At this middle school day consists of six one-hour classperiods. Students switch class each hour. Teacher are given oneplanning period, but the remaining five class periods can be quitehectic, with one class rushing out as another rushed in.
Teacher A:Teacher A signals to her class at 08:58 that the bell will ring
in two minutes. She instructs the students to place all materials inthe supply boxes. She motions to the materials supervisor to collectthe materials and put them in their proper places. She reminds all
the students to clear and collect all trash from their spaces. theteacher walks to the door and opens it. The bell rings, and theteacher quickly dismisses each row, beginning with the ones in whichall the students have reorganized their spaces and returned allmaterials to their proper places. The students exit in an orderlyfashion. An onlooker would notice that the room is neat, organized, and ready for the next class to enter (because rows are notdismissed until everything is in place). Miraculously, the teacher hadnothing to do with returning the room to its original order (otherthan training the students to do it for her)

Teacher B:The bells rings and teacher B is caught off
guard. Students are still in groups and materialsare scattered about. There is no obviousprocedure for returning materials. Studentsbegin frantically gathering their personalbelongings and rushing out of the room. The
teacher orders the students not to leave until allthe materials have been returned, but few obeythe teacherscommand. Desks are out of orderand supplies are everywhere. These students areracing to their next classes and the teacher isfrazzled. Unfortunately, another class is arrivingonly to be greeted by this mass display of chaos.

The Dreikurs Model:
Autocratic Teachers:This is the teacher whohas to control everything students do and isoften threatened when students vary in theirbehaviour. They show this by handing outharsh sentences for even small infractions of
the rules.
Permissive Teachers: Anything goes type ofteacher whose classroom is typically in chaos.

democratic classroom which has the followingcharacteristics. Order necessary for required workis present.
Rule, responsibilities, and consequences, inwhich students have collaborated, are in place.
Mutual trust exists between students and teachers.Cooperation is more evident than competition.
The classroom atmosphere is warm and friendly.Group discussions of class concerns are routine.
The teacher is more concerned with class progressthan personal prestige. Students are encouragedand helped to learn from their mistakes.
