Puritan Belief System

1. Human beings exist for the glory of God.2. The Bible is the sole expression of God’s will

and should be taken literally.3. The Puritans believed in predestination = God

has already decided who will achieve salvation and who will not. This is determined at the time of your birth.

4. All devout Puritans searched their souls with great rigor and frequency for signs of grace (Grace, as defined by American Heritage Dictionary, is 1) divine love and protection bestowed freely on people)

Page 9: Puritanism = Unit One Puritan Plain Style. Puritans Going to Church

Puritan Belief System

1. It is only through God’s grace that human beings can be saved from damnation.

2. The Puritans felt that they could accomplish good only through continual hard work and self-discipline.

3. God is an absolute ruler who is merciless, angry, and revengeful.

4. God intervenes in one’s daily life. This doctrine is known as providence.

5. Human beings are born in original sin. Of themselves, they are totally depraved and deserve nothing less than the damnation of Hellfire.

“Huswifery”

• The poem we are about to read is an extended metaphor expressing the poet’s deep belief in God and in God’s presence in all parts of daily life.

• “Huswifery” compares the housekeeping task of making clothe with the gift of God’s salvation.

• The poem is like a prayer imploring God to guide the speaker, as a worker masters his tools, to do his bidding.

• Taylor wants to live a modest life, to act according to God’s laws, and to submit to God’s will; by so doing he hopes to achieve eternal glory.

The spinning wheel…the loom…

Page 20: Puritanism = Unit One Puritan Plain Style. Puritans Going to Church

“Huswifery”

• Make me, O Lord, Thy spinning wheel complete.

• Thy holy word my distaff make for me.

• Make mine affections Thy swift flyers neat

• And make my soul Thy holy spoole to be.

• My conversation make to be Thy reel

• And reel the yarn thereon spun of Thy wheel.

Page 21: Puritanism = Unit One Puritan Plain Style. Puritans Going to Church

Second Stanza

• Make me Thy loom then, knit therein this twine:

• And make thy holy spirit, Lord, wind quills:

• Then weave the web Thyself. The yarn is fine.

• Thine ordinances make my fulling mills.

• Then dye the same in heavenly colors choice.

• All pinked with varnished flowers of paradise.

Page 22: Puritanism = Unit One Puritan Plain Style. Puritans Going to Church

Third Stanza

• Then clothe therewith mine understanding, will,

• Affections, judgment, conscience, memory

• My words, and actions, that their shine may fill

• My ways with glory and thee glorify.

• Then mine apparel shall display before Ye

• That I am clothed in holy robes for glory.
