Fastigiate Birch
This tree is also known as “The Lady of the Woods”, due to its gracefuland slender appearance.
Betula pendula is a pioneer species, and even though it seems to groweverywhere in the UK, it is very difficult to transplant bare rooted, however containerised trees counter this trend and do very well postplanting.
Betula pendula has foliage that is small and plentiful and a conical andsemi weeping crown shape, responsible for its graceful appearance.Like all Birch trees, Betula pendula has an attractive bark which iscreamy white and develops horizontal lines and large, diamond shapedcracks as the tree matures.
This large and vigorous birch tree grows well on most soils but is notwell suited to areas where the soil becomes compacted.
Betula pendula is a woodland tree which requires plenty of space togrow; it is suitable for parklands and large gardens and is especiallysuited to schemes which are aiming for an ornamental feel with a nativefocus. The fastigiate variety proposed will help to reduce spread andresult in a more suitable form for the streetscape environment.
Mature height: 12-17m
Rowan
Sorbus aucuparia Joseph Rock is a stunningvariety of Mountain Ash that is derived from theChinese species. This Mountain Ash presents asimilar foliage to the species, with small, narrowdark green compound leaves that turn a flamered in the autumn time.
The flowers are creamy white and hang inclusters, appearing around May-June. These arefollowed by interestingly creamy yellow berries, that also hang from the tree in clusters andwhose colour contrasts fantastically with thebright red autumn colour.
Sorbus aucuparia Joseph Rock has stifflyascending branches as a juvenile tree, going onto form a small, rounded tree at maturity and willtolerate most soil types.
Mature Height: 3-7m
Fastigiate Hornbeam
Carpinus betulus Frans Fontaine is an upright variety of Hornbeam whichmaintains its tight pyramidal shape well into maturity.
This Hornbeam was selected from a street in the Netherlands in the 1980’s andhas leaves which are oval in shape, extremely ribbed and serrated around theedges, taking on an almost crinkly appearance.
The foliage is a bright green in spring, turning to gold and orange in the autumntime. Carpinus betulus Frans Fontaine is a much better choice for planting inrestricted areas than Carpinus betulus Fastigiata as it retains its columnarshaped crown, being only 3m wide after 25 years.
It tolerates pollution and soil compaction, making it an excellent choice for streettree planting. This medium to large Upright Hornbeam is a tough performer andwill do well in most soils, including clay and chalk. It is a good choice for poorsoil conditions.
Carpinus betulus Frans Fontaine is a super selection for avenue planting, producing classic uniformity and architectural shape coupled with a nice show ofcolour in the autumn time.
The standard specimens are available with a 1.8-2m clear stem.
Mature height: 17-22m
Vilmorins Rowan
The pinnate foliage is fine and fern-like , whilstautumn brings shades of red and purple to theleaves. In early summer, small white flowers incorymbs are produced that adorn thisornamental tree in a fluffy froth that is verypopular with wildlife, especially bees. In theautumn heavy bunches of rose pink berriesare formed, which slowly turn to white andhang onto branches well into the winter.
This is a small Rowan tree that will grow to 4 x4 metres in 20 years and has an elegantspreading habit. A variety that is tolerant ofmost conditions including exposed sites butprefers a slightly acidic soil where possible.Vilmorins rowan is the perfect tree when thereis room for only one.
