ASQ RALEIGH QUALITY IN THE TRIANGLE | May 15 , 2018

    CONCURRENT SESSIONS 2A & 2B | 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

    SESSION 2A 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Critical Review of Process Capability AnalysisWhile the concept of process capability is not new, there are some details that need to be discussed. This paper will focus on some of

those issues.Consider the following questions:• Is there a real difference in the Cpk and Ppk and which one is better?• What is the sample size used to determine Ppk?• How confident are you that your index really represents the true level of performance for your process?• Is there an index that considers the target in addition to the specification limits?

    • Why do we need so many indices — 41 to date?

These considerations will be discussed and also the recommendations for use.

    Speaker

MARK CROSSLEY, President, Quality Management Associates, Inc.

For more information about the speaker, please see page 11.

    SESSION 2B 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Driving Process Improvement using Project Management Tools and PrinciplesIn recent years, pharmaceutical companies have implemented Operational Excellence (OpEx) in their R&D organizations to improve

productivity but have had only limited success. Practitioners and management started to question the effectiveness of process-focused

    improvement methodologies.

The objective of this presentation is to help the audience 1) understand the role and limitation of process improvement methodologies in

pharmaceutical R&D and 2) apply project management to drive process improvement.

Based on lessons learned from numerous process improvement projects in pharmaceutical organizations, the presenter illustrates

a number of challenges OpEx practitioners face, and argues that two of our long-held assumptions in process improvement can

prevent us from seeing the real problems. Keeping in mind three critical concepts when applying OpEx methodologies in R&D can

help practitioners overcome resistance and design better solutions.

The presenter recommends a balanced approach that integrates process management with an organization’s project management

capability, and as a result, better engages the stakeholders and delivers both short-term results and long-term improvement.

Organizations can implement the approach by following a six-step process outlined in the presentation.

    Speaker

FANG ZHOU, Senior Consultant, Valeocon Management Consulting For more information about the speaker, please see page 15.

SESSION 1C 9:45 – 10:45 am Adopting Lean Quality Concepts for Improved Communication & Operational ResultsAdapting Jidoka, PDCA and “right the first time” to the process of communication has proven that these concepts can positively influence

the alignment of teams to drive quality interactions. While the concept of quality is conventionally associated with a standard against

which we validate that a product or service meets customers’ requirements, we can expand its usefulness to improve problems caused by

miscommunication. Collaboration and coordination are crucial for success, and considering the physical distance, cultural and language

differences in our globalized economy, these new risks are exerting pressure on our critical process value chains. The so called “soft”

issues that inflict a real hard impact on our quality, delivery and cost are often left unchecked, even though they weigh heavily on the root

causes of expensive defects. We already possess the skills and tools and need only take responsibility to help reduce misunderstandings.

SAM YANKELEVITCH, CEO, Xpress Lingo Solutions For more information about the speaker, please see page 15.

    CONCURRENT SESSIONS 3A: 1:00 – 3:00 PM | 3B & 3C: 1:00 – 2:00 PM

    SESSION 3A 1:00 – 3:00 PM

Strategic Business Partner Skills — Selling QualityWithout question, the Quality function has the potential to add tremendous value.

Unfortunately, Quality often lacks the compelling story through which to communicate this potential.

In this two-hour session, the facilitators will explore the most common ways of selling quality and the underlying philosophy behind

these approaches to determine where they fall short.

    Speakers

JEFFREY SOPER, Executive Director, ISBPI Inc.

JASON SPIEGLER, Senior Director, Siemens PLC For more information about these speakers, please see pages 13 & 14.

    SESSION 3B 1:00 – 2:00 PM

How to Identify, Influence, and Enable Leaders to Support Quality Systems and LeanSigma Programs.Have you ever wondered why your organization constantly has the same problems occurring over and over again? Or why employees

don’t follow processes? And ultimately you (as a Quality professional) are constantly turned to by leadership to solve the same issues

that results in quality defects, dissatisfied customers, late deliverables, increased cost, and low employee job satisfaction.

There is not a one item fix for all solutions for these issues, however, there is one solution that when done right, does set up the

conditions and expectations for the other elements of an effective and efficient operation to occur to improve these problem areas.

When we have a leader that is on fire and motivated to get things done in the right way and has a spark of interest in the operation that

produces the product or service, then the ability for improvement is much easier and the results are better. So leaders do influence

the Quality System and LeanSigma programs and can either improve the efforts, or cause the quality of the organization to decline

therefore increasing the pace of waste proliferation to occur.

In this session we will explore how to identify which leaders you need to influence and how to recognize those leaders’ motivations and

behaviors. You will learn some approaches that you can use to help your leaders to be better enablers and supporters of the Quality

    System/LeanSigma programs.

    Speaker

DAVID BALL, Senior Manager, Clinical Quality Management, IQVIA™ For more information about the speaker, please see page 11.

    SESSION 3C 1:00 – 2:00 PM

The Hidden Value of ASQ membershipUpon joining, new ASQ members are provided a long list of membership benefits that show the value a person will obtain for their

annual registration fee. However, what is not provided is the extensive list of hidden benefits and value that an astute person acquires

over time. This presentation will help you shorten the learning curve! Nearly two dozen non-advertised but meaningful benefits of being

an ASQ member will be provided and explained throughout this presentation.

    CONCURRENT SESSIONS 4A & 4B | 2:15 – 3:15 PM

    SESSION 4A 2:15 – 3:15 PM

Thriving in a changing world: How successful organizations embrace and thrive with changeChange happens in all organizations, large and small, and in every type of industry. Research shows that most change initiatives fail

to achieve the stated objectives. In almost all cases, the change must happen while the business is running, creating tension in the

organization. Successful organizations have learned how to:

    • determine the most promising improvements,

    • deploy the change where needed, and then

    • measure the effectiveness of the improvement.

Supportive leadership during any change process is critical to achieve the results of the projected outcomes. Effective models of

leadership in change initiatives will be reviewed.

Groups will be challenged to determine the potential impacts of projected improvements. Then, large group discussions will examine

which change initiatives will likely be most effective.

    Speaker

NANCY JOKOVICH, President, Jokovich Consulting For more information about the speaker, please see page 12.

    SESSION 4B 2:15 – 3:15 PM

Leadership to Improve Human PerformanceLeadership creates and reinforces the culture of quality in an organization. A common cultural challenge is human error, which can lead

to poor quality, significant costs, customer service outages, and significant regulatory risk. The keys to improving human performance

lie in changing our approach to leadership and creating a strong quality culture.

This session uses case studies from the personal care industry, where a site reduced human error by over 50% and achieved significant

improvement across all business KPIs. Learn the 5 leadership keys to success for improving human performance and become a

    change agent in your organization.

    WRITING EXCEPTIONAL AUDIT REPORTS

Leader: Mary Chris Easterly For more information about the speaker, please see page 12.

You conducted a thorough audit: observed processes, reviewed

procedures and records, and interviewed personnel. How do you

communicate the results to gain the maximum benefit?

By writing a clear, concise audit report!

    Ineffective audit reports:

    • Inhibit continuous improvement of the evaluated systems

    • Lead to confusion about requirements, and

    • Waste time addressing insignificant issues.

    Exceptional audit reports:

    • Communicate gaps in compliance to the audit sponsor, and

    • Facilitate the auditee’s response to gaps in compliance,

identifying appropriate corrections, corrective actions, and/or

    preventive actions.

Attendees will identify the crucial elements of an exceptional

audit report, review examples of poorly written observations, and

practice writing unambiguous observations (gaps in compliance).

A workbook and electronic templates will be provided.

Note: Most examples provided are from ISO 9001 or

    pharmaceutical/medical device good manufacturing practices

audits, but principles presented apply to reports for any type of

    quality audit.

    IMPROVE COMMUNICATION THROUGH FISHBONE

    DIAGRAMS AND THE 5 WHYS

Leader: Sam Yankelevitch For more information about the speaker, please see page 15.

Using case studies and examples from real business

situations, quality professionals will have hands-on experience

on how to use fishbones and the 5 Whys to reduce problems

    rooted in miscommunication.

The seminar redefines the process of communication in a way

we can adapt our quality and lean skills to perform correctives

    and continuous improvement.

The solutions proposed in the seminar are an opportunity

for quality and lean professionals to lead their organizations

toward improved communication and reduce unwanted costs

    associated with this “soft” factor.

    Learning Objectives:

    1. Define the process of communication in quality terms.

    2. Grasp where “defects” can happen.

    3. Outline new contributing categories for a

    communication process fishbone.

    4. Practice the use of fishbone and the 5 Whys to

determine root causes and design countermeasures.

After this half-day seminar, participants will view the use of

Fishbone Diagrams and the 5 Whys in a whole new light.

REDUCING WASTE AND MISUNDERSTANDINGS IN INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

Leader: Sam Yankelevitch For more information about the speaker, please see page 15.

When projects require the involvement of team players from

other countries, the possibility of misunderstandings can have

a negative impact on the quality, timeline, scope, and budget of

    the project.

Variation associated with multiple languages, different

cultures, and physically separated team players, creates

additional levels of complexity, increasing risk for the project.

This seminar clarifies questions surrounding language,

culture, and distance with a mindset that allows lean-quality

professionals to grasp these subjects and address them with

    their current skillset.
