President’s Message – Live by the Golden Rule

At last month’s meeting, the Nominating Committee under the chairmanship of Leslie

Montz, presented their proposed slate of officers for the 2015-2016 Woman’s Club

Board. Unfortunately there are two positions that are still unfilled. It reminded me of

the following story called “Whose Job Is It?”

This is a little story about four people named

Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that

Somebody would do it.

Somebody got angry about that because it was Everyone’s job.

Anybody could have done it be Nobody did it.

Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job.

Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that

Everybody wouldn’t do it.

It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what

Anybody could have done.

Please be the Somebody and volunteer to fill one of the positions on the Board.

Anybody can do it but Somebody has to. Let’s not have Nobody. Call Leslie and let

her know. We will have elections in April.

GFWC turns 125 in April so I wondered about the history and accomplishments of our

International Organization of Women's Club. Here are but a few of the facts about

GFWC and they are pretty amazing! So if you're wondering where your money goes at

the international level here are some of the past accomplishments and a little abbreviated

history.

Founded in 1890, GFWC’s roots can be traced back to 1868 when Jane Cunningham

Croly, a professional journalist, attempted to attend a dinner at an all-male press club

honoring British novelist Charles Dickens. Croly was denied admittance based upon her

gender, and in response, formed a woman’s club—Sorosis. In celebration of Sorosis’ 21st

anniversary in 1889, Jane Croly invited women’s clubs throughout the United States to

pursue the cause of federation by attending a convention in New York City. On April 24,

1890, 63 clubs officially formed the General Federation of Women’s Club by ratifying

the GFWC constitution.

1898: GFWC unanimously passed a resolution against child labor and spearheaded many

changes.

1899: GFWC’s Chicago Woman’s Club supported the juvenile court law, the first ever to

be passed in the United States. This law became the model for all subsequent juvenile

court laws.

1906: GFWC member Alice Lakey (1857-1935) spearheaded a letter and telegram

writing campaign, which was essential to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act.

1921: GFWC created the Indian Welfare Committee, which worked improving both

education and health facilities on reservations, as well as preserving Native American

culture.

1930s: Having founded over 474 free public libraries and 4,655 traveling libraries,

women’s clubs were credited by the American Library Association with establishing 75

percent of America’s public libraries. Supporting local libraries continues to be a

Federation priority today.

1934: GFWC began a 10-year study to review the question of the Equal Rights

Amendment (ERA). In 1944, GFWC adopted a resolution in support of the ERA, which

the Federation continues to support today.

1944: Through the GFWC Buy a Bomber campaign during World War II, state

federations sold war bonds worth $154,459,132–enough money to purchase 431 planes.

1960: Brighten the Night was a nationwide Federation campaign for street lighting to

prevent crime and accidents.

1961: GFWC’s Women’s Crusade for Seat Belts program resulted in the installation of

more than one million seat belts over the course of one year.

1997: GFWC renewed its commitment to libraries with the Libraries 2000 project. Over a

five year period, GFWC clubwomen raised and donated $13.5 million to public libraries

and public school libraries across the nation.

2000s: GFWC members contributed $180,000 for a fully-equipped ambulance for use by

the New York Fire Department in response to the loss of equipment suffered during the

terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

March Membership Rally was a huge success this year with 18 guests attending our

luncheon. A special thanks to Lynn Seeden for bringing 10 special guests. She posted on

Facebook that she would buy lunch for the first 7 who responded to her invitation. What

a great idea to bring in new members. One of Lynn’s guests, Jay Adams, joined

Woman’s Club. Jay has lived in this area for 13 years, she is currently the principal at

Masuda School, prior to that she was principal at Gisler and Tamura School. Besides

being busy with four children between 10 and 16 years old, she enjoys dancing, singing

and reading. She is a craft person, cards and scrapbooking are just two of her talents.

Welcome Jay Adams.

Membership dues will be collected at the April and May meetings. $40 checks made

payable to Fountain Valley Woman’s Club. I will be at a table in the back of the room to

collect money before the meeting. Thank you to Liz Lucero for giving me a check at this

meeting. With Jay Adams membership we now have 84 members.

Hello Ladies,

Wasn't our March membership luncheon great! So many guests!

The April luncheon will be the Black Tie Pasta Sit-Down lunch with grilled chicken and

mixed green salad. The healthy choice option will be the Atlantic Salmon. Both lunches

are $20.

Virginia Dishman and Peggy Wilson have volunteered to decorate our tables for April.

Thanks so much, ladies!

Following normal policy, if you are on the permanent list, we will assume that you will

be at the meeting and will order the regular lunch unless I hear from you. If you are

not of the permanent list, please contact me by email or phone to make your reservation.

Also, please let me know if you will be ordering the pasta lunch or the salmon. And, or

course, notify me if you will be adding a guest to your reservation. In wishing to keep

costs down, we must charge you if you make a reservation for yourself or a guest,

and then do not come to the meeting. You are also responsible for the meal charge if

you are on the permanent list, but do not notify me ahead of time that you are

unable to come.

Please email me, Cindy Dobson, at [email protected] or call by Thursday, April

9 by 7pm with any changes if you are on the permanent list, or with your reservation if

you are not. Thanks so much!

Meat-izza Recipe!

A nutritionist friend of mine on Facebook, Ashleigh Travers, posted this recipe (this is

her photo) and said it was "yummy good"!

Meat-izza - A Breadless Pizza!

Crust: 2 pounds of bulk Italian ground sausage (your choice)

1-2 eggs Toppings:

Sugarless pizza sauce such as Monte Benne

Veggies chopped up of your choice such as: bell peppers, onions, garlic, broccoli, mushrooms, spinach, kale, olives, zucchini (her version included spinach, red and yellow bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, bacon)

Grated cheese of your choice: goat, smoked gouda, provolone, mozzarella, cheddar (her version included cheddar and mozzarella)

Oregano and salt/pepper to taste Directions:

Preheat oven to 400. Mix eggs with the sausage by hand, then pat into a lightly oiled cast iron skillet or 9x13 glass baking dish (She lined a baking sheet with foil for easier cleanup). Bake for 20-25 minutes, just till it starts to pull away from the sides of the pan.

Bring the baked sausage "crust" out of the oven, and top with the pizza sauce, loads of veggies and a light sprinkle of cheese. Sprinkle with some oregano and salt/pepper to taste. Put back into oven for about 10-15 minutes, just till cheese is melted and starting to brown.

Cut into squares or triangles, as you would any pizza!

Enjoy!

If you don't take care of your body, where are you going to live!

"The Million Step Project" - April 28, 2015 Stonefire Grill Fundraiser

As of this writing, a few of our most determined million steppers have already hit ONE MILLION STEPS - and we're only 40% into our project!

We are in the final phase of planning for our Stonefire Grill Tuesday, April 28 fundraiser (dine-in or carry-out between 4pm-9:30pm)! Our chosen charities are Special Olympics Host Town project and our own FVWC Scholarship Fund.

Laura Woods, Marilyn Walker and Carol Proctor are giving final touches to our three large baskets and multiple small gift bags for our opportunity drawing that night. YOU WILL HAVE MANY CHANCES TO WIN, AND YOU NEED NOT BE PRESENT TO WIN! Total value is over $1,200 at this time!

We will bring the large baskets and some of the smaller ones to our April Claim Jumper monthly meeting, so you can see them. We will also be selling tickets for the drawings at that time. Robin has also attached our restaurant flyer and our ticket sheet to this newsletter.

Blanketmaking – Marilyn Bennett

A blanket making session is planned for Monday, April 20, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the FV Historical site, Heritage Park (next to the library). As usual, we will be signing up at April’s meeting. Unfortunately, we hit a’ hurdle in the road’ in March and had to cancel March’s session. So, plan to join us in April—for the day or even a few hours. The opportunity drawing for the Easter throw at the March general meeting was won by Rita Koval and netted $90.00 that will be used for supplies and material. A big “thank you” to all who contributed to this endeavor.

Literary Corner – Rafida Saadi

April is the cruelest month, breeding Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing Memory and desire, stirring Dull roots with spring rain. Winter kept us warm, covering Earth in forgetful snow, feeding A little life with dried tubers. Summer surprised us….

Those famous lines are from “The Wasteland” the most important poem of the 20th Century by T.S. Eliot. This Nobel Prize winner was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1934 but emigrated at 25 years young to England where he worked, married, published and died in 1965. April, the month of rebirth and rejuvenation, is surprisingly called at the start of his poem “the cruelest month.” Why we may ask? It stirs and mixes “memory and desire” and breathes life into earth with all the pains of birth. In another eye-catching contradictory image Eliot declares that “winter kept us warm” as it covered earth in “forgetful snow.” The poet feels that human beings sometimes find comfort in denial and escape. Living life to the fullest is painful and only for the brave. “A little life” is the easy way out. For those of us not ready for the Spring in our hearts, it is no surprise then that “ Summer surprised us…” I hope you enjoyed those beautiful words and thoughts from the pen of a master of poetry.
