organization of 2nd National Conference of Institute of Pharmacy (NCIP) and wide appreciation of public

lecture by Dr. B. Suresh, President, Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and Dr. Parag Kulkarni, CEO,

Iknowlation Research Labs have provided motivation to us for continuous strive for excellence. The

Institute is continuously involved in teaching and research by organizing various events and expert

lectures throughout the year. I express my gratitude to Dr. Anup K Singh, Director General, Nirma

a decade of publication of Radiance and will set stage for commencement of eleventh issue. The

highlights of this issue include National Conference of Institute of Pharmacy (NCIP), Public lecture by Dr.

B. Suresh, President, Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) and Dr. Parag Kulkarni, CEO, Iknowlation Research

Labs along with details of events regularly organized at the institute. Various achievements of faculty

Regulatory compliance - understanding October 8, 2016

Public lectures:

The public lecture of Prof. B. Suresh, Vice-Chancellor, JSS University, Mysore and President, Pharmacy Council of India was

organized on February 3, 2017. Prof. B. Suresh delivered public lecture on “LIES and LIARS”. He has contributed immensely to the

field of pharmacy education and pharmacy profession in last three decades. He is also a Co-Chairman of Indian Pharmacopoeia

Commission. During the public lecture, he shared his views and experiences on innovation and leadership. He emphasized that

to be a successful person, qualities like leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, innovative approach and positive attitude are the

driving forces. Leaders who are determined are never afraid of controversies coming in the way of success, rather they tackle

them with a positive attitude and achieve the goal. Additionally, he said, the role of a pharmacist is not only to formulate drugs

rather it is about the responsibility to improve the overall healthcare of a society. More than 400 students, professors and

principals of pharmacy colleges, pharmacists and industry personnel attended the lecture.

The public lecture of Dr. Parag Kulkarni, CEO, Iknowlation Research Labs was organized on February 28, 2017. Dr.Kulkarni is one

of the world’s leading authorities on Business Strategy, Knowledge Innovation, Machine Learning, Systemic Learning and Building

Innovative Knowledge Corporations in the knowledge economy. He delivered lecture on “Empowering Business through

Knowledge Innovation Strategy”. This public lecture provided a fresh meaning to advocate new pathways for change. The

speaker inspired the students to innovate more through many innovation stories.

Refresher Course for Registered

Pharmacist

Foundation Day of Institute of Pharmacy was celebrated on

October 1, 2016. The Chief Guest of the function was Dr.

Madhav Marathe, Vice President, Preclinical Toxicology, Sun

Pharma Advanced Research Company Ltd, (SPARC),

Vadodara. Various competitions like T-Shirt Painting,

Documentary making, Photography, Debate, Elocution and

Extempore were held on the occasion of Foundation Day. 68

students participated in the event enthusiastically. Apart

from this, selected faculty members, Alumni and two

students of B. Pharm. were felicitated for their outstanding

performance. The meritorious students of first, second and

third year B. Pharm were also awarded with the gold medals.

Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University organized refresher

course for registered pharmacist during November 26-27,

2016. It was attended by more than 200 registered

pharmacist from all over Gujarat. Speakers from industries as

well academics delivered expert talks entitled “Future Scope

and Challenges of Pharmacy Practice in India”, “Role of

Pharmacist in Cholesterol Management”, “Patient Counseling

on Anti-Tubercular Drugs”, “Therapeutic Updates on

Asthma”, “AIDS and Hypertension” during the program.

Anti-Ragging Competition

Hands on Training for HPLC & GC

An Anti-ragging poster competition was organized at the

Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University on December 2,

2016. Around 40 under graduate and post graduate

students participated enthusiastically during the event and

the competition was judged by Ms. Sujan Umaraniya,

Assistant Professor, Institute of Architecture, Nirma

University and Dr. Snehal Patel, Assistant Professor, Institute

of Pharmacy, Nirma University. Poster winning first, second

and third prize, were displayed on notice board.

A workshop for the PG students of Institute of Pharmacy on

"Hands on Training for HPLC & GC" was conducted by

Department of Pharmaceutical Analysis, Institute of

Pharmacy under Centre of Continuing Education, Nirma

University on October 14, 2016. This Training Programme

was intended to provide basic understanding, operation and

hands on training of sophisticated instruments like High

Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) and Gas

Chromatograph (GC). The workshop got very good response

and total 22 participants attended the workshop. Hands on

training was given by research scholars of Pharmaceutical

Analysis Department, Institute of Pharmacy.

Extension Activities

Personality development sessions

As a part of the social extension activities, students of

Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma University organized awareness

program highlighting importance of sports for body fitness

for the students of Jamiyatpura primary school children on

October 15, 2016. Students interacted with Jamiyatpura

primary school children on December 3, 2016 and received

feedback for all previously conduced health awareness

programs for them. Students also distributed study material

to the school students.

Institute of Pharmacy has organized series of sessions for

personality and life skills development for students of 3rd

year B. Pharm during January 5-7, 2017. As a part of this

series, Mr. Farhat Umar, Vice President, HR, Learning and

development at Amneal Pharmaceuticals interacted with

students on 'High Performance'. Mr. Vivek Randeria, Leading

Corporate Trainer, Hunch Consultants interacted with

students on 'Creating Winning Personality' and 'Time

Management & importance of communication skills'. The

students gained positive attitude for building winning

personality.

Industrial Visit

National Conference of Institute of

Pharmacy

To enlighten students about the way pharmaceutical

industries works, visit to reputed industries are regularly

organized. Visit to Sun Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Halol, Vadodara

was organized for B. Pharm semester VIII students on

January 7, 2017. Students have visited solid and liquid

manufacturing facilities, interacted, discussed and solved

their queries with employee there.

A 2nd National Conference of Institute of Pharmacy (NCIP

2017) was organized by Institute of Pharmacy, Nirma

University, Ahmedabad on theme of "Emerging Trends in

Drug Discovery, Development and Molecular Targets for

Cancer Research” during January 24-25, 2017. The

conference was inaugurated by Chief Guest Dr. Shilin Shukla,

Professor Emeritus and Ex-Director, Gujarat Cancer Research

Institute and Guest of Honor Dr. Harish Padh, Ex-Vice

Chancellor Sardar Patel University and renowned researcher

in field of Cancer and Genetics. In his inaugural address, the

chief guest Dr. Shilin Shukla encouraged the young

researchers and students to take up research in field of

Oncology. Dr. Harish Padh stressed on interdisciplinary

research as a tool for the fruitful research in the field of

cancer. He also emphasized on early detection of cancer for

successful treatment of cancer and to prevent mortality due

to cancer. More than 300 researchers, students and faculties

participated in the conference. The conference included

various plenary sessions by eminent speakers from industry,

academics & research organizations. The conference also

provided an opportunity to scientists and research scholars

from various organizations to put forth their innovative ideas

and research findings by means of session lectures and more

than 130 poster presentations in various thrust areas of

cancer.

The annual meet of IPNUAA (Institute of Pharmacy Nirma

University Alumni Association) was organized on January 26,

2017. More than 90 alumni members have joined for the

annual meet. B. Pharm. Students arranged various fun

activities for entertainment of Alumni members. Alumni

members have interacted with all faculty members and B.

Pharm final year students, shared their feedback and views.

The annual meet was ended with delicious lunch.

A workshop on the "Computer Aided Drug Design Software"

for the B.Pharm and M.Pharm students, research scholars

and faculties was conducted by Department of

Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Institute of Pharmacy under

Center of Continuing Education, Nirma University. The main

objective of the workshop was to provide conceptual insight

as well as demonstration of important software used for

computer aided drug design. The workshop received good

response and total 22 participants attended the workshop.

The sessions were conducted by internal faculty members;

National level quiz competition ‘NirmaQuest’ was organized

for students of pharmacy as well as non-pharmacy streams

on February, 15, 2017 where Dr. Bhaswat Chakraborty, Senior

Vice President & Chair, Research & Development Core

Committee, Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Ahmedabad was the

chief guest. In his inaugural address, Dr.Chakraborty advised

the students to work hard with high moral standards and

also motivated them to take part in various co-curricular and

extra-curricular activities to be successful in their

professional carrier. More than 110 students had

participated in the quiz competition from various colleges

enthusiastically and prizes of worth Rs. 27000/- were

distributed to winners in each category during the prize

distribution function.

Nirma Institute of Pharmacy Students' Association (NIPSA)

organized a technical fest “ENIGMA-Redefining Excellence”

during February 16-17, 2017. Various technical events

related to pharmacy such as Drug Connect, Pharma Race,

Pharma word, Poster presentation and non-technical events

like Battle of Bands, Debate, Arena of Gamers witnessed a

huge participation from students of colleges all over Gujarat.

Along with it, KRIDANGAN'17, a Sport's activity was also

arranged for sports enthusiasts. There were 600 registrations

received for various events. Dr Bhaswat Chakraborty, Senior

Vice president, Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd. was the chief

guest of the inaugural ceremony.

Ms. Bhumika D. Patel, Assistant Professor, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Pharmacy by

Nirma University, Ahmedabad, Gujarat in October, 2016 for her thesis entitled “Rational Designing,

Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Novel Anti-diabetic Agents” under the guidance of Prof.

Manjunath Ghate.

Dr. Snehal Patel has been appointed as CPCSEA Nominee by Ministry of Environment, Forest, Climate change (Animal welfare

division A) in December 2016.

Research Grants received

Prof. Priti Mehta received research grant worth Rs. 42.12 lakh from AYUSH for the research project entitled

“Evaluation of Radioprotective Potential of Medicinally Important Bamboo Plants in Cancer”. Co-

Investigators: Dr. Snehal Patel, Dr.Sonal Bakshi. She also received research grant worth Rs.16 lakh from SAC-

ISRO for the research project entitled “Determination of Specific Absorption Coefficient for the Dominant

Micro-algal and Macro-algae Species of Indian Coastal Water-A Step towards Developing Biomarkers and

Community based Chlorophyll and Accessory Pigments Algorithms”. Co-Investigators: Dr.Sanjeev Acharya,
