Some of the worlds best musicians are once againheading for Bradfield this summer. Stephanie Burnslooks forward to the treats in store.

It may not be the likeliest of locations for aninternationally acclaimed music festival, buteach summer Bradfield welcomeshundreds of visitors to the magical Grade Ilisted Parish Church of St Nicholas for a week-long programme of world-class concerts.

This year, from 25 June to 2 July, audienceswill be treated to performances from the likesof Ensemble Berlin, Julian and Jiaxin LloydWebber and VOCES8. And its not just classicalmusic. Along with pianist John Lenehan andpercussionist Paul Carvis, Emma Johnson MBEwill explore the role of the clarinet in jazz.

The aim of the festival is to continuebringing higher profile artists to Bradfield and thats what weve achieved with this years programme, said festival secretaryKeith Hoyland.

One extra special musician is formerSheffield school pupil SAC Philippa Hobbs ofthe Woodwind Ensemble of the Band of theRAF College, an ensemble that brings togetherthe two established wind quintets whichregularly perform around the country insupport of the RAF. They play by permission ofthe Air Force Board of the Defence Counciland their appearance at Bradfield is in aid ofthe RAF Music Charitable Trust.

As a youngster, Philippa played the flute in

The City ofSheffield YouthOrchestra and theHallam Sinfonia. She is very much lookingforward to performing in her localsurroundings and is excited to be part of thisyears festival.

Philippa is not the only one excited to beplaying in Bradfield just check out thetestimonials (left) but for most of theperformers its a rather more unusual locationthan theyre used to. Many of the artists havefantastic riders (conditions put forward byartists in order for them to play) but weve gotlimited facilities, said Keith. Its pub toiletsand Portaloos, no dedicated dressing roomsfor males and females and no onsite provisionfor showers, so we have to make it up to themin other ways the venue, the acoustics, andthe hospitality we provide all encourageartists to come back again and again.

Its the intimate setting audiences of just300 when many of the performers are used toplaying to crowds of thousands thatprovides another huge draw. Theyre notstuck on a stage totally removed from theiraudience but instead surrounded by them.

While the majority of ticket sales comefrom Yorkshire, Derbyshire, East Midlands and

    WHAT THE ARTISTS SAY

I am lookingforward to returning with my wifeand fellow cellist Jiaxin andpianist Rebeca Omordia. Togetherwe will be sharing a highlypersonal programme of beautifulmusic with one of our favouriteaudiences.

    Emma Johnson MBE

St Nicholas Church perched uphigh overlooking the surroundingcountryside is one of my favouriteplaces to play in England.

John LenehanI always look forward toperforming at the Bradfieldfestival. It's a wonderful, peacefulsetting and the audience is aswarm and welcoming as any Ihave encountered.

Each year,The Old Horns erect amarquee in thechurchyard for intervaldrinks and Our Cow Mollyice creams and they puton pre-concert dinners soattendees can grab a bite beforehand.

This years festival set to be one of the most ambitious yet comes hot off the heels of a very successful concert that was heldin March. In memory of Keiths late wife Heather, the event atWisewood Methodist Church attracted an audience of 180. Around150 of those stayed behind after the music to enjoy thecomplimentary refreshments including ten fruit cakes Keithmade himself.

We had a great night and it was a fitting tribute to Heather'smemory, said Keith. Im so grateful to everyone for supporting theconcert and to all who helped in any way whatsoever. My friendGerry Kersey, BBC Radio Sheffield presenter, did a great job as MC, too.

Once all expenses had been paid, Keith was delighted to donate500 to the Cantamus Girls Choir, 400 to the Sheffield Music Hub,200 to Wisewood Methodist Church and 230 to the BradfieldFestival of Music.

With this donation, artists are already booked for the 2017 and2018 festivals, and Keith is currently working on the 2019programme. One of next years highlights is Johnny Dankworthand Cleo Laines daughter, jazz singer Jacqui Dankworth, whowill perform with her husband, American keyboard player Charlie Wood.

In the meantime, tickets are still available for this year so dontmiss your chance to witness these world-class artists while theyreon our doorstep.

With great food, ales and eventsrunning throughout the year, its nosurprise that the Old Red Lion drawsa crowd every night of the week.

Barely a week goes by without news of another local pubclosing down or changing hands. With ever-increasingbeer tax and cheap supermarket deals, many localboozers have fallen prey to this modern curse.

How refreshing, then, that Old Red Lion in Grenoside isbucking the trend by welcoming a great crowd every night ofthe week. Along with their many regulars from Grenoside andfurther afield, theyre joined by mountain bikers, dog walkersand hikers whove taken advantage of the Greno Woods trails.

With its exposed stone walls, dark wooden tables, open firesand flagstone floors, the Old Red Lion is every bit thetraditional rustic pub. Throw in excellent food, cask ales and agreat selection of drinks, and its easy to see how theyve builtsuch a recipe for success.

Bank Holidays are even more popular and Monday 30 Maywill be no exception. Therell be a disco and music quiz withcash prizes from 3pm and food will be served until 5pm. If theweather permits, a BBQ will be sizzling away outside and thekids can jump around to their hearts content on the freebouncy castle.

On the first Bank Holiday of the month 1 May the pubplayed host to a more unusual event. As well as the usualdrinkers and diners, around 100 Morris dancers gathered at the

pub on a tour of the area. After a buffet lunch andsome great performances, they piled back on to theircoaches and continuedon to the next venue. Itsevents such as these thatput the Old Red Lion atthe centre of thecommunity.

The pub is owned by the Halsall family, who have severalpubs in the region, including The Crown Inn at Totley, The AshInn and the Old Moor Tavern in Wombwell, The Lundhill Tavernin Hemingfield and The Cross Keys at Darfield.

Head chef Paul Johnson, who has more than 30 yearsexperience in the industry, joined the Halsalls three years agoand has worked at the Old Red Lion for two years. In that time,he has transformed Sunday lunch, which is served 12-6pmeach week. When I first started we were doing 60 or 70 mealson a Sunday now its more like 240, he said. Weve also gotan extensive standard menu and weekly specials that are reallypopular. The steaks, pies and fish go down particularly well.

Whether its chilly outside and youre after some shelter fromthe icy winds or the sun is shining on the outdoor terrace andyou fancy a beer in the sun, Old Red Lion is the place to be.

  • Back in March, protests, strikes and widespread publicityand social media campaigns took place followingJeremy Hunts proposed new contracts for juniordoctors. The junior doctors then made the bold decision totake the Government to court.

In order to raise the funds for judicial review, the doctorsturned to Crowd Justice, a legal crowdfunding websitededicated to enabling would-be litigants to raise money forcases in the public interest.

The NHS crowdfunding campaign hit its initial target of25,000 within just 24 hours, and the junior doctors have (atthe time of writing) raised over 97,000 from over 3,000backers.

This raises important legal questions on the subject of costs.Litigation is undoubtedly an incredibly expensive process; iscrowdfunding really a potential model for financing legalproceedings? It is no secret that the legal system cannot keepup with the digital revolution and the development ofcompanies that allow individuals or bodies to appeal forfinancial backing from the everyday man in the street iscertainly attractive to potential claimants.

Historically, funding someone elses litigation sothat the action could go to court, in exchange fora share of the potential proceeds, was a crimecalled champerty. Similarly, the law did notallow legal claims to be funded (ormaintained) by a third party; this was onthe basis that a third party maymanufacture evidence or inflate claims inorder for them personally to benefit. Eventhough the principles of maintenance andchamperty are still in existence, with theerosion of legal aid, parliament and thecourts are currently more receptive tothird party funding arrangements.

Ultimately, the rules againstmaintenance and champerty areto protect the purity of justice and

the public interest. Is the crowdfunding of this NHS campaignin the public interest and protecting the purity of justice? There are certainly those who think so.

It is argued that the difference between champerty andwhat crowdfunding does is that the funders are donors ratherthan investors; the donors will not receive anything back fromtheir donation. So what does this mean in terms of costs? If thedoctors claim fails, could their backers be liable to pay theother sides costs?

The case of Arkin v Borchard Lines Ltd examined the costsliability of a third party funder. The Court of Appeal held that, inthe circumstances of that case, liability should be limited to theextent of funding provided. However, it recognised that, although that case did not amount to champerty, other thirdparty arrangements that did could be liable for the entire costsof the proceedings.

So could the successful party go after over 3,000 backers inorder to enforce a costs order? Probably not, as the backersdont stand to benefit from the proceedings and practically itwould be difficult and costly to do so.

Further crowdfunding projects for legal disputes have arisen, including Action For Cabbies Black Cabbies v TfL where over345,000 of a 600,000 target has been pledged so far.

We will have to wait and see if crowdfunding becomes thenorm for litigation in the future, and how the courts dealwith it if it does.

Chapeltown Charity Spring FairLocal crafter and former owner of Maries Tea Room, MarieBoyle, and her twin sister Sarah Waddams hosted a charityevent at the Scout Hut, Chapeltown, which raised 627.77 forSheffield Helipad Appeal.

Marie said: The success was down to our community, whocame together to support a good cause. We just wanted to saythank you to everyone who came to support us, our volunteers, and to businesses who donated prizes for the raffle. It was alsonice to see our customers from the Tea Room. HaybrookChapeltown also helped to support our event by printing, distributing leaflets and producing banners.

Marie and Sarah visited the helipad site to present thecheque and meet Duncan Batty, head of fundraising forSheffield Hospitals Charity, as well as two trauma nurse co-ordinators, Mike Cole and Neil Strawbridge, from the MajorTrauma Centre (MTC).

The A&E department at the Northern General became anMTC in April 2013 and serves a population of 1.8 million people, which covers South Yorkshire, parts of the Humber, Derbyshireand East Midlands.

We saw the existing helipad, which is 20 years old, and thenew one, which will be launched in the summer, said Marie.Currently patients are transferred from the helicopter into anambulance then transported to the MTC. The new one is muchcloser to the department so there is no need for an ambulance. This not only saves time and but also allows the patient toreceive specialist treatment quicker, which increases theirchance of survival.

The cost of this helipad is approximately 2million and morefunds are still needed. They are currently at 86 per cent of theirtarget.

Marie and Sarah are planning more events to raise money forthe appeal and support Sheffield Hospitals Charity. As well as anautumn fair, they will host the spring fair next April. Their newwebsite, www.twinsraiseforcharity.co.uk, will be launched soon.

The trio advised Chris on which exercises will get him into topshape, what to eat and drink and ways to stay motivated during histraining regime.

Chris has selected Cancer Research UK as his chosen charity as hismum beat breast cancer over 20 years ago but sadly he lost his dad,Bill, to stomach cancer last December and his older sister Janette tobrain cancer 13 years ago. Chris said: It was really useful to get advicefrom the students on key aspects of my training such as adjusting torunning outside rather than on a treadmill, the best diet to followand keeping motivated to train.

The students were very knowledgeable and gave me someexcellent tips and information which I am going to implement intomy training plan. Dont have time to playgolf? Think again, andcheck out the superbfacilities at TankersleyPark Golf Club.

If your lasting impression of golf clubs is intimidatingmembers dressed up to the nines and every round takinghours to complete, allow Tankersley Park Golf Club tochange your mind entirely.

Determined to keep up with the ever-changing times, theclub has adopted a refreshing new approach that makeseveryone feel welcome and able to take up the hobby.

As marketing chair and member Debra Travis explains, thisnew way of thinking is in line with England Golfs initiative toget more people into the sport. The idea behind it is to openthe sport up to more people. We all have busy lives and thethought of starting a new pastime that could take up to fivehours to play has put many people off in the past.

Golf clubs realise that if they want to retain their membersand, of course, attract the younger ones, they have to movewith the times gone are the stuffy rules of strict dress codes.

As well as a real push to recruit junior members, they havealso introduced new nine-hole competitions. Taking half theusual time, these options open up the possibility of playinggolf to many people who have previously felt unable to takepart due to their other professional or social commitments.

With this evolution has come another first for the club afemale greens chairperson. Cath Lake, the lady who organised

the 72-hole Macmillan golf challenge featured in Pulse lastJuly, is delighted to take up this position.

And these arent the only changes at the club. Work on thenew driving range, which is being supported by a LotteryGrant from Sport England, will commence soon. This newpractise facility will be open to all including the generalpublic and will be a welcome addition to the area for allbudding golfers.

The land where the club resides has a fascinating past andhas had many uses over the last few centuries. It was an oakforest, a civil war battlefield, a baronial deer park, a coal andironstone mining area and even a battle tank testing groundbefore being transformed into a beautifully manicured golfcourse.

The course was designed in 1907 by Martin Hawtree, one ofthe most famous golf course architects in history. Martin andhis company worked on courses all over the world includingRoyal Birkdale and Sunningdale. More recently, his companyhas been working with Donald Trump on his new courses, including Trump International.

    EDUCATIONKIP McGRATH

SATs are over! Let summer beginbut beware!

SATs are over. For Year 6 children at least, the pressure isoff for now. But their education journey is entering acritical stage, at the end of which will be public examsleading to their first qualifications at the age of 16.

Over the years, Keystage 2 SATs have taken on animportance, leading to much stress for children and theirteachers.

SATs are really about holding the schools to account for theprogress their pupils make and the standards they reach. Theydo not affect the choice of school, unlike the old 11+, so whydo the children taking them get so stressed?

Keystage 2 SATs are the first formal tests primary childrenwill have encountered. Yes, SATs are being brought back intoKeystage 1 (the end of the infant years), but their assessmentsare delivered more informally. For 11 year olds, they will enteran exam room, be seated in rows and will have theirassessments taken under exam conditions. I am sure we allremember that feeling. For most of us, even if very bright, itwill have been stressful.

Then there has been the preparation: months of past papersand schools days full of teaching to the test. Those not quiteup to the grade may have been withdrawn from class for SATsboosters. These may improve their final marks, but thedisadvantage is that they are likely to take place during more

    enjoyableaspects ofthecurriculum.

Somechildrenmay even have had booster lessons before and after school. All will have had increasing amounts of homework.

Now SATs are over, children and teachers alike will have littleleft in the tank and, quite likely, not much appetite for thestaples of maths, reading and writing. It is a very unevenlearning journey but children should not take their eye off theball as their path through school still has a long way to go.

Most high schools will test their new Year 7 intake sometime after starting. Secondary education marks the beginningof a new and very important phase with GCSEs and other realqualifications at the end of it.

I hope our primary school leavers enjoy the summer. Relaxand recharge. You have earned it.

David Kaye is the Centre Director for Kip McGrath EducationCentres Sheffield North in Ecclesfield and is a formerheadteacher with 25 years experience in South and WestYorkshire.

  • PULSEINTERVIEW

WHERE THERESA WILLAhead of his performance at Doncaster Racecourse this month,Stephanie Burns speaks to multi-talented Pop Idol Will Young.

Blogger, documentary presenter, LGBT activist, animal rightssupporter, and oh yeah pop star-cum-actor, youre aslikely to read about Will Youngs various campaigns in the

news as you are to see him performing on stage or screen thesedays.

I was one of the 12 million rapt viewers who watched Will rocketto fame as the very first Pop Idol in 2002 all baggy jeans and rawtalent, he captured the nations heart in an instant.

But from his first cheesy (Dr Foxs words, not mine) rendition ofBlame It on the Boogie at his audition aged 22, hes come a longway. And as we chatted on the phone ahead of his performance atDoncaster Racecourse in May, I discovered that there are manymore sides to the 37-year-old than Id really expected to find.

For one, he takes his job seriously. At the end of the day, themost important thing [in my work] is that its for the audience, hesays, noisily making a cup of coffee at his friends house in Londonin the background. Im like a servant. Its like being the waiter in arestaurant, Im just the deliverer of this stuff. I get a lot of pleasureout of that because thats my job on stage, to make the night runas smoothly as it can, and thats a really fulfilling job.

Its the carte blanche to do whatever he likes with his tours andlive performances changing the look of them, the arrangementof the music, the lighting that he loves most about this aspect ofhis work. Any great art always has quite an important groundingmessage, he says, but that doesnt mean that its really serious. Ilet my imagination run riot and its really fun. If you want to comealong to a show and have a laugh and enjoy some confetti, thenthats what weve got. Or if you want to write a thesis on the show, then you can probably do that as well. An academic analysis of apop show now theres an idea.

Hes not entirely joking. Wills a deep thinker he studied politicsat the University of Exeter and, in the last few years, has had goodreason to delve into the way the mind works. On the verge ofbreakdown, he removed himself from the spotlight and took thetime he needed to heal. His journey back from the brink issomething hes spoken about openly, but this frankness doesntstem from a mission to educate the world on mental wellbeing.

As long as I feel that its appropriate and safe for me to do so,then Im happy to share anything that Im comfortable sharing, he

says. Ive been privileged enough to have had a lot of very goodhelp and Im quite enlightened so I will talk about these kind ofthings. But its not for me to force other people to talk about thatkind of stuff.

His sixth studio album 85% Proof which Clash described as amasterclass in delivering a mature pop record took just ten daysto write and debuted at number one in the UK Albums Chart whenit was released last year. Its a mixture of upbeat pop and soulfulmelodies that reflect the difficulties he faced in this dark periodand the light that he eventually found at the end of the tunnel.

While mental wellbeing in the broader sense isnt on his missionagenda, young LGBT peoples mental health certainly is. He hasblasted Education Secretary Nicky Morgan, saying shes reluctantto tackle homophobic bullying in schools and is dead behind theeyes. Ouch.

I get really hot under the collar about [the lack of support foryoung LGBT people], he says. And rightfully so because very littleis done and I think we all rest on our laurels. There is no real hugepush and I think there has to be. So Im kind of like the guy whojust shouts and screams and gets a bit petulant and Im quitehappy to do that.

Hes quietened a little since his Morgan bashing and is currentlycollating information, finding out what action teachers, youngLGBT charities, parents and the children themselves want taken. We absolutely havent heard the end of this argument and its clearthat Will wont rest until he gets the change hes fighting for.

In the meantime, hes continuing to write blogs, filmdocumentaries, promote his work with WWF, take on acting jobs, and of course focus on his music. Is there anything left for himto try his hand at? Theres nothing that Im dying to do, heexplains. Two years ago I had this whole list of things and noweverythings like a bonus. Its a bit like Im on a boat and I let thecurrent take me to wherever it takes me.

The fear of losing something can actually stop someoneenjoying it but Im very pleased with what Ive done and it allowsme to really enjoy it all, because Im not scared of it going away. But I would never have imagined that I could have incorporated allof these different parts of me into one job never in my wildestdreams.

Nissan turns upthe drama on the GT-RThe current-gen Nissan GT-R hasbeen with us now since 2007,and every year since theJapanese company has tickledits underbelly and internalworkings an extra dollop ofpower here, a suspension tweakthere. You get the idea.

Now Nissan has really gone totown with the MY17 edition andthe changes are the mostdramatic yet. In essence, the carslooks have been changed givingit a more aggressive stance onthe road with betteraerodynamic properties. Theresa more luxurious new interior with fewer buttons and better sound deadening. The suspensionhas been changed to give better handling and improve ride quality. Power has also been raisedto 562hp.

The order books opened this month with first deliveries this autumn.

Feel the noiseThe latest generation of the Audi R8is a welcome relief. Instead offollowing the rest of the industry bydownsizing and turbo-charging theirengines, the R8 has stuck to its gunsand kept to a naturally-aspiratedformula. Not only are these enginesmore responsive compared to theirturbo-charged counterparts, buttheyre considerably louder too.

As you would expect, the R8 Coupe is a fantastically aurally stimulating machine butthis can only get better because now the Spyder version is coming along.

Available to order from later in the spring with deliveries at the end of the year, thenew R8 Spyder will come with a 532hp 5.2-litre V10 powerhouse mated to an S-Tronicdual-clutch gearbox. As with the Coupe, theres no manual available.

Diesel joins the ClubWith the launch of the latestMini Clubman back in October oflast year, it was only a matter oftime before the most fuel-efficient diesel variant wasplaced under the bonnet.

Its called the One D Clubmanand itll be powered by a 1.5-litrethree-cylinder diesel producing116hp, which can get theClubman from 0-62mph in 10.4seconds. Not bad for a car whichin manual trim emits less than100g/km of CO2 and manages74.3mpg on the combined cycle.Automatic is slightly less frugal.

High standard equipmentlevels which includes the likes ofMini Navigation, DAB, Bluetooth,Cruise control, MINI Connectedand MINI Excitement Pack, 16-inch alloy wheels, sports leathersteering wheel and automaticlights and wipers. Available now.Priced from 21,375.

Reach for the skyWant your German super-coupe to be a littlemore draughty? Well we have good newsfor you; the C63 is going topless. Its the C63AMG Cabriolet and its an electrically-operated multi-layered fabric job which canbe lowered or raised at speeds of up to31mph.

As itll be based on the C63 AMG coupe, itllcome with the same 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8

motor producing either 469hp or 503hp in C63 S guise, and itll come with all the sameequipment options. It literally is a C63 with the roof chopped off.

Itll weigh more than the regular car, and certainly cost more too. But will you really carewhen there are millions of miles of blue sky at your disposal?

The C63 Cabriolet will be launched in August.

Jordan Cutforth rounds up the latestfrom the world of motoring.
