Principal’s Note
Hello and welcome to all our students and families. Another productive week of learning has passed and we are about to enter week 7 – where has the time gone? You may have no-ticed our sign “All students are welcome.” Every student suc-ceeding is the shared vision of Queensland state schools. This strategy underpins regional and school planning to ensure every student receives the support needed to belong to the school community, engage purposefully in learning and experi-ence academic success. To achieve this it is important that as a community and school we work together, communicate bet-ter with each other, develop and review our practice and per-formance. Starting on Monday 28 May, Miss Jasmine Hunt will be com-mencing her four week Internship with Mr Robinson. Miss Hunt is currently in her fourth year studying a Bachelor of Edu-cation. Feel free to introduce yourself to her to next week. Welcome to Surat Miss Hunt! A massive thank you to the Surat High school staff for the awesome 80’s Trivia night last Saturday – it was definitely a blast from the past. Thank you again to our community who came along to support this event. Our 5/6 class had a great morning out on Thursday, visiting the Surat Council Chambers as part of their learning on the judicial system and this Tuesday our 1/2 class are having a visit from our local fire brigade team to test our their fire safety skills. I love to see our students engaged in the local commu-nity. We do have a few spaces available in our School Instrumental program – if your child is in grade 4 or above and interested in joining our Instrumental program and school band, you can grab a selection form from the school office. Don’t forget that this coming Friday is our Jump Rope for Heart event. I have been practising my speed rope skills, which admittedly are not so fast anymore…but it’s the effort that matters. Keep jumping! Attendance
Being at school every day counts, with one day absent each
week quickly adding up to two months of missed lessons in a
year. Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will
be at school learning every day of the school year. The 2018
School Attendance Target is 95%.
Week 5 Attendance Data: Prep – 96.67%, Yr 1/2 – 97.14%, Yr
3 – 98.67%, Yr 4/5 – 93.33%. Yr 5/6 – 95.00%, Yr 7-10 –
95.00%.
Highest attendance for Week 5: Year 3 98.67% - Congratu-
lations!
Remember, “The Surat State School way is to commit
to our learning, strive for excellence and succeed in
all that we do.”
Enjoy the weekend!

Premiers Reading Challenge
The Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC) is an annual state-wide initiative for state and non-state schools for students up to Year 9. The challenge is not a competition but aims to improve litera-cy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and learn-ing. Surat State School are strong believers of reading, so we have taken this opportunity to help students remain enthusiastic about reading. Reading is vitally important for developing vocab-ulary and knowledge, improves spelling and comprehension and can improve confidence. Premiers Reading Challenge will be commencing this Monday the 14th of May. More information will be provided to students and parents shortly, so please keep a look out for it coming home!
