Back to the basics…..
In case of doubt fall back to the Science Management Plan
The project scientist….
…monitors the development of the space and ground segment to ensure that the scientific objectives of the mission can be achieved and to maximise its scientific output within programmatic constraints.
...pays special attention to those aspects that are directly related to the scientific performances of the mission, in particular the payload and the Science Ground Segment.
For these issues the PS is advised by the Euclid Science Team.

Status of Performances (1)Requirements for Galaxy Clustering analysis is ongoing: A full 15000 deg2 survey area which can meet the C and P requirements is presently not available resolution by M-CDR
it’s caused by the combination of slitless spectroscopy with SNR, background level and stardensitiesmitigations and science impact are under investigation
STOP = System Thermal Optical Performance analysis is ongoing results will be reviewed at PLM-CDRChecking the WL requirements on the PSF performances: e, FWHM, R2Impact on survey operations
Mission Level Performances are expected at System-CDR AOCS performance AOCS CDR upcoming Spacecraft viewing constraints (also depending on STOP)
SPV2 = Science Performance Verification is ongoing: it is a collective effort of the EC, not an official ESA review but will inform M-CDR on E2E performances
To check with post ICDR system performance knowledge whether we (can) meet top-level (L0) science requirements combined dark energy Figure of Merit
To verify the requirements flow-down and performance budgeting allocations
Convergence at M-CDR in April 2018
ESA UNCLASSIFIED - For Official Use Project Scientist Report | R. Laureijs | 5 June 2017 | Slide 7
Status of Performances (2)
Survey Optimisation ongoing depends on the further evaluation of GC requirements and mission level performances by AOCS and STOP
Alternative dither patterns discussed 5th dither not feasible without additional overheads due to HGA AOCS CDR will give definition and performances of slews, propellant budget System CDR will give the thermal constraints, SAA, etc
(first) FM detectors are now available for characterisation and evaluation by instrument teams at MSSL and LAM.
NIR detectors: Cross hatching, persistence no show stoppers See also Giuseppe Racca’s part
Contamination plan implemented control of straylight Radiation shielding implemented minimising EOL CTI

Operations / SGS
SGS-TK1 – held in June 2016, was a “light” review, but with external reviewers
14 panel recommendations, in particular on the Maturity status of OUs EAS development with database technology to be sorted out
Preparing for SGS-DR kick-off in November 2017 Update of the GDPRD discussions with SGS scientist Marc Sauvage Early operations and Calibration Operation “Assumptions” IOT / OU / SWG support definition

Data
2016 Euclid Photometric Calibration Workshop, ESAC, Sep 20-23 (2016): To obtain an overview of the understanding among the Euclid scientists
regarding photometric calibration and the status of the photometric calibration activities
some 60 EC scientists attended absolute versus relative, colours, surface brightness, …

Legacy Science Discussion
Driven by the discussion on the scope and definition of DR1, in order to maximize the science output of the missionDiscussions about:
science timeline after launch (including the 2020+ science landscape) operational activities before DR1, ...and after DR1 community preparations before launch possible/necessary legacy science preparations before DR1 possible/necessary legacy science preparations before Q1 publications and coordination.
Further discussion at the Garage Days (Friday) and by EST on July 20

Blue Grism (0.92-1.3 micron)
Support from Scarlata, Brinchman, Cimatti and othersWorkshop held at IAP on Dec 1, 2016Inputs received for the “blue grism science definition report”Leading science case: the high redshift universe
Presentation to the EST: endorsement by EST to proceed Draft report circulated, issue 1.0 to be released
Next steps to be discussed! Splinter C9, presentation by Claudia Scarlata on Thursday

ESA led working group: SSOs
The Solar System Objects WG kicked-off in Nice on Nov 24, 2016
VIS 23.5 mag
Simulation byLuca Conversi
Prediction: detection of 1.9-3.5 ×105 of known SSOs in the Euclid Wide Survey, and similar number of unknown SSOs
Stability and high resolution enables detection of: multiple systems (~15% of total fraction is
multiple) object activity light curves (also by multiple systems)
IR is unique: Unambiguous spectral classification for most Euclid detections

Closing Remarks
A lot of work has been done or is still ongoing: SGS-TK1, Instrument CDRs, SGS Challenges, SPV2….Upcoming milestones: PLM CDR, (S)GS-DR, System CDR, Mission CDR, Instrument deliveries, Integrated PLM testingDefinition of operations activities after launch …(after GS-RQR)Integration, Testing and Characterisation of the “real stuff” become more and more prominent
The real stuff is not made of paper! complex mechanical systems Manufacturing skills, AIT, PA/QA now become important
Improving knowledge on the performances in the coming year
