Engineering TeamPeter Kaltenbach:Peter's expertise is in mechanical design, concept generation, material selection, industrial design implementation and project management. Focused on the client’s objectives, Peter has worked with large companies such as Motorola, Dell and Symbol Technologies at all stages of the product development cycle, as well as helped numerous Austin technology companies, startups and entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life. Peter began his professional career at National Instruments where he was responsible for the mechanical design of data acquisition, control and automation products including the Compact FieldPoint controller series and a number of SCXI and PXI instruments. Prior to joining Pump Studios, Peter was a lead engineer and project manager at Design Edge. Peter earned his engineering degree from Rice University in Houston and grew up outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico in an "off-the-grid", solar and wind powered house.

Kevin Keller:Kevin excels at identifying innovative solutions to complex problems through creative problem solving techniques and an ability to look at problems from different perspectives. Kevin started his career working in the rugged hand held space for Telxon Corporation and then gained broader product design experience working for Design Edge, Mixer Group, and most recently frog design. During that time he worked on wide range of products including tablet PC’s, notebooks, scanners, pet products, medical products, and wearable electronics. Some of the companies Kevin has worked with include Symbol, HP, Motion Computing, Dell, Oakley and many smaller start-up companies. Throughout his career Kevin has played many roles on projects including proposal writing, project management, and engineering. Kevin received his degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He is an avid beach volleyball player and snowboarder from the Chicago area.

Engineering TeamBrad Collins:Brad’s goal is to provide our clients with outstanding strategic engineering, business development, client relations, project management, and inter-company collaboration. Previously, Brad was the Director of Engineering at Design Edge in Austin, TX where his responsibilities included management of the engineering team, business development, forecasting, client relations, project management, and mechanical engineering product development. Brad also worked in the corporate laptop division of Compaq Computer Corporation where he gained valuable experience in consumer electronics design, manufacturing, and production. Over his career Brad has been involved with engineering and management of a range of products for companies including Polycom, 3M, AMD, Dell, HP, Motorola and Symbol Technologies. He received his BS in mechanical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 1992. Brad is a native Texan originating from Houston. And in his spare time, Brad is training to run his next marathon.

Approach•Identify our services that are most appropriately matched to your project.

•Target areas where we can add the most value, while leaving the other aspects of the project in your expert hands, or the hands of one of our strategic partners.

•Plan where we fit into the process and also how we will effectively transition the program back into your hands.

•Get up to speed on the program requirements and adapt to your organization quickly and efficiently.

•Work collaboratively with our local and global communities of product development professionals.

•Exit the program gracefully when our services are no longer required.

Experience

CADWe work primarily in Pro/Engineer Wildfire (Wildfire 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0). We also have experience using SolidWorks and can support this platform, if required.

PrototypingWe work with outside vendors for rapid prototypes (metal, plastic, castings, etc.), and through our network of prototype vendors can generally turn around rapid prototyping parts in as little as a few days.

AnalysisWe use Pro/Mechanica for structural analysis and Pro/Engineer Mechanism Dynamics to analyze the motion of moving components. As required, we work with several outside labs for mechanical testing (drop, vibration, HALT, etc.). Partners at Pump have been directly involved in qualifying products per mechanical and environmental specifications, including generating test plans and hands-on experience in the test lab.

Program ManagementWe begin each program (in the quoting phase) by building a comprehensive Gantt chart in Microsoft Project. This allows us to readily communicate our assumptions regarding scheduling and resourcing with our clients. Throughout the project we use the Gantt chart to evaluate progress and alert the team (internal and external) to critical milestones, schedule progress, and potential pitfalls.

Tools

Page 11: Pump Studios Overview

VGX Pharmaceuticals (Inovio) Developed second generation Cellectra electroporation applicator used for intradermal treatments. Supported low volume prototype and manufacturing builds for pre-clinical testing and clinical trials.

Electrosonics Medical Developed mechanical architecture and supported mechanical design of two Electrosonics programs: Pneumosonics (pneumothorax detection), and Otosonics (ear effusion detection and characterization).

NeuroTechs LLC New product development.

Spectranetics Supported mechanical architecture and design of next generation Excimer laser ablation system.**

Tyrell (Zeno) Mechanical design for next generation home use medical products utilizing precise heat therapy.**

Barton Medical Concept generation for lifting and moving bariatric patients, specifically in relation to existing Barton bariatric beds and chairs.**

Sonic Golf - System 1: Developed a club insert and small, wireless electronic receiver that converts the rhythm of a golf swing, via accelerometers within the club insert, into a sound generated by the receiver. The tight constraints inside golf club shafts and high impact forces seen during a swing presented a challenging environment for electronics packaging, protection, and sealing. Our design solutions were suitable for golf professionals, including endorsements by Vijay Singh who trains with Sonic Golf.

Dell Notebooks: Worked with the Dell industrial design group on multiple Dell notebook platforms to integrate new industrial design languages into both existing and future internal electrical components. Also collaborated with Dell mechanical engineering teams to innovate complex mechanisms, improve designs for manufacturing, and cost reduce assemblies.

Oakley - Thump Sunglasses (generation 2 &3): Worked on the speaker boom assembly and mechanism to handle cable routing and fit adjustment. Also modified the flex assembly for various geometries.**

Motion Computing: Worked with a Contract manufacturer to solve issues of antenna placement, various enclosure touch solutions, and battery module designs for two of Motion’s touch-screen tablets (one standard and one small form factor).**

Symbol/Motorola: Worked on numerous rugged, handheld mobile devices & accessories that typically packaged shock-mounted, fully functioning mobile PC electronics, LCD screens, wireless (WAN/LAN) antennas, keypads, and barcode/imaging scanners.**

Compaq Notebooks: One partner at Pump previously worked in the corporate notebook division of Compaq Computers (now HP) for over 3 years, designing notebook components and accessories.**

National Instruments: One partner at Pump previously worked in the distributed I/O and modular instruments groups at National Instruments. Specifically designing controllers for Compact FieldPoint and PXI instruments such as the PXI digitizers.**

MediaCart Mechanical design for second generation MediaCart shopping system. System developed to meet harsh requirements for grocery store and parking lot environment while integrating cutting edge technology.

Dell Computer Corporation Mechanical design for enterprise printers and servers requiring continuous collaboration with manufacturers and industrial design.

3M Mechanical design of 3M wall display requiring close collaboration with industrial design, electrical design, research and development and manufacturing teams. Design overcame structural challenges while maintaining design intent, incorporated new materials and technologies and met high level of standards required by client.**

Symbol Technologies (Motorola) Project integrating a tablet computer and scanner with a shopping cart handle to create a mobile shopping experience for in-store marketing. To charge the tablet and scanner a large bank of charge docks were designed to go at the front of the store near the carts. Program managed to meet aggressive schedule from client.**
