The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 is the primarypiece of legislation covering occupational health and safety inthe UK. It requires organisations to provide the necessaryinformation, instruction, training and supervision to ensure, sofar as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety at work ofyour employees.

This is expanded by the Management of Health and Safety atWork Regulations 1999, which identify situations wherehealth and safety training is particularly important (e.g. whenpeople start work, on exposure to new or increased risks andwhere existing skills may have become rusty or need updating).

In addition to the above, there are numerous other regulationsrelating to a wide range of issues in the workplace which couldaffect you, such as

• Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER)

• Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992

• Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981

• The Health and Safety Information for EmployeesRegulations 1989

• Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969

• Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and DangerousOccurrences Regulations 1995 (RIDDOR)

• Noise at Work Regulations 1989

• Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

• Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations2002 (COSHH)

• Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging forSupply) Regulations 2002

• Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994

• Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1994

• Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations 1999

• Dangerous Substances and Explosive AtmospheresRegulations 2002

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is responsible forenforcing the above acts and regulations, in addition to otherlegislation, relevant to the working environment.
