Genre Analysis

The genre I chose to use for this assignment was a public service announcement.

This genre is seen on television in forms of commercials or advertisements (bulletin

boards or signs) around the city or town. It is used to get a message across to a large

variety of people. For this assignment however I used a television PSA however a

bulletin board could work just the same. The genre is usually used to address an issue

such as world hunger or animal abuse. In this case my issue is obesity in America. The

genre is used to help raise awareness of the issue and to help get people to want to make a

change.

The writers of this genre need to be able to appeal to a large variety of people and

they must be able to get the message across on either a bulletin board or in a brief thirty

second commercial. Writers write the genre to express a need for a change and to

encourage people to make that change. They often use pathos and try to appeal to your

emotions in order to get you to make a donation or something of the sort. The people who

read it are the people who watch television so many people, especially in America. They

read it because if they want to get back to watching their favorite show they have to

watch the commercials first.
