Nigeria became an independent nation on Oct 1st, 1960. This month, wecelebrated our motherland Nigeria at 50. The celebration was almost pointlesswhen we thought about the educational system.

Although Nigerians aged below 35 constitute more than 70percent of the

nations population, the percentage of Nigerians that get a sound education isdemeaning. To worsen matters, our educational system delivered a 79.4%failure rate in the National Examination Council(NECO).

There is need for an improved higher education system and it must start withus paying attention to our preschool, elementary and secondary school. Theseareas are the building blocks of society's educational foundation and lack of agood education would contribute to social ills including crime and prostitution.

Education not only opens the mind, it expands it. For this reason, we as asociety must invest in our youths by educating them. Can they be educatedwithout school supplies?
