Project Description  Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to help students accomplish two things: mastering their multiplication tables and learning how to make and edit a simple digital video.  In this project, each student will choose a number (1­10) and multiply that chosen number by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10, displaying the product by counting out that many items (cereal pieces, coins, apples, etc).  Students should be able to recognize patterns during their multiplication and creatively display those patterns in their video.    Steps

1. Choose a number (1­10) and multiply it by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.  Write the products down and have them handy!  

  2. Choose an object that you would like to display your products with.  Keep in mind that the products could be very large!  3. On separate flash cards or pieces of paper, write the multiplication sentences, but not the product.  Write the product on the back of the flash card.    

4. Find a way to clearly display the flash card, items displaying the product, and answer.  I chose to use a solid piece of construction paper as a background.    

  5. While a parent/friend/tripod is filming, work your way through the multiplication table of the number of your choice.  Make sure to clear the items from the display space each time so the pattern can be repeated and recognized by other students.  I **Bonus Opportunity: If you have a fun fact about a number (prime number, perfect square, etc.) pause the video to explain your fun fact!  6. In iMovie (or any video­editing software), edit your movie to be between 1 and 2 minutes long. Edits can include but are not limited to: speed changes, music, lighting changes, and narration. Please remember to choose music that won’t be too distracting!   7. Share your video on YouTube, a classroom blog, or send the link to the instructor.    Objectives

One of the objectives for this assignment is to encourage students to think more creatively about math.  Math is something that can cause anxiety for students so I think it is important for students and teachers to incorporate some fun into their math activities.   

Another objective of this assignment is to help students understand the power of an educational video.  Students should realize that educational videos are not only for students to watch but also to make.    Outcomes

In addition with increased knowledge about multiplication and mathematical patterns, students will have a video product.  The video product will show a single digit number, multiplied by all numbers 1­10.  A product for the entire class could be videos for each number that can be used for review and study.
