PSYCHOMETRIC TESTING The what’s and how’s of preparing for psychometric testing By Ellie Kinahan Psychometric testing sounds scary, but it’s really not. Unlike a lot of other aspects of the clerkship application process, psychometric testing is one that you can prepare for and control. With so many facets to the application process, it would be a shame to have an outstanding application and flop in the psychometric testing stage. Not all firms use psychometric testing, and others use it in varying ways, but there’s a general theme to the testing. Essentially, psychometric testing gives firms a way in which to ‘objectively’ compare applicants. There are many components to the testing process, including numerical, verbal, logical and behavioural testing. Different companies will have different names for these categories or even sub-categories, but it all boils down to behaviour and logic. Perhaps the hardest aspect of psychometric testing though is the fact that it is (almost always) timed. A key skill that they are testing is your ability to succeed under time conditions – story of our life. This is the area in which preparation is key, and the sooner you start practising, the easier it will be during your clerkship application stage. All of the examples provided have been taken from practiseaptitudetests.com. They are a good example of the level of difficulty which you may need to be prepared for. Different firms will use different psychometric testing providers and do not openly share practise questions, so it is essentially impossible to know what you are up against. The purpose of this article is for you to become aware of the different themes of questions that may be asked and to help you to understand how to best prepare yourself for whatever test they give you. NUMERIC Through the various practise tests I have found, there appears to be two different categories of numeric testing. Whilst a range of basic mathematics skills is essential, the general theme of these tests is numeric reasoning and interpreting situations that deal with numbers. The
