Kia ora / Talofa lava, We have had a stunning couple of weeks. Our powhiri to welcome our 13 new students, 12 new whānau and three new staff last week was a wonderful learning experience and well attended. Our students led and performed haka; Karanga and waiata. Our whole staff - Admin included, have been practising our haka and reo and we all have a key focus on tikanga Māori this year. Our manuhiri (visitors) were outstanding and sang to support their speaker with enthusiasm. Special mention must be made of one of our Dads, Tom, who chose to mihi on the pae pae, for the first time ever - in front of 400 people! What an amazing role model he was and the children were so impressed that they clapped! Our whole school kiwaha - key focus is ‘Patua te whakama’ which means ‘feel the fear and do it anyway!’ Last Friday we all rose to this challenge and will continue to do so throughout this year. I have had the privilege of visiting all classes and there is a very purposeful and focused attitude throughout our school. Whilst academic achievement in literacy and numeracy are our priority, we aim to engage, excite, and empower all of our students to excel. To do this we offer a range of learning opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom. This term we have started (for the first time at Ōpāwa School), a Pasifika Group. This group meets weekly and is led by Maria Frew, supported by Martha and accompanied by Albany and Pamela from Tama Mai Saute Dance Academy. Watch this space for more news about the mahi these students are doing. Other opportunities this term include: Music - individual lessons and training band Play zones - whole school (see timetable inside this newsletter) Mini ball (Year 3/4) Whānau fun with Martha - sport / skateboarding Wed after school RAMs basketball mentoring (Year 7/8) We look forward to connecting with you on Friday at our school picnic from 5-7pm. My name is Louisa Stewart and I, along with my friend Kim Steetskamp, are the

founders of Clothed in Love. After determining the need there is amongst many

families in Christchurch when it comes to clothing their children at times in their lives,

we wanted to be part of the answer.

Our organisation was established at the end of 2020 with the vision to provide any families in need with free clothing including shoes, jackets or practical seasonal items free of charge. These have come from the generosity of people in Christchurch who have an excess of good quality second hand (and sometimes new) items that they wanted to see go to others. Kim and I have been collecting these donations and now have a bank of items for children aged Prem to Pre Teen (Size 14). Next we want to get these out to families in need as soon as possible. If you are in need of support follow the link below to fill out your details. All information that comes to us is confidential to our Admin team and we ask for only the bare minimum of details to best give what you need and get it to you as quickly as possible.
