Annual Report 2014-15 1

Dear friends,

It is my pleasure to present to you the Annual Report for the 2014-15 academic year. Providence Cristo Rey High school continues to implement and improve upon a number of initiatives and programs that we believe will continue to allow us to achieve our ultimate goal of providing our students with the best opportunity for success in their quest to attend and graduate from college. It was especially gratifying to see the fruits of our labors realized this past May as many of PCRHS’s first full graduating class of 2011 graduated from college, ready to make their mark in this world. Those students graduated from an impressive array of colleges and universities including, but not limited to: St. Mary of the Woods, Indiana University, IUPUI, Wabash College, Georgetown University, Franklin College, University of Indianapolis, and Indiana State University. Some are going on to graduate school, while others will be entering the work world, some at companies they worked at during their participation in Providence Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study program. I want to commend our faculty and staff for their dedication, hard work and willingness to do whatever is necessary to ensure our students’ success in all of their endeavors.

While there have been many accomplishments too numerous to mention, below are just a few of the successes we have achieved over the years:

• 100% of our seniors since our inception (including the class of 2015) have been accepted to colleges throughout the country.

• Since 2010, our inaugural graduating class, we have been tracking our graduates, and over 70% of them have either graduated or are still persisting to earn their college degree. We are very proud that our graduates surpass the national average of 46% students graduating from college in five years, per 2014 ACT database reports. This achievement far exceeds the Indiana “on time” college graduation rate of 9% for low-income students.

• As the student population has tripled since the 2010-11 school year to 238 for this 2015-16 academic year, we have also increased our Corporate Work Study partnerships from 23 to 90 over the same period while strengthening our efforts to make the corporate internship experience even more productive and meaningful for both our students and for our corporate partners.

These successes are the direct result of the unwavering commitment, dedication and support of all of you, our stakeholders, who have never wavered in your belief that Providence Cristo Rey could deliver on the promise of providing a college prep education to those students most in need. Without your ongoing generosity and steadfast support, none of these accomplishments would have been possible. It is a direct result of your generous support and your belief in our program that has allowed us to complete our mission of providing our students with the education, personal development, and tools for success enabling them to reach their full potential.

On behalf of the entire Providence Cristo Rey family, I want to thank you again for your past help and again encourage your continued support of Providence Cristo Rey High School.

Sincerely,

Joseph P. HeidtPresident

Jaylan Anderson transferred to Providence Cristo Rey his sophomore year of high school. The main reason: To hone his leadership skills. One of the ways he developed those skills was becoming student body president. Recently, Jaylan returned to Providence Cristo Rey speaking to students not as a student body

president, but as an employee of Defenders, the company he worked for during his high school career. Shortly after graduation, Jaylan was hired by the Corporate Work Study Partner company—working full time while pursuing a college degree.

“One of the best parts of my Corporate Work Study experience was making connections and networking. My supervisor backs me 100 % to attend college and obtain my degree.”

While he focuses on a major in information technology, Jaylan already has his sights set on an advanced degree in cyber security.

“I can’t say enough about the Corporate Work Study experience,” said Jaylan. “It allowed me to figure out what I wanted to do with my life and prepared me for a professional environment. Think about it: When you put that company name on your resume, you already have an edge.”

Damoria Martin transferred to Providence Cristo Rey her freshman year with her eye on learning as much as she could from the corporate world. She earned more than 750 hours of work experience with Eli Lilly and Company. She says that experience helped prepare her for life after high school.

“Not only was I accepted to college, my employer gave me a great reference and I feel like I’m more prepared to take the next steps of my life with college and career,” said Damoria, a freshman at Ball State University, where she is studying business.

While a student at Providence Cristo Rey, Damoria earned spots at the Summer Junior Executive Institute and the Holland Summer Enrichment Program in Biology. She graduated with an Academic Honors Diploma and completed college courses in communications, composition and business at IUPUI and Marian University. Damoria was also active in Providence Cristo Rey team sports including softball, volleyball and cheerleading.

As an upperclassman she was nominated as a delegate for the Lilly Endowment Community Scholar and the Lugar Scholarship. She was admitted to a dozen colleges and universities and awarded more than $80,000 in annual scholarships.

Brittnee Vaughn was one of the first students to enroll in Providence Cristo Rey High School in 2007. She credits her Corporate Work Study experience with leading her to her chosen career path—criminal justice. During her four years at Providence Cristo Rey she worked at AIT Laboratories, Eli Lilly and Company, and Roche Diagnostics. After graduation, she studied Criminal Justice at IUPUI. After completing her degree she was offered a job with the Marion County Coroner’s Office—exactly where she had hoped to land.

“I was introduced to criminal law as a freshman in high school and I knew if I stayed in that field I could be involved in making changes. My hope is that I can help people who come out of the prison system make positive transformations. They just need to find the right resources to move ahead.”

School Scholarship Tax CreditGreat News for Providence Cristo Rey High School Donors

A School Scholarship Tax Credit is now available for individuals or corporations who donate to scholarship granting organizations (SGOs) for the purpose of supporting Providence Cristo Rey’s students through funding scholarships, grants and financial aid.

The tax credit is equal to 50% of the amount donated and is used to reduce your Indiana state income tax liability. In addition to the direct state tax reduction, you also receive a federal tax deduction for your contribution1. The following table illustrates an individual’s after tax (state and federal) cost of a donation assuming a 30% federal income tax bracket:

Learn more or make a gift by visiting www.pcrhs.org and clicking on the “Support PCRHS” link.

Donation Amount State Tax Credit Deduction1 Savings 30% Total Tax Savings After Tax Cost 2

$5,000 $2,500 $2,500 $750 $3,250 $1,750

The Indiana credit cannot be carried back to prior years but can be carried forward for nine years. Consult your tax advisor to verify your ability to utilize the state tax credit and federal tax deduction.

Payment must be made via cash, check, credit or debit card directly to The Institute for Quality Education SGO. Funds received by The Institute for Quality Education SGO from PCRHS donors will be designated for scholarships to PCRHS students.

1 The net federal deduction is equal to the contribution less the state tax credit as state taxes are deductable for federal income tax purposes.2 Actual after tax cost will vary based on your individual income tax status.

Over 70% of PCRHS graduates have either graduated from college or are still persisting to obtain their degree. (based on data through April 2015)

The ACT database reports the national average of college students graduating in five years is 46%.
