• The pumpkin got its name from the Greek word “pepon” which means “large melon.”
• “Pepon” was changed by the French into “pompon.”
• The English changed "pompon" to “pumpion.”
• American colonists changed “pumpion” into “pumpkin.”

The inside of the pumpkin contains three parts:
1. Pulp – the part of the pumpkin you can cook for pie and bread
2. Brains – the fibrous strands and seeds
3. Seeds - also called pepitas
