Promoting Health & WellnessOne of the challenges facing many senior citizens is staying physically fit.

Joe Yonkman, vice president of business development for Home Instead

Senior Care, says Home Instead caregivers work with clients to provide the

assistance they need to do just that.

“For someone who has come home from the hospital, it might be as

simple as taking a few steps each day and regaining strength,” he says. “For

others, there might be a physical therapy regimen that has been prescribed,

and that’s difficult to maintain if you have to do it alone.” Yonkman says

some clients enjoy a walk along the B-Line Trail, and one client, at the age of

88, enjoys a weekly game of tennis.

Caregivers are thoroughly screened and carefully matched with clients.

“We have more than 130 caregivers, so we can find the person who is the

best fit,” Yonkman says. “That means if a client wants to focus on physical

activity, we can pair them with a caregiver who’s a health nut, someone who

really enjoys exercise and promoting health and wellness.”

Home Instead offers a variety of services for in-home senior care and

elderly companionship. These include Home Helper Services (helping with

housekeeping, meals, and accompanying clients to appointments and

events), Personal Services (helping with grooming, bathing, eating, and med-

ication reminders), Companionship Services (providing healthy interaction,

including conversation and outings), and Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care.

Whether it’s working through physical therapy, getting out for a walk, or

any other type of exercise, Home Instead wants seniors to stay active and

fit. “We want to help you be as healthy as you can be, and help you make a

friend along the way,” Yonkman says.

If you’ve lost your confident, winning smile due to ill-fitting dentures or deteriorating teeth, Dr. Mark Sutor of the Periodontics and Implant Center of Southern Indiana wants you to know it’s possible to regain your confidence with dental implants. “This is a phenomenal treat-ment, particularly for these two groups of patients,” says Dr. Sutor. “Dental implants provide immediate tooth replacement in one day for people who have dentures and want more permanent teeth or people who are at the end of the life of their natural teeth and have, really, given up on dentistry.”

Many people are unaware that one-day dental implants are pos-sible. “People think treatment will take months, or even years. They don’t realize that in just one day they can have a new, confident smile,” Dr. Sutor says. “It doesn’t have to be a long, drawn-out pro-cess. I’ve had patients who have had their natural teeth removed and had implants put in the same day.”

One-day implant treatment has several benefits over conventional treatment, including fewer appointments, decreased treatment time, the ability to immediately use the implants without waiting for healing, lower long-term cost, and a high rate of patient satisfaction.

Dr. Sutor is the most experienced dental implant surgeon in southern Indiana. His education began with a degree in dentistry from Baylor College, followed by a master’s in periodontics and a surgical residency at the University of Kentucky. He completed a general prac-tice residency at the Veterans Administration in Lexington, Kentucky, and then moved to Bloomington in 1991.

Dr. Sutor works with each patient’s personal dentist to design a treatment plan, and that relationship continues after the implant pro-cedure. Patients see their own dentists on a regular basis, but con-tinue to see Dr. Sutor so he can monitor the health of their mouths, bone, and implants. “We work with their dentist to alternate clean-ings, and we continue to work in a cooperative manner to help the patient maintain the investment they made in their mouth,” Dr. Sutor says. “We want to create an environment where patients rehabilitate their mouths and then maintain that health into the future. One of the best ways to pamper yourself is to visit a spa, and two of the best spas in the country — and some might say the world — just happen to be in southern Indiana. “When the hotels were restored, we built two world-class, four-star spas,” says Kimberly Allen, spa director at the French Lick and West Baden Spas at the French Lick Resort. Allen says guests will want to visit both spas, because while they are equally luxurious, they are also slightly different in atmosphere, décor, services, and product lines. “That’s one of the things that really sets us apart,” she says. “We have two completely restored, historic hotels on the grounds. You can visit both hotels, visit both spas, and have two different experiences.”

The Spa at French Lick is the larger of the two, with 30 treatment rooms. “We offer a special buy-out program where corporations or other groups can have exclusive use of the spa for an entire day,” Allen says. “We work with them to customize the event, helping them plan treatments, as well as food, drinks, and music.” The Moroccan mud wrap and products such as Eminence Organic Skin Care, a handcrafted, organic skin-care line made in Hungary, are exclusive to The Spa at French Lick.

The Spa at West Baden is slightly smaller, with 12 treatment rooms. “Because it’s smaller, it’s more quiet and tranquil,” Allen says. The marble inlaid floors and other Old World influences are reminis-cent of the best European spas. Specialized products at The Spa at West Baden include Babor, a German skin-care line, and ZO Skin Care by Dr. Obagi.

Spa guests are consistent in their praise for the spas, the services offered, and the staff. Allen thinks she knows why: “We’ve been very clear in our mission — we’re focused on relaxation and pampering. We emphasize to our staff that our guests need to be treated well, and they are.” Many spa guests are world travelers who choose to return time and again to The Spas at French Lick. “Our guests compare us to the nicest hotels in Las Vegas or to the best beachfront resorts,” Al-len says. “And they often say they have been all over the world and the best massage they have ever received was right here in French Lick.”

Getting to know someone is the foundation for every good relationship.

At Autumn Hills Alzheimer’s Special Care Center, taking the time to learn

about each new resident is the basis of the Meaningful Moments program.

“We reminisce with families to gain insight into their history,” says Admin-

istrator Adam Foust. “Knowing each resident’s unique life story allows us

to provide a care plan specifically developed for them.” For example, if a

resident is in a moment looking for a parent, the staff will help with their

search but then encourage them to get involved with another activity while

they wait. “It’s important for us to stay in the moment with the resident

rather than correct them,” Foust explains. “Then we redirect them into an

activity they enjoy doing, which we learned from their life story.”

Autumn Hills offers specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s disease

and related dementias. “Our philosophy is ‘aging in place,’” Foust explains.

“We provide continuous evaluation and care plan meetings with families,

and offer home health and hospice care options as needed.” The facility

also offers a respite program. “For family members who are primary care-

givers, this can be an opportunity to take a break from full-time caregiving,”

Foust says.

Foust encourages those with questions or concerns to contact Com-

munity Resources Director Amanda Mosier. “Amanda has a background

in social work and has worked in dementia care for more than 13 years,”

he says. “Along with our connection to the Alzheimer’s Association, we’re

very knowledgeable about memory care providers. We want to serve as a

resource for the community.”

Tenth & College campus in downtown Blooming-ton has added another retail establishment —

10 Salon & Spa. General Manager Teresa Russell says the full-service, high-end salon offers cuts, color, and styling, as well as spa treatments featuring the Dermalogica product line. “Our skin changes all the time, every day and with each season, so each facial and body treatment we do is custom designed to meet your skin’s needs in the moment,” she explains. 10 Salon & Spa offers a full line of wraps, scrubs, and other facial and body treatments, as well as spa manicures, massage, and waxing.

Developer of the Tenth & Col-lege Campus Elliot Lewis says that as Bloom-ington has grown and the downtown area has expanded, the demand for big-city salon services has in-creased. “Teresa will be fantastic at delivering these services given her years of experience in the industry,” Lewis says. “She’s also

been recognized regionally and nationally for her expertise in training students.”

As owner and director of Hair Arts Acade-my, Russell has received several annual Step Out and Stand Out national awards from the Nuts and Bolts Business Training Programs. She also received a Team Leader of the Year nomination for her abilities as an educa-tor. Under her direction, Hair Arts Academy students have received national nominations for Student of the Year awards for the past three years. Russell trained at the Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica, California, and Hair Arts Academy is one of only 17 schools in the country to be accredited by the Sas-soon Academy.

10 Salon & Spa“Vidal Sassoon is well known in our indus-

try, and that accreditation sets us apart from other schools,” Russell says. “Our students get that Sassoon education at Hair Arts Academy, and the stylists at 10 Salon & Spa will have the same training. That’s what’s so great about the salon — our staff will always have the latest education because it’s some-thing I value and something I promote.”

10 Salon & Spa is the latest amenity at the growing campus at Tenth & College. “Over the last ten years, we’ve looked at the most innovative features and high-end, quality components from around the country. These additions have made the campus highly sought after,” Lewis says.

As for Russell, she says 10 Salon & Spa is a dream come true. “I’m excited because it really is my dream. I got to design the space and select the staff. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a salon,” she says.

It’s something so quick, so easy — and it changes lives. Dr. Michael Hoffman

of Bloomington Podiatry Centre says that problems that have plagued pa-

tients for a lifetime can be fixed in minutes through minimally invasive surgery.

“A man shared with me that when he was 9 years old, his cousins

made fun of his little toes. They crossed over the toes beside them,” Dr.

Hoffman says. “For 30 years he didn’t go barefoot, he didn’t wear sandals.

Now he wants to go to Florida and he, quite literally, can’t go. In less than

20 minutes we corrected the problem, and it really did change his life.”

Dr. Hoffman and his partner, Dr. Gene DeVane, are leaders in the

field of minimally invasive surgery, serving as instructors of the method to

other podiatrists at the annual Academy of Ambulatory Foot and Ankle

Surgeons. They have the only practice in the state where patients receive

foot surgery involving an incision no larger than one-quarter of an inch —

and no stitches. With such a small incision, there is very little scarring, and

minimally invasive surgery costs less, causes less discomfort, and offers a

faster recovery than traditional surgery.

That’s one of the many reasons patients choose Bloomington Podiatry

Centre. Another is the caring people who work there. “Our staff contributes

a lot to the practice,” Dr. Hoffman says. “Everyone makes a difference in

the lives of our patients.”

“All of medicine, from hip surgery to heart surgery, is going toward mini-

mally invasive techniques,” Dr. Hoffman says. “That’s why people come to

us from the five neighboring states to have surgery here in Bloomington.

This is what we specialize in. Why would you do it any other way?”

Changing Lives with Minimally Invasive Surgery

Patients visiting the Center for Dental Wellness are greeted by name as

they come in the door, and their short wait for an appointment is spent

in a comfortable seating area where sofas and chairs surround a cheerful

fireplace. Helping patients feel relaxed and at ease is important to J. Blue

Davis, DDS, and his entire staff. “I emphasize communication, kindness,

and understanding, and I insist on that from everyone in our office,” Dr.

Davis says. “We’re here to serve our patients, make them comfortable, and

help them understand their treatment options.”

While offering a warm and inviting atmosphere, the Center for Dental

Wellness takes advantage of the latest technology — including CEREC

ceramic restorations, ZOOM! teeth whitening, Invisalign “invisible” braces,

and The Wand computer-controlled anesthesia system. Services range

from checkups and cleanings to minor oral surgery. The Center for Dental

Wellness also provides dental care for the entire family. “For busy families,

this can really be an advantage,” Dr. Davis says. “With two dental hygien-

ists, we can usually see everyone for cleanings and checkups in one day.”

Dr. Davis is a graduate of the IU School of Dentistry and spent two

years practicing children’s dentistry in Indianapolis before moving to

Bloomington nearly seven years ago. The Center for Dental Wellness is a

private, locally, and dentist-owned practice. Dr. Davis states, “I like being a

one-dentist practice because it allows for continuity of care.”

“We’re 100 percent committed to being an excellent general dental

office,” Dr. Davis says. “Most of our new patients are referrals. They’re here

because another patient recommended us. That says something really

positive about our practice.”

A Local, Family-Practice Dentist Here to Serve You

The Health & Living Center at Bell Trace offers specialized short-term rehabilitation services for anyone who needs temporary assistance following illness or injury. One important service is the Speech Therapy program, which includes screening, evaluation, and therapy for language, voice, articulation, and communication disorders, as well as dysphagia — difficulty swallowing. Chris Buehler is a speech language pathologist at Bell Trace. She says there are a number of things that can lead to dysphagia. “It could be due to stroke, brain in-jury, or neurologic impairment from a disorder like Parkinson’s Disease or ALS,” she says. Signs and symptoms of dysphagia include cough-ing during or after swallowing, choking on food or liquid, pain when swallowing, the sensation of food getting stuck when swallowing or a lump in the throat, fatigue during meals, and weight loss. Losing the ability to swallow is serious. Complications include aspiration pneu-monia, dehydration, malnutrition, and diminished quality of life.

“Swallowing is something we take for granted,” Buehler says. “We don’t think about it until there’s an impairment — we just do it.” Buehler explains there are two parts to swallowing: the part you have control over — when you have food or liquid in your mouth and you prepare to swallow it — and the part you have less volitional control over after you have begun to swallow. “But studies show you can help that second part of the swallow along, and that is where Vital-Stim comes into play,” she says.

VitalStim is a neuromuscular electrical stimulation therapy that promotes a safe, effective swallow by strengthening the swallowing muscles and improving motor control. This FDA-approved therapy

method applies electrical stimulation to the muscles of the lips, cheeks, tongue, jaw, and throat, thereby facilitating muscle contrac-tion and stimulating the swallow. In conjunction with active oral motor exercises and swallowing techniques, VitalStim therapy helps patients regain the swallow function.

Buehler, who is in her fifteenth year as a speech language patholo-gist, says she finds this new approach exciting. “It helps to elicit more muscle movement, so it’s a way to get more of what we’re looking for,” Buehler says. “Some of my patients are unable to take anything by mouth. My hope is that by using VitalStim, in addition to the other techniques, they will again be able to eat and drink safely.”

Since opening Royale Hair Parlor in 2012, owner Bridgett DiVohl has

placed a strong emphasis on education. Each of the three apprentices in

her salon are required to continue their training beyond what they learn on

the job, and DiVohl teaches styling techniques at times the salon isn’t open

for business. She says any of Royale’s seven regular stylists are always

welcome to attend those sessions. “Still, I was surprised when one day I

had all of them show up,” she says with a laugh. “It says a lot about their

commitment when they are willing to come in on their day off for a class.”

The latest emphasis at Royale has been on perfecting blow dries.

“We’ve focused on developing efficiency and consistency in styling,” DiVohl

says. The salon offers clients a book filled with photos of various blow dry

styles so they can easily select the look they want. Along with the photos

are descriptors — words like “sleek,” “volume,” or “beachy,” to help clients

and stylists get on the same page before getting to work. “We’re trying to

keep it simple for the client, and the staff has been trained to create each

style in the book.”

DiVohl says growing the blow dry business is a natural progression for

the salon, and something clients have asked for. “This is for women who

want to feel pampered without committing to a cut or color,” she says.

“You can come in when you have an important event and get an amazing

blow dry in 30 minutes.” The salon will offer specials on Thursdays and

Saturdays, blow dry punch-card packages, and Happy Hour promotions.

An Amazing Blow Dry Experience at Royale

Meadowood Retirement Community is well known as place where seniors

live their lives to the fullest, but what many people don’t know is that

Meadowood can be a transitional home for those needing help recover-

ing from a stay in the hospital after injury, surgery, heart attack, or stroke.

“A lot of people look at Meadowood and see either independent living or

a nursing home,” says Troy Haltom, marketing coordinator for the Health

Pavillion. “But Meadowood also has outstanding inpatient- and outpatient-

rehabilitation services.”

Meadowood offers a comprehensive therapy program that includes

occupational, physical, and speech therapy programs. These rehabilitation

services focus on improving each client’s ability to live independently and

to their fullest potential. Therapies focus on restoring skills that may have

been lost due to a recent injury or medical condition. If the nature of the

loss is permanent, the therapist will work with the client to help them learn

strategies to make up for the lost abilities.

For seniors, it’s good to know that the first 20 days of these therapies

are typically covered by Medicare Part A if the patient has had a 3-night

qualifying hospital stay. “We offer a place to go after the hospital, but before

you go home, where someone will prepare your meals, help you with the

therapies prescribed by your physician, and keep you involved in social ac-

tivities,” Haltom says. “You have round-the-clock nursing care and comfort,

so when you do go home you are feeling better and are better able to care

for yourself.”

From everyday office worker to weekend warrior to professional athlete,

everyone has aches and pains that need attention. While massage feels

good, its affects are temporary at best. Philip Clampitt, owner of Rolf Pos-

ture Balancing, Inc., is a Guild for Structural Integration (GSI) Certified Rolf

Practitioner. He says the Rolf Method of Structural Integration brings more

long-lasting relief from chronic pain than massage and has goals similar to

chiropractic without adjusting the joints, correcting the misalignment that led

to pain in the first place.

After receiving his education at the Guild for Structural Integration in

Boulder, Colorado (now located in Salt Lake City, Utah), Clampitt continued

his training at the Chicago Chiropractic & Sports Injury Centers, working with

more than 500 clinical patients and totaling more than 3,000 clinical hours. “I

worked with people from every walk of life,” he says. “I was basically working

with every kind of ache and pain, from the everyday injuries of the average per-

son to the sports injuries of professional athletes from the NHL and the NBA.”

Single sessions will offer relief for many problems, but Clampitt says the

greatest relief is found when clients commit to the 10 Series. “Most people

are walking around with some postural imbalance,” he says. “Ten sessions

of this technique can transform the body like no other therapy.” In the 10

Series, clients come each week or every other week as the body is slowly

realigned. Still, any amount of Rolf Bodywork is beneficial, Clampitt says.

“It improves flexibility, enhances alignment and range of motion, and heals

chronic pain. I think anyone and everyone can benefit from this therapy.”

Transform Your Body

The time to start looking for in-home senior care is before you need it, says

Stacey Goffinet, marketing manager for Comfort Keepers of Bloomington.

Rather than wait until you are forced to pick a provider because you or a

loved one are in need of immediate assistance, looking at in-home care

early allows you to do your research and make a well-informed choice. “So

many people wait until the last minute,” she says. “But the best time to call is

before you need help.”

Comfort Keepers is an in-home personal service agency, locally owned

and operated by Doug Johnson and Ann Kerr, RN, who also own Elder’s

Journey Home Care. Elder’s Journey specializes in geriatric case manage-

ment, and is licensed by the state of Indiana as a medical home health care

company. With just a phone call, both Comfort Keepers and Elder’s Journey

are available for free, in-home consultations.

Comfort Keepers utilizes “Interactive Caregiving,” which Goffinet de-

scribes as a distinctive caregiving approach that allows “seniors to take as

active a role in their own care as they are able.” Key components to Interac-

tive Caregiving include encouraging clients to stay physically and mentally

active, promoting healthy eating habits, and maintaining a focus on home

safety — important avenues to health that allow seniors to continue living

independently at home.

Goffinet says Comfort Keepers strives to be the best in-home care

service. “We want to be your choice,” she says. “We cater to our clients, and

we work hard to accommodate their needs. We want each of them to stay

safe and comfortable in their own home for as long as possible.”

Only Comfort Keepers Offers Interactive Caregiving

Whether they’re taking a quick morning shower or a luxurious soak in the tub, in the end everyone needs to lather up and get clean. When they do, more and more people are swapping commercially produced soaps and bottles of body wash for handcrafted bars of soap made with natural ingredients. Mark Jennings, wellness buyer for Blooming-foods, says several factors play in to the ever-growing popularity of the local, artisanal soaps the store carries.

“They’re devoid of controversial ingredients, and you can buy one of these bars for between $3 and $4,” he says. “When you do, you’re supporting a local business. That’s important to people in Blooming-ton. And it doesn’t hurt that some of them smell amazing!”

At least half a dozen local brands are sold at Bloomingfoods, including Soapy Soap’s Sabun, Simple Soapworks, Earth Drops, Pure & Simple, Teehaus, and Earth and Wind Creations. These handcrafted soaps are made in small batches and retain the natural glycerin found in the oils (usually palm, coconut, or olive) used in the soap making process. That means instead of drying your skin like many commercially produced soaps, these bars actually help your skin retain moisture.

Every brand is different, but customers can buy any of them with confidence, Jennings says. “Some use organic ingredients, and none of them use controversial ingredients,” he remarks. “If you look at the labels, you’ll see there isn’t anything there you don’t recognize.” In fact, with the exception of essential oils, the ingredient lists on the soaps include a lot of items used in cooking and baking: coconut oil,

palm oil, olive oil, safflower oil, wheat germ, shea and cocoa butters, teas, herbs, and spices.

Natural soaps are always gentle, and for those with sensitive skin, unscented bars are also available. But there’s something special about the way these soaps smell, whether it’s the scent of spicy clove, refreshing basil-lime, floral-scented jasmine, or earthy patchouli. “I think these soaps appeal to everyone, and I don’t know that there is any one type of person who buys handcrafted soaps,” Jennings says. “I do know that when I see people smelling them, they usually end up buying them.”
