Dear Friends,

When I reflect back on the amazing year Cookie Cart had in 2015, and the accomplishments of the teens who completed over 35,000 hours of employment and classroom training, partnerships come into focus as a significant contributing factor for success.

Our partners played a critical role in making sure that young people from low-income communities in the Twin Cities have a safe, youth-centered space to gain essential job readiness and life skills.

For a teenager, a successful first job experience can mean the difference between moving forward on a viable career path or being pulled into a negative life on the streets. That dichotomy was eloquently described by Damarean, a 16-year-old Cookie Cart youth participant. He represented us when Julián Castro, United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, toured North Minneapolis in August. Damarean told a reporter with the StarTribune about the limited options for teens in our neighborhood and where he would be without his job at Cookie Cart.

Our partners are vital to giving Damarean, and the 200 other teens at Cookie Cart, an alternative to the streets. Here are just a few ways that partnerships strengthen our programming:

We are able to invest 100% of our cookie sales back into our youth employment program because of in-kind ingredient donations from companies including United Sugars, JR Watkins, Land O’Lakes, Michael Foods, Cargill, and Ardent Mills.

Dairy Queen, General Mills, TCF, Xcel Energy, and many others hosted Cookie Cart teens at 184 community events, sales events, and workplace tours.

Employee volunteer groups, including Citizens Bank, Comcast, and Wells Fargo, worked side-by-side with teens scooping cookies, assisting in preparing resumes, and practicing interview skills.

We are deeply touched by the generous support of business and community groups year after year. And we are especially excited about the new partnerships we are building to achieve our expansion into St. Paul. Xcel Energy, Sunrise Banks, Kemps, and Johnson High School have already stepped up to support the vision of bringing Cookie Cart programming to the East Metro.

Bakery Program:

The first stop for Cookie Cart teen employees, and the very foundation of our youth employment training, is the Bakery Program. In this hands-on job training, we teach the fundamentals of job readiness to equip every teen with skills in responsibility, collaboration, and initiative.

In 2015, 193 teens mastered basic job skills in

the bakery.

Customer Service Training:

After learning the ins and outs of the bakery, it’s time for our employees to learn the concepts and skills required to provide exceptional customer service. At the core of this training is an exploration of interpersonal communication. Teens who complete this training are eligible to begin practicing these new skills at Cookie Cart’s front counter as well as at local promotional events.

360° Program:

As teens begin to transition into the mainstream workforce, this advanced work readiness program gives teens the opportunity to meet with adult staff to identify areas of potential interest for future jobs. We equip teens for work after Cookie Cart by teaching resume and cover letter writing, job search tools, and interviewing skills.

Classroom and Credential Learning Financial Literacy Training:

Cookie Cart has developed hands-on curriculum to provide valuable life skills training to teens who have the new responsibility of a paycheck. This, along with other financial decisions, makes teaching the basic concepts of personal financial management so important. In partnership with area financial institutions, workshops cover the essential building blocks of personal finance: budgeting & saving, checking accounts, and personal credit. In 2015,

84 teens completed Financial Literacy Training.

National Career Readiness Certificates:

At Cookie Cart, we are proud to offer teens the chance to take the National Career Readiness Certification (NCRC) exam. This is an assessment and certification issued by ACT and shows prospective employers that a teen has the foundational skills necessary to be successful in the workplace. The test measures skills employers have identified as essential to job success, including applied math, reading for information, and locating information. In 2015,

34 teens earned NCRC certification.

ServSafe Food Handler Certification:

Cookie Cart began offering ServSafe as a certification option in 2015 thanks to our community partner at Pillsbury Community’s Waite House. The certification meets standards set by the Minnesota Department of Health and shows prospective employers in the restaurant industry that youth staff have received food safety training in the areas of personal hygiene, allergens, time & temperature control, cross-contamination, and cleaning & sanitation. In 2015,

19 teens earned ServSafe Food Handler Certification.

Saint Paul Expansion Working cooperatively with Eastside neighborhood leaders, schools, and businesses, in 2015, Cookie Cart began to

put into motion plans to offer Saint Paul teens the opportunity to learn the skills they need to better prepare for

their futures. In June, Cookie Cart purchased a vacant grocery store at 946 Payne Avenue. The vision is to renovate

the building to include classroom space, a commercial bakery, a store front café, and offices. Once completed this

empty building will be converted into an economic hub dedicated to building self-sufficiency skills in 100

neighborhood teens annually.

To make these plans a reality, in November, Cookie Cart launched a $3.2 million fundraising campaign. Leadership

gifts are building momentum to ensure that the goal of creating a safe, youth-centered place where Saint Paul teens

can build better lives becomes a reality.

Cookie Sales Growth

Dear friends of Cookie Cart,

This past year, Cookie Cart fulfilled our promise to the community of North Minneapolis by doubling the number of teens enrolled in our employment, life and leadership skills programming.

The journey began five years ago in response to a growing waitlist of young people looking for the chance at a first job and the skills experience necessary for a successful career after high school.

Achievement of that goal required a strategic investment in our building on West Broadway. With the renovation completed, our storefront café and bakery are not only a place of learning, but also a community gathering place where youth, community leaders, elected officials and neighbors can gather over a cup of coffee and cookie. A place where dreams are defined and future paths are set.

In 2015 the board, staff, youth participants, and community partners began to frame the next five years at Cookie Cart. Together we reaffirmed our mission to provide teens with lasting and meaningful work, life and leadership skills through experience and training in an urban nonprofit bakery.

Then, working cooperatively with neighborhood leaders in Saint Paul, we crafted a plan to provide teens from Saint Paul’s Payne-Phalen neighborhood a safe, youth-centered space to obtain essential job readiness and life skills.

In July, we purchased a vacant building at 946 Payne Avenue. We look forward to sharing with you as our Saint Paul space evolves into a safe, nurturing place for teens to gather, work and attend classes.

Thank you for partnering with us. Your support and belief in empowering teens has made our North Minneapolis programming a success and enabled us to take the first step to establishing Cookie Cart Saint Paul. Together we will bake brighter futures across the Twin Cities.
