the 2016 WRAG Christmas Party (see invitation and booking details attached to this Newsletter). The annual WRAG Membership Fee is reluctantly increasing to $15 from 1 January 2018. Although, you can all get another year’s membership for $10, if you pay your membership renewal by 31 December 2017. (Membership renewal forms re also attached to this Newsletter) We remain as always willing to have any feedback from members about anything related to WRAG. Best Wishes to All for a Safe and Happy Festive Season and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year. Terry Spicer

Someone with an interesting story........

Rona & Helmut Meuris Rona with just some of the wonderful crafts and

knitting projects she is renowned for.

This year, Rona placed two of her items into the RAS

Melbourne Show. At the time of printing, Rona was

awarded 2nd prize for her doll, and was waiting for

confirmation of prizes for her Tea Cosy, in the

Peoples Choice Awards.

Small enough praise for her many wonderfully crafted

items. Rona donates most of her work to charity,

and is very reluctant to accept any thanks, or praise.

Rona & Helmut have lived in Glen Waverley for 44

years. They joined WRAG, 2005. Helmut was

President of WRAG for 7 years in two stints, 2008 -

2016, and both Rona and Helmut have been big

supporters of WRAG events and its members. And

many have become their personal friends.

Eighteen years after their initial move into Glen

Waverley with their young family, they moved to

Sydney for a year. When they returned to Glen

Waverley they wanted a home at the end of the

street, to avoid passing traffic so sold up and moved

into their present home, in 1996. Their son, Steven

and daughter, Cindy were already grown by this

time, but they have enjoyed sharing with their

granddaughters.

Helmut, worked with Schindler establishing the

business in Australia, predominately Lifts and

Escalators. When Helmut retired in late 1990s, he

managed his own business, Lift Consult until 2012.

Rona trained as a dressmaker, and worked at

Florina Frocks but once the children arrived, she

worked from home as a young mum. Before she

retired she worked in clerical positions at the Eye &

Ear Hospital. For the last 10 years, Rona has busied

herself with home projects and community work.

She often works with others to produce craft and

toys for many charities.

Helmut represented Australia in Austria, Germany,

Holland, South Korea, London, New York & San

Francisco. Rona often travelled with him on these

trips, and they are both full of interesting facts, and

information about their travels.

Special Mention and Thanks to Rosemary Campbell the Convenor of Classical Music, a WRAG activity since the 1980s. Rosemary was hospitalised in September last year and after 4 months in Cabrini, she made it to the nursing home from where she was able to continue the monthly meetings until this July.

Sadly, there are no longer enough people able and willing to continue with the group so it has reluctantly finished up. Rosemary joined when she retired from secondary school teaching and there are now just a handful of people still in contact.
