The survey of over 8,000 faculty found that 41% of college
professors use social media as a teaching tool, up from around
34% in 2012.
WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?
“Social media refers to interaction among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks” (Wikipedia).
TYPES OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Social Bookmarking. (Delicious, Diigo) Interact by tagging websites and searching through websites bookmarked by other people.
Social News. (Digg, Reddit) Interact by voting for articles and commenting on them.
Social Networking. (Facebook, Google+) Interact by adding friends, commenting on profiles, joining groups and having discussions.
Social Photo and Video Sharing. (YouTube, Flickr, Instagram, Vine) Interact by sharing photos or videos and commenting on user submissions.
Blogs & Wikis. (Wikipedia, WordPress, Blogger) Interact by adding articles and editing existing articles.
Micro Blogging. (Twitter, Tumblr) Let your friends or followers know what you are up to, using up to 140 characters.
Curation Sites. (Pinterest, Scoop.it, Storify) Organize content, facilitate collaboration and share with others.

• Expand your classroom and include people that might be subject-matter experts in their discipline. Use a hashtag to facilitate guest speaker discussions.
• Form student study groups with the use of Google+ Hangouts and other social tools.
INTEGRATING REAL-WORLD APPLICATIONS INTO TEACHING
• Creating a public profile to showcase personal research interests and to connect with a broad audience.
• For journalists, LinkedIn has proven to be an invaluable tool to reach out to sources, from CEOs to corporate PR representatives.
• Writing classes can use social media to practice writing: Amazon reviews, Yelp, Foursquare, Rotten Tomatoes (movies).
