The minimum requirments for drain sizes are given in tabel 6.3.3.7. Due to the fact that these systems normally will not be operated or tested under freezing conditions, there is no need to drain the piping within a couple of minutes. Therefore it is my opinion that a drain of 3/4" will be sufficient at all times. Even when there is an incident and the system will be activated at temperatures far below freezing point, a 3/4" drain will be sufficient to drain the piping in a relativly short time.

8.2.1.2 Deviation from approved plans shall require written permission by the design professional of the revised plans and approval by the authorityhaving jurisdiction.


The design professional is responsible for the overall plan. It is important that the design professional agree with changes being made to the plan. A good example is the design change that occurred to the skywalk in Kansas City that collapsed, with devastating effects. In that case, a change was made to the plan that the design professional was unaware. Written permission from the design professional is needed for verification.
