FROM OUR DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Carers,
We hope all our Prospect School mothers had a lovely Mother’s Day and were treated to breakfast followed by volunteers to do the ironing, cook tea and wash the dishes. My treasured memories are the handmade cards and presents I received when my two boys were at school. NAPLAN NAPLAN is a nationally developed program, involving tests for Year 3, 5 and 7 students. It covers Reading, Writing, Language Conventions and Numeracy. Students are sitting this test this week Tuesday 10-12 May. NAPLAN provides a snapshot of your child’s progress; it is another way of finding out what students are able to do. Students have been given an opportunity to become familiar with the Test genre before this week and teachers have worked with their students to lessen their anxiety around the tests. Children who are absent for the tests cannot catch these up after Friday May 13th. Individual NAPLAN reports are expected to be ready for distribution to families in September 2016. GOVERNING COUNCIL AGM A reminder that our Governing Council AGM is on Wednesday 18th May at 7pm in the Staff Room. Please send in your nominations by 5pm on the day. PUPIL FREE DAYS Please note that there are two Pupil Free Days this term. Tuesday 17th May - teachers will be involved in training on “Teaching Reading Comprehension” and Tuesday 14th June- Adelaide Prospect Partnership will be sharing practice in relation to Mathematics. OSHC are now taking bookings for these two days.
Kind Regards,
Christie Butler
(Deputy Principal)

NATURAL MATHS
This term Ann Baker, a well-known mathematics educator
who specialises in mental computation and maths problem
solving is working with the Adelaide Prospect Partnership,
including many of our teachers. She presents students with
real life problems that relate to her life and which really
capture the attention of and engages students.
Ann Baker is very much about letting ‘students do all the thinking’ and ‘all the learning’. She places great
empathises on children working through problems on their own or with a partner with limited direction
from the teacher.
As teachers, Ann reminds us that we are not telling children what to do or how to solve a problem.
Instead we should only ask questions that require them to reflect on their thinking and decision making
e.g. What do you think you need to do and why? What would happen if? Why did you choose to do it
like that? Is there a different way? Would you do it differently next time? How did
you get that number?
Children don’t learn from telling they learn from ‘doing’. Children are more likely to
remember something when they experience it for themselves rather than when they
are ‘told’ and expected to remember or repeat. Problematised situations are a great
approach to teaching mathematics as they require students to think and communicate
mathematically and learn and apply and trial a range of mental computation strategies.
The inaugural PPS Hot Shots Competition took place in term 1. It was played on
Thursday afternoons for 7 weeks and made available for Year 3, 4 & 5 students.
40 students took part in the competition which consisted of 10 teams of 4
students. It was fantastic to see such a big turn out to our first competition and I
can only imagine how big our next competition in term 4 will be.
Congratulations to Alex, Cody, Kosta and Fletcher from The Flaming Reds who
won the competition in term 1.

beginning of Term 3 and staying for 3 weeks. They will be arriving on Tuesday, 26th
July
(After the school holidays) and will be leaving on Saturday 13th August.
The general experience for families who have previously been hosts has been very positive and
rewarding. A monetary allowance and support is provided to assist with the accommodation of
the students during their stay.
The visitors will attend school and participate in daily classroom programs as students of our
school, as well as participating in organised excursions that will provide an opportunity to
explore Adelaide and surrounds.
We would really appreciate anyone interested to contact Michelle or
