Director’s Message

Dear Parents, Students & Community Members,

Hope all of you are well and keeping warm in these winter

days.

Some interesting facts I came across while reading U.S.

News and World Report, 2000. My views are that although

U.S. colleges and universities enroll more international stu-

dents than any other country in the world, most of what is

reported in the literature about their experiences empha-

sizes that, the transition challenges they face in adapting to

a new, foreign living and learning environment, are the most

significant factors.

Most international students report some degree of culture

shock when they arrive in the U.S. and begin their studies. The typical manifestations are

stress, anxiety, and feelings of powerlessness, rejection and isolation. This is a result of

being exposed to new values, attitudes and behavioral patterns, not necessarily debilitat-

ing however, indeed, the experience can be transformative which is positive in nature.

Friendship networks seem to be a major factor in how well international students deal with

stress. Those students who establish strong social support networks and systems tend to

fare better than those who do not. As studies are important, equally, establishing good

social patterns represent a critical slice of education. Schools and colleges are there not

only to teach us academics but also to prune us into society and a multicultural race that

we are projecting to.

Good work and good luck to all.

Pottery Factory:

The students enjoyed making clay bowls and will complete their

projects after the bowls are fired.

A big thanks to Ms Danier for helping out with the project.

Mrs Iles’s Class Activities

Math:

The students are working on regrouping with subtraction. We will continue to use

manulatives to understand this concept.

Gunda Ryazapova

Is 7 years old. Her favorite movie is The Lorax. She likes to collect

books and shells. Brown, blue, purple, red and yellow are her fa-

vorite colors.

Mama, papa, Amra, Saya and Lena complete her family. Her favor-

ite sport is basketball. A dream vacation for Gunda would be her

home country of Abkhazia.

Culture:

The students have completed their Ancient China Unit and finalized a terrific giant poster. There

are many facts and stories they can tell you about the poster.

Our giant Ancient China poster was becoming more interesting each day. The students have in-

dependently worked on cultural, historical and geographic areas of this interesting country.

Isaac: “The Chinese dragon gives the people good luck for the New Year.”

Jan: “Birds on the boats catch the fish and put them in a basket.”

Aldo: “The Great Wall of China is 5,500 miles and is 2000 years old.”

David: “The Great Wall is very long.”

Nico: The Great Wall protected the king and when the enemies came they put fires on

torches to make signals of enemies coming.”

Roman: “Chinese New Year is celebrated with dragons and they have legends about

dragons.”

Gunda: “Confucius was a really wise man and smart. He became popular because he was

just a ‘nobody’ and became smart.”

Shahed: “They do holidays with kites, dragon kites.”

Rodaina: “There is a Yellow River in China They say if you go in the Yellow River you will

never get clean again.”

Sophie: “They have a holiday called Chinese New Year and they have lots of dragon parades

(they are not real dragons).”

Lilo: “When some people died, they just threw them in the Great Wall and it protects

China.”

Thanks for getting the lined paper for writing.

The students do prefer this over the thin newsprint.
