    The Emergence of MissionMission 2030

I (Steve) had just nished sharing a devotional on the Mount o Beatitudes, the amous mountain in Israel that looks out over the Seao Galilee, when I elt the presence o the Holy Spirit. He showed me His love and vision or my lie over the next twenty years. Itwas a holy moment in which the Holy Spirit came and reminded me o all that He had done through the years in planting MountainSprings Church. I was overwhelmed to the point o tears with His aithulness in answer to so many prayersGod had grown a churchrom our basement Bible Study o ve people, to a growing ellowship o three thousand. He spoke to me o His heart or the buildingand rebuilding o the amily and the Church. He showed me that I had been called to plant a thousand churches. I was gripped by theintensity and relevance o Gods word to me. Tis was in 2007, and it was the beginning o a new adventure.

Upon returning to Colorado, we shared with our sta team what God had said in Israel. We all agreed that the Lord was guiding us

toward a twenty year vision. As we sought the Lord, He spoke to us rom two passages. Te rst was Acts 1:8 and the second, Acts5:28.

    But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;

and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

You [the church] have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine.

We were all lled with a burning passion to ll our city with the Word and Spirit. We realized that our starting point needed to be

our own city, Colorado Springs. God spoke clearly to us that one o our theme passages would be Jeremiah 29:7 Seek the peace othe city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behal, or in its peace, you will nd peace. Te leadership teambegan to seek God in prayer or His specic vision or our city and our church. Tere was a growing excitement among all o us thatGod was giving us a providential moment to touch our city.

Over the next six months as we prayed, we began to read extensively about the state o the church and the amily in America. We readover twenty books during this time, pouring over the latest research and seeking to discover what the Holy Spirit was doing in ournation. As pastors, we were astounded at how rapidly the culture in America and the spiritual climate o the Church was changing, andnot or the better. Our hearts were burdened or the spiritual state o our nation.

In 2008 at a Pastoral Retreat in Buena Vista, the Lord gave us the phrase revolution o love. We could seethat the Lord was leading us with a vision or a revolution o love or our city. Many o us on the team begandriving around Colorado Springs, praying or the city, and our hearts were broken or the lost and hurting.

As a result we began teaching through the Gospel o Luke on JesusLiberator. For almost two years we stud-ied the lie, heart, and ministry o Christ. Tis resulted in resh strategies o touching the poor, the hurting, and the spiritually lost. Tis even led us to cancel an entire weekend o worship gatherings so we could headto the streets o Colorado Springs. We were able to complete ty outreach projects in one weekend! Tecontinued impetus was the Neighborhood Vacation Bible Schools this past summer.

Simultaneously, churches and church planters began to connect with us about how wecould help them. Tis led to the development o the Word&SpiritNetwork. As we responded to needs, soughtGod in prayer and asting, and continued with several one-day retreats, God spoke to us His vision. Duringorty days o prayer, God conrmed it through our Elder teams with a resounding yes. Te yes is what wenow callMission2030.

We are humbled that God has chosen Mountain Springs to be the vehicle or His vision. Some o the words we have received overthe past year have been, the work will be unique, God wants to do a new thing, it will be like the book o Acts, intimacy at all

costs, it will take great courage, enlarge the tent, God has given you the city.

Tis vision is too big or any o us or all o us. We are not smart enough, rich enough or wise enough. Only God, working throughHis power, can accomplish His dream or us. It is in cooperating with the Holy Spirit through prayer and aith that we will see Gods

mighty signs and wonders ow through Mountain Springs Church andWord&SpiritNetwork. Tis vision is rom the deep things, the heart, o theSpirit. We are reminded o these words o St. Paul:

Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God hasprepared for those who love Him. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit

searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.

    1 Cor 2:9-11 NKJV

We are a part o a great adventure. It will be exciting to see just how God ac-complishes His work in our time. We are in Gods arena and it is an honor toserve with each o you.

Let us dare greatly in a worthy cause!

Carpe Diem Gloriae Dei. Soli deo Gloria.

Fast orward three years in the lie o Mountain Springs Churchand Word&SpiritNetwork - the picture that awaits us is exciting!Imagine multiple campuses and church plants in our city andbeyond, bringing the good news o the Gospel in a Word-rooted,Spirit-alive and culturally-engaged manner. For me, its hard not toget excited about playing a part in orchestrating and accomplishingthe mission God has given us as a church.

Te opportunity to connect, engage and empower young leaders,or me, is invigorating and highly motivating. Its exciting to see

people get the opportunity to discover and begin to walk in the callingthat God has uniquely given them. And in order to accomplish whatGod is calling us to do, we desperately need the Holy Spirit to giveus the tools to raise up and empower the next generation o leadersin the church. Tis process o discipleship is exactly what God iscalling each o us to as part oproject2030. In this season, I

want to encourage you to seek the Lord diligently about the partHe has or you as we push orward together, ollowing through on

Im very excited about project2030. As I look into the not too distant uture, Isee multiple campuses overowing with energy, where people are drawn to do lietogether in our various community spaces, like the relocated ca on the Woodmencampus with its breathtaking mountain views! Tere will be an increasing numbero lie groups stretching rom one end o town to the other, where more and more

people will nd a sense o belonging, saety and signicance. Out o those groups, newand creative local outreach projects will continue to seed our community with actso kindness communicating the love o Jesusin tangible ways that will change livesorever. Te Helping Hands Food Pantry will be ully operational on our campus, impacting the lives o over 600 needy amilies by providing ood, prayer and otherpractical resources.

I see a learning annex on our campuses where spiritual ormation and lie skill classesare oered to equip and empower people rom all walks o lie to live the supernatu-ral kingdom lie. Families are the backbone o MSC. It is absolutelycritical to build strong and healthy homes and amilies.I we are to make a dierence in the next twentyyears, we must take the churchs responsibilityseriously to call singles, couples, parents and

grandparents to a new level ospiritual ormationwithin the home. We must become intentional inour approach to the spiritual transormation o ourchildren as well as our own lives.

We are using teaching aids with our children andparents to bring the biblical responsibility o thetraining o a child back into the home. Tis willhelp enhance the parents rolein being the primary

teacher, ullling Gods number one purpose or theamily - being the training grounds or His uture plans.

As we embark on project2030, we will need homes ull o the Spirit, thriving marriages, and children growing inavor with God and man. Tis can only happen as we begin to take on the responsibilities o nurturing others in theaith, beginning with our own amilies and moving out beyond those walls. We need mentors or couples, people servingin the childrens classrooms, men sharpening men, older women teaching younger women, and everyone being willing to seekthe Lord. As we become more intentional in our calling to the amily and Gods kingdom, we will see real changebegin to happen in our homes and in His church body. Spiritual ormation will never happen without the power othe Spirit taking control o our lives and our agendas. We need people in the church to model with integrity Godsintent or the amily, our marriages and the home. We need you to step orward and be that person!

Our Student Lie eams goal through project2030is to support the godly role o the parent to disciple a generation ostudents that live solely to refect Gods image!Te question is not i our students will worship, its who will they

worship? Tey only have two options: either they worship God or they bow beore other things. Students todayare being pulled in a hundred dierent directions and the message o the world is to please yoursel at all costs. However, we know that in the war or our students hearts we have a greater power than anything the world hasto oer! We want the Holy Spirit to draw them into a dynamic relationship with the Father through the exposi-toryteaching o Gods Word, genuine biblical community, intense worship through music, and radical missionslocallyand abroad. Trough these areas o impact we believe we will have great opportunities or God to transorm theirhearts! It is our desire that as God turns hearts to him, students will own their aith and integrate it in every aspecto their lives.

We desire or our church home to be a reuge and oasis or students in our community so they can stay connected! We want each o our students within the context o

a small group and to be mentored by God-seekingsmall group leaders made up o young adults andparents. As I close my eyes and dream about the next 20

years o our youth, I see a unied church where youthand parents worship and serve together. I see trans-ormed areas that encourage students to sit together, eat together, study together, play together and learntogether so that they are actively living lie together.

    WORSHIP LIFE

    JosiahDangers

we are looking for men and

    women who are passionate

    about seeking the heart of

    God

    13

Worship is perhaps the most tragically misunderstood element ohow we do church in America. It is oten viewed as merely prep orthe message, the un entertaining part or the part to be endured iyou arent a an o the service, the opportunity to rally the intel-lectually weak and emotionally driven segment o the congregation,or even the time buer so you can get your kids checked in to thenursery late without missing anything really important. When we

view worship this way, we miss that God intended worship to be anopportunity to pour out our heart, soul, mind and strength in love, thanksgiving and adoration to our God who deserves it all. Eectively,

what we say when we dont value worship is, God can do withoutmy aection, but I still want Him to bless me through the messagetoday. He can just like any ather can do without the aection ohis child but it breaks His heart and we will miss His.

We are moving into new rontiers o ministry as a church. project2030will open doors o opportunity like we have never seen beore. Are we going to move into those opportunities as a status quo church, or are we going to press into the heart o God and allowthe power o the Spirit to propel us to take new ground or the Kingdom? Without the elements o worship and prayer beingoreront o our lives and in our strategies we will miss the power o the Spirit as we move ahead. We are looking or men and

women who understand what it is to pour their heart, soul, mind and strength out in worship to Him, and who aregited inleading othersto do the same. Worship leaders, musicians, vocalists, tech savvy people, artists, videographers now is the timeto step up. project2030 must be ueled by the Spirit and led by people who are in step with Him.

So, get ready for an adventure, and lets go!

WORDANDSPIRIT.ORGWe believe in planting leaders! We aspire to launch Word-rooted, Spirit-alive, culturally engaged leaders whowill, in turn, plant Jesus-exalting, Jesus-upliting, Jesus-worshipping churches and ministries. We believe thatbuilding leaders in a grace-lled, relational atmosphere, imparting to them biblical knowledge and practicalministry experiences, will set in motion the planting o churches and ministries that express the ullness o Gods

Word with a deep reliance on the power o the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said that the gates o hell would not prevail against His church. Beginning at Pentecost, the churchwas and still is Gods idea to be the most eective means o expanding His kingdom. Gods church is to bevibrant, lie giving, Word-rooted, and Spirit-alive! Planting new churches o this genre is the most eec-tive way to bring the Gospel to a community and to make Jesus-ollowing, Jesus-exalting disciples. Tus,our strategy always involves locating, equipping, and releasing church planters who are willing to pioneerthe gospel into unchurched and unreached communities. We believe God has given us a mandate to plant1,000 churches, 100 campuses, and raise up 10,000 leaders in this generation.

Word&SpiritNetwork (WSN) derived its name as a result o our commitment to achieve a healthy balanceo two divine expressions. Many churches stress the importance o the Holy Spirit to the neglect o solidteaching rom Gods Word. Other churches have a strong teaching ministry while neglecting the powero the Holy Spirit. We believe in the ullness and blending o both the Word and the Spirit. We believe itis only through the work and power o the Holy Spirit that lives are changed, and it is only through thesubstance and promises o Gods Word that lives are ounded and grounded. We need both. WSN iscommitted to the blending o the Spirit and the Word under the centrality o Jesus Christ. I we are

aithul, we will be privileged to be eective participants in Gods eternal, epic adventurethe expansiono His Kingdom!

    Word&SpiritNetwork is

    a global movement of

    WORD-ROOTED,

    SPIRIT-ALIVE &

    CULTURALLY-ENGAGED

    leaders who impact

    communities through the

    launching and building

    of thriving churches

    and ministries. We are

    dedicated to leadership

    development and

    providing support and

    around the world.

    We believe that the

How and when do I make my commitment?

We will make our commitments the weekend o October 29 & 30 at the project2030 celebrations. Between now and then, seek theLord about how much He would want you to contribute in the orm o a lump sum (please write a check or transer stocks), and a two-year monthly commitment. Remember, this is above and beyond your current tithe. Fill in the amount on the commitment card andturn it in that Saturday or Sunday. You can begin giving toward your two-year commitment immediately the next Sunday through the

Giving Envelope you will receive. I you are not currently tithing, then our suggestion is that you rst start learning the blessing and joyo giving the 10% tithe. Look at the powerul blessings that come your way by looking at Proverbs 3:9-10 and Malachi 3:8-11. You canalways commit to the Project later.

Is it OK to make a commitment to give an amount that I dont have right at the moment?

Yes, that is called aith in the Bible and it pleases God (see Hebrews 11:6). Tis is what some o us on the Senior Leadership eam and

the Board are doing. We dont see the money now, but we are believing God or this amount that He has laid on our hearts to give. Weare cutting back on our spending as much as we can to give to Mountain Springs. We believe that i we trust and pray, He will providesupernaturally.

Will I be able to change my two-year commitment if I need or want to?

Absolutely. Unoreseen circumstances may cause you to want to increase or decrease your giving commitment in the uture. At any timeduring the two-year project, all you need to do is obtain another commitment card and turn it in with your revised commitment.

Most churches employ outside organizations for their building campaigns. What about us?

As a Board and Leadership eam, we have elt condent that God is giving us the grace and aith to believe that we can trust God toraise the needed resources without entering into a ormal relationship with a undraising organization to help us. Many churches eelprompted to enter into a costly relationship to receive coaching or their project. Our perspective is this: i this is Gods idea, God willprovide. We are ollowing the One who is leading us.

Should I consider gifting stock within an IRA account?

It is not recommended that you transer any stocks or mutual unds within IRAs, 401(k)s or other qualied retirement accounts.Doing so could subject the donor to a mandatory 10% IRS penalty (i under 59 years o age) and income taxes on the entire amount

    withdrawn.

Lets pray or a miracle o the Lord!

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, notreluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

    Heres an idea. . .

You may want to consider committing your raises or the next two years to the giving campaign. By so doing, you would be making asubstantial contribution toward our project by simply staying at the same income or two years.

    For example:

I your salary is $20,000 a year and you get a 4% raise each year, by the end o two years you will have contributed $1,632.I your salary is $35,000 a year and you get a 4% raise each year, by the end o two years you will have contributed $2,856.I your salary is $60,000 a year and you get a 4% raise each year, by the end o two years you will have contributed $4,896.

Consider the ollowing ways o decreasing your expenses: Stop using credit cards and pay for everything with cash - you will purchase 30% less and you will save on interest payments Reduce the number of times you eat out, or if possible, eliminate it altogether for a month Reduce entertainment expenses (movies, videos and concerts) and take advantage of freebies - museums, libraries, free events, parks, etc. Stay away from the mall

Cancel your cable TV for six months Use coupons and a list when grocery shopping and never go grocery shopping when you are hungry Cook from scratch whenever possible - its a lot cheaper and much better for you Buy clothes at consignment shops and outlet stores or o-season Keep your car longer - proper maintenance will make the average car last much longer Go camping for vacation rather than to a beach resort or fancy hotel

Consider the ollowing ways o increasing your income: Get a part-time job for a month; take on various services in your neighborhood (babysitting, yard work, home repairs)

Hold a garage sale and convert unused items into cash or sell unused clothing through a local consignment shop Make crafts and sell them Rent out an extra room to a college student Sell that second or third car, carpool more often or take public transportation

    Multisite DetailsWhat is a multisite?

Simple denition: one church amily in multiple places. It is similar to when we added another weekend service but this time we plan tohave it at another location. Tis will enable us to better reach people in the communities where they live rather than expecting them to

come to us. In addition, it will encourage MSC amilies that live in that area, to invite their riends and neighbors.

When you boil it down, the church is really the amily o God. A child carries the DNA o a parent, with unique gits and attributes. Achild also will always remain a part o the amily. Mountain Springs Church, Woodmen Campus, is like the parent and the other cam-puses will carry the same DNA and oer the same core ministries and character, but each may have a slightly dierent avor or stylein some o those ministries. Te core o who we are as MSC will remain the same. We will continue to have one leadership team, oneBoard o Elders, one sta culture, one budget, common vision, strategy, goals, mission and approach to ministry.Church-wide lie areas such as Student Lie and Family Lie will continue tobe important ways in which we connect as one church amily. While there

will obviously be nuances between the campuses, primarily around dieringacilities, each campus will embrace the values o the people o MSC.Why do a multisite?

Our multisite initiative is based on a vision to reach pre-churched people wherethey live. We want to leverage our churchs strengths and maximize our po-tential to impact local communities. Launching multisites helps to develop an

intentional, region-wide strategy that is unique to each community while mini-mizing expenses. New campuses are a direct application o our commitment tomissions because well be placing a body o believers with a heart and passionor a specic region and its people right in their neighborhood and community. Each new campus will also provide more leadership and service opportunities.

Based on our experience we know that people who live within 10 minutes o their church are ar more inclined to invite riends becauseo proximity and amiliarity with the location. Basically, we want to take the church to people as opposed to making them drive to us.Tousands o churches throughout the US have successully launched and led multisite campuses in the past decade. Trough our closerelationship with multisite consultant Jim omberlin, we are condent and aith-lled as we approach our rst launch in 2012. See

www.multisitesolutions.com or more inormation and current stories. Why are we doing this campaign?

Te goal o Mission2030 is to launch 100 multisite campuses, plant 1000 churches and raise up 10,000 leaders, world-wide, by theyear 2030. So, the purpose o Revolution o Love:project2030 is to und the rstchapter o Mission2030 where the Lord is stretching us to be missionally ocusedin and around Colorado Springs. Our plan is to und three new campuses in thenext three years through project2030. In order to reach the goal o 100 campuses

by 2030, we are counting on these campuses to multiply and extend their reachbeyond Colorado Springs. Te Word&SpiritNetwork (WSN) will spearhead thechurch planting and international dimensions o Mission2030. WSN & MSC

will partner in the leadership development processes and pipeline.

    How are locations chosen?

First and oremost, we pray and look or Gods distinctive activity to determinelocation. We also look at the demographics o where clusters o MSC churchmembers live in hopes o launching with a core o at least 200 people who would

help pioneer the new campus. Tis group would serve as the core leadership othe campus and will work together to reach the specic needs o that community.

As a result we have chosen the northwest side as the location or our rst campus.

    Who will lead the campus?

A designated team hired or this specic purpose will serve the new campus, led by our campus pastor. Te campus pastor will be theace o the place, hosting the services, managing all aspects o the campus and shepherding people at that location. He will be pivotalin being the DNA-carrier o what it means to be Mountain Springs. He will be joined in supporting the service and the church by anadministrative/acilities person, a worship leader, a technology lead, a childrens leader and a youth leader. All MSC campuses will be

led by our Lead Pastors and governed by our Elder Board. Tis ensures that all MSC campuses remain accountable, consistent, cohesiveand coordinated with the main campus.

Our rst campus will be led by Brandon Shupp. Brandon recently joined our team ater we recognized his pastoral heart and strategicgiting. Brandon will also help direct our campus strategy and will help to identiy and train other leaders or Mission2030.What will services at the new campus be like?

Services at each o our campuses will be the same in content and style, our DNA. But just like a child carries the DNA o the parent,he also has some unique giting and ability. Since Mission2030 is largely about raising up the next generation o leaders, we have to be

intentional about empowering emerging leaders to grow into their calling.

Tough each campus will be ully video capable, the primary teaching model or each campus will be live in-person teaching. Excel-lent quality video teaching will supplement this when necessary. Pastors Steve and Daniel have ormed a teaching team that will rotatearound the campuses and grow as additional campuses are launched.

What programs will be available at the campus?

Weekend ministry at the campuses will consist o adult worship, student and children ministry and adult education classes. Essentially, all campuses will mirror the Woodmen campus.

    When will this happen?

Ideally, we will launch two campuses in 2012. Te rst will be in spring and the second will likely be in the all. In 2013, we willlaunch 2-3 campuses, dependent upon leadership resources.

How much will each campus cost?

Since each campus has unique needs and costs, particularly associated with real estate costs and availabilities, there will be some uctua-tion rom site to site. Our research indicates that the average multisite campus will cost around $450,000 in total startup costs. Bud-gets will vary moving orward based upon stafng, congregational growth, and other variables. We have outlined a budget o roughly$250-350k annually, but ater the rst eighteen months, each campus should be nancially sel-sustaining.

One o the ways we are deraying cost and employing wise stewardship is through centrally managing many o the operational issuesthrough our main campus.

Sounds great, how do i get involved?

Prayerully consider giving to project2030 so that this new vision becomes a reality. As discussed, there will be all kinds o opportunities to serve. For each campus we need worship, tech, children, student and adult min-istry leaders, to name a ew. Each o these areas requires a group o passionate and gited leaders. Also, as mentioned, we view this as a

leadership training ground o sorts to accomplish Mission2030.

Tat being the case, i you are sensing a stirring in your heart that God may be calling you step out in leadership and service pleasecontact us. Brandon Shupp ([email protected]) will be the primary contact or campus opportunities but you may

want to also consider ConvergenceSeminary, our leadership trainingcourse. For more inormation onthat, or to get signed up, [email protected].

Te project2030 giving project encourages people to consider giving gladly and generously over two years.Tis commitment stretches us to trust God to provide or us so that we can be a part o His work in ourcommunities and the world. Tis may be ullled weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually.

Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds and Personal Property

Tese can be donated to the church to be resold at the discretion o the church administrators. Te donor is credited with a non-

taxable donation which is equal to the ull market value o the git at the time it was given. Te donor also usually avoids paying anycapital gains taxes on the appreciation o the asset. For inormation on donating these types o assets, call Glenn Grosh at 719-548-1500.

    Trusts, Wills, and Insurance

Some people set up charitable trusts during their lietimes, and donate all or portions o this to causes and organizations they believein. Others set up trusts as retirement accounts to provide steady income in their later years. Upon their deaths, they speciy that the re-maining trust amount can be donated to the organizations they have specied. Many include donations o part o their estates as a parto their wills. Still others designate the church as the beneciary (or one o the beneciaries) o their lie insurance policies.

    Tax Advantages

We encourage you to talk to your CPA, nancial advisor, or attorney about the options that would work best or you. Many ways ogiving can oer tax advantages, as well as providing a more substantial git to the church. Pursue these avenues o maximizing yourgiving to provide the most or Christ and His Kingdom.

Maybe it was the back-to-school supplies that cost an arm and a leg, maybe some comments related to ourstock market or hopes or a raise at work at the end o the year.

Gods Word has a lot to say about money and giving. Did you know that 16 out o 38 parables touch on the subject o our money andpossessions? One out of every 10 verses in the Gospels speaks about money? ere are approximately 500 verses in the Bible on prayer;500 verses on faith; but there are nearly 2,000 verses on money-related topics.

    Read Haggai 1:4 & Haggai 2:15

All o us know that it is natural or parents to want their children to learn to be grateul, generous, and giving. In the same way, ourheavenly Father desires His children to become generous and to learn to share whatever they have, whether it is little or much. Goddesires us to be grateul or what He provides, and He wants us to learn to be open-handed with whatever He gives us.

Unortunately, in our modern world, many people struggle with materialism, consumerism, indebtedness, concerns about theirnances, or ear about what might happen in the uture. And in recent years, difcult economic times have challenged people every-

where. But according to the Bible teachings o the prophet Haggai, God sometimes allows cold economic winds to blow to get our

attention so that we will give careul thought to our ways and rediscover the importance o putting God rst in our lives and rst inour nances. God wants us to discover aresh how living a lie o giving, not just getting, leads us to real joy, lasting happiness, and truecontentment.

Here are 7 Keys in learning to live a generous, open-handed lie:

    1. Submityoursel and all you have to the Lord2. Studythe Scriptures on nances and generosity3. Seewhat God has provided in your lie
