Whats our Mission

Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence seeks to end domestic violence in the moment and for all time, addressing all sides of the issue by helping victims to rebuild their lives, building resilience in children who are exposed to domesticviolence, and advocating for responsible change.

Next Doors HistoryIn 1971, Bea Robinson and Latina activists concerned about violence they and others experienced joined together to start a hotline and refuge for victims of domestic violence and their children. This refuge, called the WOMA (Womens Alliance) began and operated out of a garage in San Jose. It was the second domestic violence shelter in California and was the first domestic violence shelter offering bilingual (English-Spanish) services in the nation. 1989 the program expanded and was renamed Next Door Solutions to Domestic Violence.

Highlight from our 2010-2011 fiscal year The 24-hour Emergency Shelter kept 312 women and children safe for 8,088 bed nightsNext Doors 24-hourHotline responded to 14,636 crisis and non-crisis English and Spanish calls.

How our Programs Helped ContinuedOur Legal Program served 639 clients with 8,141 acts of advocacy, including court accompaniment, restraining orders, and immigrant victim services. Crisis Counseling provided 1,125 walk-in clients with crisis intervention, safety plans and resources that gave them their familys options to violence and abuse.
