I. Title of the thesis:
The techniques used for teaching speaking at Darunnajat Islamic
Boarding School of Tegal Munding – Pruwatan – Bumiayu in the
Academic Year 2012/2013
(A Descriptive Analysis on Senior High School Level)
II. Introduction ( Background of the study )
Most of the people believe that speaking is an important skill
that to be acquired by the learner when learning foreign language.
The success of the study is measured from the ability of speaking.
Speaking becomes an essential skill in learning language because
by speaking someone can deliver his ideas, suggestion, or express
his feeling directly. Speaking is a primary skill form because one
of the language functions is to communicate, to deliver a thought
effectively. It is strengthened by Ramelan (1992:13) who states
that all humans wherever they live speak language although they
do not any writing system to record their language.
The main goal of most people who learn English is to be able
to speak. If someone wants to master English comprehensively,
he must master speaking because the success of learning a
language is measured from his speaking ability in the language.
Teaching and learning English emphasizes on 4 skills: reading,
writing, listening, and speaking, those skills are connected one to

the other, but in this case speaking has complete connection with
writing, listening, and reading.
Based on my observations, the writer has inspired some
schools to such a special system with emphasizes on learning
Arabic and English. This system is originally pioneered by
Gontor Islamic boarding school that has become well-known by
Arabic and English system. Furthermore, such a system is being
famed and goes in trend later, especially in the circles of Islamic
boarding school.
Darunnajat Islamic boarding school is such an institutions
that makes Arabic and English Obligatorily used in it
environment. All of the members of the institutions should speak
the language they choose, in their daily conversation or in the
learning process. This attempt is likely to promote students’
English capability especially in speaking.
In teaching learning process they are many approaches,
methods and techniques to be applied. In this case approach is
axiomatic, it describe the nature of subject matter. Meanwhile, a
technique is procedural and implementation of the teacher
knowledge.
This actually takes place in the classroom. There are many
techniques to develop students’ speaking activities such as:
dialogue, discussion, dictation, role play, retelling story,
conversation and describing picture, etc. every teacher has a

chance to choose one of them to support their teaching learning
activities. The writer wants to know, what kind of technique that
the teacher used at Islamic boarding school of Darunnajat use?.

To avoid mistakes and understanding in this content of the
topic, it is necessary to define the key terms used in this study.
As for terms which require to be explained in this writing as
follow :
1. Direct Method
Diller (1978) said that Direct method is to be convey
directly in the target language through the use of
demonstration and visual aids, with no recourse to the
students’ native language.
2. Speaking skills.
Speaking is the productive skill in the oral mode. It, like the
other skills, is more complicated than it seems at first and
involves more than just pronouncing words.

II. Introduction ( Background of the study )
People in the world communicate using language, because language is
an instrument of communication among the member of a speech community.
Although, some people in that community cannot read or write they are still

instrument of communication among members of the some culture is best
suited to convey the meaning current in that particular culture.
English is considered as international language. It has an important
role in transferring, science and technology from more advanced countries to
Indonesia. In Indonesia, English becomes the first foreign language. Now
English is taught as the compulsory subject in junior high school and senior
high school, even English is taught in Elementary school and kindergarten. It
proves that English as International language plays very important role for
communication.
English languages also have some elements; they are structure or
grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and spelling. Many students who study

speaking and writing. Without understanding grammar, it is impossible for
students to speak English well. So grammar is an important thing to support
