ASEAN ccTLDs (country code TLDs)
14 November 2013 11
Country Most popular ccTLDs Price Example (yearly registration)
Brunei .com.bn €261
Cambodia .com.kh €187
Indonesia .co.id €149
Laos .la €75
Malaysia .com.my and .my €112
Myanmar .com.mm €75
Philippines .com.ph and .ph €90
Singapore .com.sg, .sg, .DYuB~ªƫ and .ᯠඑ €149
Thailand .co.th €112
Vietnam .com.vn and .vn €149
.com.(ccTLD) and .(ccTLD) Registrations • Most registries started by offering their domain extension in the form of
.com.(ccTLD). Examples: .com.vn, .com.sg, com.my
• Later on, registries started to open up for .(ccTLD) registrations, in many cases at a premium price.
• So, .com.(ccTLD) is often the first choice for an internet user, when looking for a company online.
• It is important to register both variants (.com.vn and .vn) to avoid confusion.

Overview: Southeast Asia and the Internet Number of “netizens” tripled in the past 10 years.

Question: Have you experienced problems with ? (Can select
multiple answers)
A. Cybersquatting (Bad-faith registration)
B. False affiliation (Criminals presenting themselves as authorised resellers)
C. Phishing (Fraudulent e-mails containing fake links) D. Typosquatting (Registering similar or mistyped domain names) E. Slamming (Registrars that contact you claiming someone else has
requested the registration of domain names identical to yours)
Poll 1
Cybersquatting
• When a third party registers domain names that are identical to your company’s product or trade mark names, with the purpose of selling the domain names back to you (the rightful owner) at a premium price.
• Highest risk of cybersquatting is on the unrestricted ccTLDs (.com.vn, .vn, .com.ph, .ph, .la)
14 November 2013 15
vodafone.su vodafone.ru.com vodafone.kiwi.nz vodafone.eu.com vodafone.com.ng
9,999 GBP 7,799 USD 5,999 USD 10,000 GBP Make Offer
False Affiliation
• Criminals presenting themselves as authorised resellers.
• Examples: – Website using an identical or similar domain name to your brand, copying
your company’s logo and design, and using it to generate pay-per-click fees. – Unauthorised resellers or resellers of counterfeit goods using your company’s
logo and design to attract business to themselves.
14 November 2013 16
Phishing
• Attempting to acquire credit card information, usernames, and a password via electronic communication (fraudulent e-mails containing fake links). The term ‘phishing’ is a mix of ‘password’ and ‘fishing’.

Typosquatting
• When a third party registers domain names that are either visually similar to your domain name or are mistyped (one key off on the keyboard).
Example: If Europe.eu is the domain name, europ.eu could be the typosquatted domain (visually similar); or if Europe.eu is the domain name, Euripe.eu could be the variant (the letter ‘i’ is next to the letter ‘o’ on the keyboard, making this a common typo). Omitting or doubling characters are also characteristics of typosquatting.
14 November 2013 18
Traffic Diversion
• Traffic diversion means using a typosquatted domain name to redirect the traffic intended for your website.
Example: When typing www.crysler.co.uk/ (typo of Chrysler) we are redirected to www.motormouse.co.uk/

mark in which the complainant has rights; 2. The registrant does not have any rights or legitimate interests in the domain
name; and 3. The registrant registered the domain name and is using it in ‘bad-faith’.
