When you start a new job you want to make a good impression so your new boss thinks you are reliable. So consider what to wear on that first day. An employer won’t tell you what to wear, but clothes are important.

Offices have a dress code. For a man this means a black or grey suit, shirt and tie. For women it’s a dark business suit, or a dress and jacket.

Many companies have a casual dress code, often on a Friday. However, this doesn’t mean jeans and T-shirts. You still need to be smart and respectable, but bright colours are OK.

In some jobs smart clothes are unnecessary. Workers in practical jobs may be able to wear casual clothes, as suits and ties wouldn’t be suitable. In dirty industries, workers have to wear overalls over their own clothes, to protect them.

See what your colleagues wear and do the same. What you wear says a lot about the kind of person you are!
