Intense heat and humidity can also accelerate oil production. First, it is important to remember

that the hair produces no sebum,. People who complain of oily hair are actually

complaining of an oily scalp. The hair simply wicks the oil away from the scalp. Straighthair moves the oil quickly away from the scalp while tightly kinked hair moves the sebum

very slowly away from the scalp. This explains why Asian persons with very straight hair

note their hair is “oily” while African American persons more commonly note their hair isdry. (3)

.FACTORS

Several factors can be responsible, including,

• Hormonal fluctuations: In adult women, it may come with the menstrual cycle or using

birth control pills. In teens, it's just part of the ever-embarrassing teenaged experience -- oily

hair, zits, the works. When the hormones simmer down, the problem usually evens out.

• Bulking up: Excessive oil is a side effect of using androgenic hormones to increase body

mass. Androgen, a male hormone, can activate the sebaceous glands. Stress boosts

bloodstream levels of androgen in women as well as in men.

• Hair texture: Fine hair is often oilier than coarse hair because it takes up less room on

the scalp. This means people with fine hair are usually crowned with lots more of it than

people with coarse hair. And the more hair there is, the more oil because each follicle issupplied with two to three oil glands.

• Oily hair often linked to genetics: Many hair experts believe that the cause of greasy hair is

hereditary. Yes, it is believed to be genetic. The same hair experts do not believe that it's possible to retard the production of oil and grease delivered to the strands through changes in

diet. During puberty there is a significant marked change in sebum production due to higher

levels of hormones. This why teenagers may go through periods when their hair may becomemore greasy and need to be washed more often. Inadequate removal of the grease makes the

 problem worse. (4, 5)

York City and London. He is author of The Complete Hair Book (6).

TREATMENT OF OILY HAIR

First of all, use a special shampoo designed for greasy hair, or a very gentle one with a neutral pH. That way you can wash your hair as much as you want and as soon as you feel the need to,

without worrying about aggravating it.

Properties of an ideal shampoo: The ideal shampoo is always gentle in action, thorough in

dissolving the grime and at the same time, not harsh like a detergent shampoo.

MASSAGE OF HAIR: Massaging hair and scalp is important for the wellbeing as well as good

growth of the hair. For dry hair, scalp massaging with oil is recommended. For oily hair,

massage with toning lotion is suitable. A two minute brushing, stroking and combing routine is

sufficient massage exercise for the scalp.

Oily Hair Home Cure: shampoo cleanser recipe

1. Buy some shikakai powder from the market, some green grams and fenugreek (methi) seeds.

Mix two portions of shikakai powder, one portion of green gram flour and half portion of

Fenugreek powder and keep it in a jar. When required, mix a tablespoon of this mixture in thewhite of an egg and use it as a shampoo. It does not lather like a soap, or shampoo, but cleanses

the hair.

2. Take some dry soap nuts (reetha) and soak them in water overnight. Mash them in themorning and strain the soapy solution. Add a teaspoon of shikakai powder and wash your hair.

(7)

Oily Hair Home Remedy: a mint infusion recipe

If you are unable to make the shampoo cleanser at home, use this infusion recipe. Prepare it andmix it in the shampoo you use. To make the infusion, boil two handfuls of mint (pudina) in one-

and-a-half glass of water for 20 minutes. Strain the solution and mix in a 300 mL bottle of

shampoo.

Oily Hair Treatment: the toning lotion

Mix a tablespoon of Malt Vinegar in a glass of water. Add a pinch of salt in it. Dab two

tablespoons of it on your scalp and massage it with your finger tips twice a week. Leave thelotion on for one hour. Rinse with cool water, brush and set your hair.

The key to controlling greasy hair is to remove the sebum adequately from the scalp. Many

persons mistakenly think that hair shampoo is to wash the hair and not the scalp. Actually,

shampoo is designed to clean the scalp and beautify the hair. Thus, the first recommendation is to

6

Page 7: Prpject Re 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/prpject-re-1 7/32

shampoo the scalp. Women with long hair should apply the shampoo to the scalp without piling

the hair on top, and use their fingers to vigorously massage the scalp. (8)

HERBAL / HOMEOPATHIC AND NATURAL REMEDIES FOR OILY HAIR AND

SEBUM

• SAW PALMETTO EXTRACT

• SAW palmetto berry extract helps to balance hormones in boys and chaste tree berry(vitex) helps restore female balance. Seaweed (hizike, kelp, arame) is exceptionally high

in minerals and is considered one of the best foods for nourishing the endocrine glands.

•  HERBS: Herbs that can strengthen and cleanse the liver include burdock root dandelion

root, nettle leaf, oregon grape root, and yellow dock root. Herbs work gently and build

up in your system over time if allowed at least 3-4 weeks of consistent use.

• ROLE OF DIET: Studies suggest that people eating a Mediterranean diet, low in

animal fat (saturated fats) and high in olive oil have a lower risk of oily skin. Foods thatare important to add to the diet are fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly those rich in

vitamin A carotene - dark green leafy vegetables, and yellow-orange vegetables and fruits

(apricots, mangoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, yams and squash). Cod liver oil is important

and also contains a lot of vitamin A.

• WATER: It’s also beneficial to drink plenty of purified water (up to 4 quarts of water a

day) to flush out toxins and transport nutrients.

Cedarwood, Virginian ( Juniperus virginiana)

Properties: The two types of cedarwood (Atlas and Virginian) are antiseptic, astringent,

diuretic, sedative (to nervous system) and tonic (to circulatory system).

Usage: It's good for massage, if added to bathwater or a vaporiser/ burner, steam

inhalation; it will affect eczema, oily skin and acne, coughs, bronchitis, catarrh, cystitis,

stress and tension, hair loss and dandruff.

Clary sage ( Salvia sclarea)

Properties: Anti-depressant and soothing, which makes it ideal in treating stress-relateddisorders and depression. Also antiseptic, antibacterial, astringent, deodorant, digestive

and an aphrodisiac. Good for Hair loss, dandruff and oily scalp. (9)

The PHYTO Solution

To help combat oily scalp problems, PHYTO offers products targeting several differentfactors. Minimizing the size of pores in order to reduce sebum production with astringent

plant decoctions (Nettle, Tormentil, Comfrey, Burdock, etc.). Slowing down sebum

migration along the hair shaft by coating it with an amino acid (Lysine) andhelping regulate sebaceous glands with essential oils and sulfur-rich compounds.

7

Page 8: Prpject Re 1

8/8/2019 Prpject Re 1

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/prpject-re-1 8/32

All PHYTO shampoos contain a mild washing base (Saponaria and Panama Bark

decoction) intended to prevent excess stimulation of the sebaceous glands. To optimize

the action of PHYTO products, avoid excessively energetic massaging, scorching hotwater or violent blow-drying. Remember to use only mild products that will not cause

further reactive secretions. (10)

DEFINITION

Hair that develops a lank, flat, stringy or oily appearance, due to overproduction of sebum by

sebaceous glands, is often referred as "greasy" hair. This type of hair is hard to control, clumpstogether easily and does not hold a style well.

9

Page 10: Prpject Re 1

CHARACTRISTICS OF OILY HAIR

Greasy hair is directly related to the overproduction of sebum, a waxy type of substance naturally

occurring in the body which is designed to keep hair soft and waterproof. Sebum is produced by

the sebaceous glands. The amount of greasiness that is experienced is directly tied to the amountof oil present on the scalp.

2. Amla: It strengthens the hair and increases hair length by increasing blood

circulation.

3. Sikakai: it increases the production of melanin pigment which is responsible for hair color. It is also known for cleansing properties that combats the build up of

sebum on scalp.

4. Aloe Vera: It blocks the sebaceous gland pores and reduce sebum productionthus helping to reduce oil content in hair. It also balances the pH value and

eczema of scalp and has a moisturizing effect.

5. Olive oil: It with other active ingredients hydrates the hair root and giveselasticity and shine to hair and rejuvenates the hair.

6. Vinegar (acetic acid): Since acetic acid is naturally acidic so it will cut through

the oil and reduces the oil content in scalp.

•   Not only will it remove all grime, pollution, excess oil and dirt from the hair, it

conditions it at the same time.

health of your hair.

• Hair has more body, bounce and shine when using it.

• Prevents and sorts scalp problems such as dandruff etc.

• Hair will be more manageable and easy to style.
