From Melanie & Jennifer

AWARE. INFORMED. CONFIDENT. EMPOWERED. These are the words of nurses,

social workers and counselors talking about the role

they now play in helping women access abortion. In

2014 Provide trained over 800 front line providers

throughout the Southeastern United States – most

of whom had never talked about abortion with their

patients and clients – to be powerful resources for

women, exactly where their support is needed most.

The harsh reality is that abortion restrictions continue

to pass at unprecedented rates, making abortion care

increasingly hard for the average woman to locate

and access. This situation is even harder for women

who live in communities where health care in general

is hard to obtain; for women who may be homeless,

victims of domestic violence, and struggling with

substance abuse or other health issues; or for women

who simply lack supportive friends and family

when it comes to abortion. Women deserve accurate,

judgment free medical care and we are helping

our health and social service system provide it:

opening up conversations about abortion, correcting

misinformation, and giving providers the tools to

counsel and refer women even if they are personally

opposed to abortion. The willingness and ability of

these providers to be a resource to women seeking

abortion is a bright spot in abortion access.

Abortion access in the Southeast is in urgent need

of intervention; now is the time to invest in abortion

referral-making, an innovative strategy that works.

We hope you will join us in addressing this critical,

but for many years overlooked, component of access

and in building a community in which everyone

plays a role.

“I AM CHRISTIAN AND I AM PRO-LIFE. WHEN I HEARD THIS TRAINING HAD

INFORMATION ABOUT ABORTION I WAS A BIT SURPRISED AND

UNPREPARED. BUT BECAUSE OF THE PROFESSIONALISM AND IN-DEPTH TRAINING THESE PEOPLE

PROVIDED, I WALKED OUT FEELING LIKE I COULD ASSIST SOMEONE MORE HOLISTICALLY, INSTEAD OF DISCOURAGING THEM. IT

MADE A CHANGE IN ME, AND IT IS SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE OF THE TRAINING THAT I NOW BELIEVE I

CAN BE A BETTER RESOURCE TO THE COMMUNITY.”

~ Sarah, South Carolina rural public health nurse, who requested that the incentive for participating in our evaluation survey, a $25 gift card, be donated back to Provide.

Theory of Change

Provide trains individual health care and social service workers about abortion.

Together, these institutions can change the lives of the women who come to them and change the systems to which they belong. Those systems can change the culture to one where abortion is a part of women’s health care that every provider has the ability to help with.

These individual providers take their knowledge and willingness to provide abortion-related care back to their institutions, where their knowledge supports many other health professionals.

These institutions touch the lives of hundreds and thousands of women of reproductive age who may need abortion services.

Where We Work

We work where health care choices are limited, difficult to locate and financially

impossible for many people. Widespread stigma,

organized opposition, and a shortage of providers

make meeting patient and client needs especially

difficult regarding abortion.

Our vision is grounded in the belief that all

women should have access to safe abortion care,

regardless of where they live. We go right to the

toughest places, rural communities and Southern

states, to build infrastructure and support abortion

care for the people in these places.

Referrals

One in three women will have an abortion in their lifetime, yet many health and social service

providers are unequipped to

support their patients and clients

around abortion care. Our referrals

program trains providers to give

accurate, caring abortion referrals.

Project sites leave our program

with a better understanding of

abortion care and the women who

seek it, a commitment to providing

abortion referrals to women who

need them, and the skills and

resources to address the abortion-

related needs of their clients.

As clinics close and abortion

becomes harder to locate and

access, health and social service

providers play an increasingly

important role in ensuring our

systems can meet women’s

needs. Abortion referrals are an

achievable step toward a stronger

system of care. Our referrals

project works to eliminate barriers

caused by stigma, organized

opposition, and lack of basic

education and resources on

abortion. We reach beyond the

labels “pro-choice” and “pro-life”

to help providers exercise their

professional commitment to caring

for women and respecting their

patients’ essential autonomy.

Abortion can be addressed as

an integrated part of women’s

care, even, and especially, where

this inclusion is most needed.

Together, we are creating a

network of providers across

primary care, family planning,

and specialized services for

substance abuse, domestic

violence, and mental health, who

are trained and willing to support

women to access abortion – safely,

with dignity, and for all.

“Everybody is now on the inside,

everyone knows how to do things,

everyone has a common language to

deal with it and a frame of reference…

Before the training we felt like if we got

caught making a referral we’d be in

big trouble. This sanitized the process

and now when we help patients we feel a lot better.”

Impact

Over 800 health care providers have been trained to do abortion referrals for their patients and clients and

there are tens of thousands of women in referrals trained systems of care. This curriculum is now available

online for free.

Our Referrals Trainings:

» Increased the percentage of providers who feel they have the skills and information they need to effectively refer a client.

» Increased provider knowledge of the safety of abortion.

» Increased provider intention to present all options without judgment or bias.

» Increased intention to provide a referral for abortion.

Quotes from satisfied participants include:

“I have trouble with just the whole

topic of abortion. It’s not something

I’m fond of or agree with. But the

trainer presented it in a way where I realized it’s not my body and,

in the position I’m in, I have to be

sensitive to my clients’ needs.”

Nursing

Many nurses do not have access to education on

unintended pregnancy and abortion care, especially

nurses living in states where abortion is highly

stigmatized. This severely reduces our health care

system’s ability to respond to the needs of thousands

of pregnant women. It leads to staff shortages at

family planning and abortion clinics and can prevent

hospitals from being able to provide abortion care.

Provide, and the Provide-based ROE Consortium

for Nursing, has been working on integrating

unintended pregnancy care into nursing education

and practice for 12 years. Our current focus is on

a newly developed competency-based curriculum,

rolling out next year, and on developing nursing

leaders in Southern states.

Essential Competencies in Unintended Pregnancy

Prevention and Care for Nursing Education

(Hewitt, C., and Cappiello, J., 2015) presents 27

core competencies as a framework for curricular

development in nursing education and will be

available on our website in 2015. In 2014, Provide

offered an online Resource Guide based on these

competencies with tools, articles, presentations,

workbooks, and sample materials for faculty to

incorporate into their curricula, for nursing students

to further their education, and to improve clinical

services for women experiencing unintended

pregnancy.

By developing the expectation that all nurses must

be competent in caring for unintended pregnancy,

and by creating curriculum resources that build

that competency, we are working towards a future

where no nurse is unprepared to care for unintended

pregnancy. Towards a future in which all nurses

feel competent, supported and able. And towards a

future where women are supported by the health care

providers they trust, in whatever decisions they make.

“I was impressed by Provide’s intelligent,

focused and proactive approach to its

mission. As a woman dedicated to helping

women who didn’t have the advantages I

had, I’m proud to be a part of Provide.”

“THE PEOPLE I TALK TO WANT THIS INFORMATION, AND THE ACTIVISTS AND ADVOCATES

I KNOW ARE EXHAUSTED, DISCOURAGED, AND MIRED IN THE LEGISLATIVE PROCESS. I

SEE THE IMPACT THAT PROVIDE’S PRESENCE HAS IN OKLAHOMA WAY BEFORE WE GET INTO A

TRAINING ROOM. THE IDEA THAT ANYONE IS THINKING OR TALKING

ABOUT ACCESS TO ABORTION WITH HEALTH AND SOCIAL PROVIDERS IS A MASSIVELY

HOPEFUL ONE.”~ Karolyn Chowning, Provide Oklahoma State Coordinator in her note accompanying her

annual donation. Provide is fortunate to have 100% staff giving two years in a row.

Why is individual support so critical?

Even if you’re not a social worker, or a clinician, or

an organizer, or living in one of our project states,

or even if you are, we know EVERYONE has a role

to play in making abortion accessible.

Thanks to the generosity and commitment of all

of our individual donors, Provide has been able to

expand our state teams and reach hundreds more

people with resources on how to address abortion

We have many anonymous donors. Our list reflects our commitment to not print a donor’s name without express permission to do so. If you do not see your name on this list and would like to be publicly acknowledged, please contact [email protected].

in their settings. This impact not only changes day-to-

day client/patient/clinician interaction in our states,

but begins to turn the tide of stigma around abortion.

Together we carry forward the radical idea that people

who are ambivalent or even oppose abortion will still

act to support women who need it and that this action

will make abortion feel more understandable, more

normal, less stigmatized and ultimately, accessible.

“I GIVE TO PROVIDE BECAUSE THEY ARE WORKING TO EXPAND AND SECURE ABORTION ACCESS

IN SOME OF THE COUNTRY’S GREATEST AREAS OF NEED. IN THE PROCESS THEY ARE

MEETING PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE — EXPANDING IMPORTANT

CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ABORTION AS A CRITICAL PART

OF COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH CARE AND AS A PILLAR OF SOCIAL

AND ECONOMIC WELLBEING.” ~ Monthly Sustainer, Andrea Flynn, Roosevelt Institute Fellow

Vision

Provide works to make sure that women have access

to abortion, especially those living in low-resource

rural and Southern communities. Provide empowers

and educates health and social service providers to

be able to give the care and support women facing

unintended pregnancy need. Our work is rooted in

the on-the-ground realities of women’s lives and of

the systems and resources that are available to them.

It is guided by our conviction that everyone has a role

to play in supporting women’s access to abortion.

We believe accessible abortion is one of the essential

components of women’s dignity, autonomy and

well-being. By empowering health and social service

providers to respond to women’s needs in a way that

is rooted in patient and client-centered care, instead

of abortion’s moral and political controversies, we can

help normalize abortion, generate empathy, and build

capacity where it is most needed.
