HC refuses tostay AAP MLAs’disqualification

NEW DELHI, Jan 24:

The Delhi High Court todayrefused to stay the Centre’s notifi-cation disqualifying 20 AAPMLAs for holding office of prof-it, but restrained the ElectionCommission (EC) from takingany “precipitate measures” likeannouncing dates for by-polls tillJanuary 29.

Justice Vibhu Bakhru soughtthe response of the poll panel andthe Centre on the AAP legisla-tors’ pleas challenging their dis-qualification for holding office ofprofit.

The High Court summonedthe entire records pertaining tothe proceedings leading to therecommendation of the EC for 20MLAs’ disqualification whichreceived the President’s assent onJanuary 20.

The court said the matterrequired consideration, and henceit would hear it on a day-to-daybasis from January 29 onwards.

It said the court will extend itsdirection restraining the EC fromtaking any “precipitate measures”if required.(PTI)
