Final preparation expedition for the Ten Tors event 2015 which takes place in two weeks Our team passed their scrutineering checks on Thursday afternoon, and headed down to Okehampton on Friday evening to prepare themselves for a 'mock' event of 33 miles, carrying ALL required equipment and following all the rules of the event itself. Dartmoor greeted us with its usual blend of drizzle and wind, and the students quickly set up their camp, sheltered only by some nearby woodland and the odd stray sheep. At 0730 on Saturday morning the students set off onto the moor, weighed down with their tents, stoves, spare clothes, first aid kits, water supplies and a weekends worth of food. The sun emerged and bathed the tussock-laden hills in beautiful spring sunshine. The skylarks and cuckoos competing to be heard above the vibrant yellow gorse. Dartmoor in all its splendour! Unfortunately calamity befell one of our students who was forced to retire hurt, but the others used their map and compass to navigate through the middle of Dartmoor, several miles from any roads, buildings or civilisation. The weather then turned and they began to face heavy rain and poor visibility again. Morale dropped and the lively bounce of the morning was replaced with a weary trudge. They battled on, finally arriving at camp at 2000 hours, having hiked for about 13 hours and covered about 19 miles over some of the UK's toughest terrain. They set up camp next to a nearby stream, quickly ate their food and collapsed into their sleeping bags. Sunday was shorter but the cold, fog and rain again posed challenges, a few students went knee deep in bogs, and river crossings led to wet cold feet, but again all problems were dealt with by all 7 students and they crossed the 'finish-line' with plenty of energy to spare. This weekend has filled me with confidence that this team will be able to complete the event in two weeks’ time. Well done all! As always, this couldn't happen without our dedicated team of supervisors, so a huge thank you to Iain Richards, Matt Wheeler, Montse Ayrorro Tunun, Ms Loader, Mr Pitman and Mr White. A big thank you to the Clarendon team as well for helping to keep our morale up! A shout out to our sponsors as always who contributed towards our equipment - Medequip, Westbury County Council, Appetito, Karl Martin Ltd and The John of Gaunt School.

News from the English Faculty Year 11 Nearly there! Your Mock exams have been great practice for the real thing on 2nd June. Your results may not have been a true indication of what you are really capable of so now is the time to demonstrate your real potential. Show your English teacher how hard you are willing to work in order to achieve that C or B or A… Don’t forget to keep reading your novel (‘Of Mice and Men’ or ‘Mockingbird’ or ‘Mister Pip’) and your short stories and the poetry. You should all now have a lovely revision timetable on your bedroom wall! Little and often is the key – don’t leave it too late! Read a newspaper – rip out some articles and highlight 3 interesting bits of language used by the writer – PLEASE try to do this ONCE A DAY … it only takes 5 minutes. Some important news for Year 10: You will have started looking at newspapers, magazines, travel writing, biographies and advertising this term. A great habit to get into is reading a newspaper regularly – it doesn’t really matter what type of newspaper it is (anything from The Sunday Times to The Wiltshire Times will do), but make sure that you do read some of the articles. Alternatively, make bbc.co.uk your homepage and regularly read some of those articles. This will help out loads for the English Language exam next year! (AND the forthcoming Mock) And well done to those of you who’ve worked really hard all the way through Year 10. Please keep this up during Term 6 and into next year. Mr Davis and the rest of the English Faculty

On Friday 17th April, 4 lucky year 9 students got the

chance to participate in the Erasmus + German

exchange.

The students were greeted at Hamburg airport by their German hosts and taken off to their homes for the week.

During the week, the girls got to experience German food, learn some German words and participate in activities at the school. They also got to mix with students from the other countries involved with the scheme - Italians, Turkish, Portuguese and French students from Martinique. Many new friendships were made, and it was fantastic to see the girls grow in confidence throughout the week. There is more information to come from the girls and their experience, but in the meantime, please do check the Erasmus + notice board in the canteen, and get involved in the club on a Thursday pm in C10 if you are interested in joining!!!' Year 9 Business Studies Students

Year 9 Business Students have been working on a

‘Retail and Visual Merchandising’ project for the

past term.

Students were set the task of producing an Easter themed window

display for a retail outlet of their choice in Trowbridge town. Over the

course of the project the students learnt about the different sectors in

retail, went into town to carry out some primary research on current

displays and advertising and had a really informative talk from Mrs

Bessant who was talented Visual Merchandiser for H&M previous to

working here.

All of this, combined with a long idea analysis lead them choosing one

display to make. Once the projects have been marked, winning

portfolios and displays will be awarded with prizes! The students all

worked incredibly hard and showed great team working skills when

working together to assemble the displays. A huge well done from me

and a massive thank you to Kate for the help and time that she gave

us.

Congratulations to Robin Peters (Yr7) who was part of the Bath

Buccaneers U12 Hockey Team which secured victory at the Area

Tournament held on Sunday April 26th at Bath University. After

playing matches in their section his team won through to the Cup

Final. The final was a close run event with the match ending in a draw.

Bath Buccs secured victory with a successful penalty shoot-out.

Robin was a regular member of the school Hockey Club on a

Wednesday evening throughout terms 1 - 4 and was a valuable

member of the Year 7 team.

ATHLETICS

John of Gaunt are gearing up to eclipse their achievements at Bath

University 2014. We look forward to welcoming new and experienced

athletes alike at Athletics Club because it is open to ALL years so get

Wednesday 3-4pm in your planners and get running / jumping /

throwing...........

There is an active Athletics Club on a Wednesday evening 3-4pm

where students can practise a wide range of events from High Jump to

100m or from 1500m to Javelin. Several members of PE staff are

scheduled for the practice which enables us to offer such variety

whilst maintaining appropriate safety regulations. Year 7's will be able

to experience new events and to learn from the experience of

students from year 8 upwards. There is an opportunity to represent

the school, West Wiltshire and Wiltshire on our grass track and on the

all-weather tracks in Salisbury and Bath. The finale to the season is our

very own sports day.

Welfare Concerns If you have any concerns about your child, from the very small to more significant ones, The John of Gaunt

School has someone in place to help and support you and your child. For most minor issues the first person to

contact is your child’s tutor. They see your child every day and can deal will issues that arise from time to time

such as minor friendship issues or worries about school work or homework. The email for your child’s tutor and

house leader is in their planner.

For more serious welfare concerns we have a very experienced pastoral team including a Student Liaison

Officer and a Pastoral Support Manager linked to each House. Helen Kerr is the Assistant head Teacher who

has overall responsibility for Welfare and child protection and she heads up these teams and works with the

House leaders and their teams to ensure that all students are supported and cared for during their time at The

John of Gaunt School. All of these people are available to be contacted via the telephone or via email – see

below. Please do not hesitate to let us know if there is anything you are concerned about.
