Newsletter of Tennis Seniors New South Wales. February 2016
D ear Members,
Happy New Year to all
our members and I trust
2016 will bring good
health to all and I look forward to
seeing many of you on the court this
year.
We began the year in great style at
Shepparton, with NSW having 25
teams who all enjoyed the Teams’
Carnival experience. The weather was
kind to us on most days. We had 5
Gold medal winning teams, three
Women’s and two Men’s. In the
second week we had many winners in
the Championship Events, some of
whom won all events contested. See
the winners’ list on page 2, NSW
players are in BOLD.
Our Representative players did a
fantastic job overseas last year with
many winning World Titles and
showing they can match it with
players from any Country in the
World. I take this opportunity to wish
this year's Representative players the
best of luck and have a safe and
enjoyable trip.
We are very pleased with our
membership numbers, but I would ask
all members to keep encouraging new
players into our organisation. One
idea would be if all of us signed up
one new member this year it would
certainly boost our numbers.
It’s great to see the Country Circuit
starting with a successful NRT event
at Southern Districts. Participants
numbered 112, giving the tournament
added status for 2017 – so players will
gain more Australian ranking points.
Well done to the organisers for
attracting so many players, especially
TD Michael Jackson!
Many of us are now looking forward to the
Ulladulla tournament!
The Committee is always open to suggestions that
you may have. Also if there are any prospective
sponsors out there, it would be great to hear from
you.

Congratulations Mick!

Australian Individual Championships
Shepparton 2016
February 2016 2
S hepparton played host to a most interesting and varied Teams’ Carnival, where 89 teams competed in quite hot conditions for the first three days, with some early matches “heated out”! Two centres, Shepparton and Mooroopna provided us with magnificent,
well maintained grass courts where playing was a pleasure. In spite of some torn muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as some cramps from time to time, players battled it out for supremacy, as only we Seniors know how! New South Wales, with the biggest contingent, had players of all standards who had a great time in spite of not being in the winners’ list! The social aspects of the carnival are
legendary – so we encourage all our members to gather their friends together and head to Adelaide in 2017! The more teams competing, the easier it is to place them in compatible groups – standard-wise.
We did have some winning teams however, and they very proudly accepted their gold medals at the glittering Presentation Dinner on Friday night! Our Men’s 70/1 and 75s along with our Women’s 35-45/1 , 55/3 and 65/75-1. Several others were placed 2nd after leading all week! Tennis Seniors Australia handed out some fun awards for “badly completed” or “beautifully written” Results cards – by Steve Longworth, who did a great job on the microphone! All in all, it was a fabulous week, with our State Dinner being a wonderful start on the Monday night. It was a very colourful occasion, with lots of “islanders” wearing grass skirts, leis or sashes. Katrina O’Callaghan had creatively designed Miss Island sashes (Montague, Scotland, Cockatoo, Dumaresq and Garden) for her five team members, who also sported beautiful purple and silver tiaras. Stunningly beautiful! And from two of our Team Captains: This year’s Teams’ Carnival was slightly different to previous years in that it was held in a large regional Town rather than a capital City. We didn’t quite know what to expect, except that there would be great tennis and lots of laughs. The Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club was a great host with relaxing massages and deliciously fresh food for all the players to purchase for lunch. We started the week with a walk around the twilight markets buying spices and homemade brew for the week ahead, meeting other tennis players there as well. Competition began with some great tennis against some of the world champions there to prepare for the second week. We didn’t mind not winning all our sets but were thrilled with the great rallies and tough competition. The NSW State dinner was an Island theme and so one of our team mates who didn’t want to dress up initially, took control and found some cool sunnies with palm trees and a parrot on them and flashing LED lights and complete with island leis and grass skirts - we were “dressed to impress”. We had an absolute ball mingling and laughing the night away. Tuesday was quite warm getting to 37 degrees and once again the tennis was as hot as the temperature. Some age groups halted play waiting for the temperature to drop, we continued on. We found many coloured and unusual cows displayed all around Shepparton and in the park on the way to Mooroopna, where nearby we also found a funky coffee shop and an award winning bakery, and of course a boutique with some great clothes on sale. This was all in a day of a Teams’ Carnival week. Thursday was so unusual with the temperature dropping to 16 degrees and raining, some players resorting to wearing their jackets and even one was spotted wearing a featherdown jacket courtside to keep warm. What a week of varying temperatures !!! Wherever you went at night for dinner or lunch it was great to see and catch up with other tennis players from NSW or interstate. The week was completed with a Gala Dinner Dance which was one to remember. NSW once again had the most teams represented and although we are unable to win a trophy for this achievement, we all know the carnival week would not be the same without us. We danced the night away, friendships were rekindled and boogie moves were displayed. Let’s hope more NSW players are hearing about the great week that is the Teams’ Carnival and will join us in Adelaide in 2017. They’ll need to be quick to have their choice of apartments! Monique Spiller From Julie Pratt: As I collate my thoughts on the Australian Seniors’ Tennis Carnival, held in Shepparton 2016, I am looking back on many, many other wonderful times we have all experienced during the Australian Seniors’ Tennis Events held in January in all our great States of Australia. Fellow members, we should be so proud and thankful that we live in Australia being able to compete in this wonderful event every January.....Yes, we are all competitive and rightly so but at the end of the day, it is so fantastic that we have all enjoyed a great day of tennis without fear or favour. Shepparton is one of the extremely memorable tournaments for our 65/75 Women's team........Our team consisted of Margaret Wayte, Mary Gordon, Loretta Funnell, Denise Martin & myself. We have enjoyed playing together for many years and thought that this year would be very similar...Unfortunately, Denise & Loretta (one of our BEST 70+ Australian pairs) had to withdraw, through health problems, which left us in a very precarious position. We were very fortunate to learn that Mary Cox was coming down from Newcastle to enjoy the social atmosphere in Shep. Thank you so much Mary for coming to our rescue, I hope you enjoyed the experience as much as we enjoyed having you in our team. We were also very lucky to have our great friend, Enid Besant-Ryan join us and together Mary & Enid were fantastic team members, helping us to clinch the final against Victoria by the skin of our teeth. We are all looking forward to another fabulous carnival in South Australia, January 2017....

Charles Price, our one-time Secretary, had a very scary health experience late last year, and spent Xmas in hospital.
Here is a little “thank you” from him......
I was delighted to read your messages of support as I struggled to regain my health during the 56 days in hospital. I don't think I ever realised how much it means to have friends and relatives providing that encouragement. It gave me reason to remain positive and focus on getting well. It is now 12 days since they discharged me but my convalescence has still been a rocky road. Today I finally feel strong enough to sit at the computer and thank you and my other supporters. I owe a debt of gratitude to the wonderful team that has guided my diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation for at last the signs are looking good. I think back to your example (Robyn) of recovery and that is reassuring but I remember Arthur's comments about the part your outlook played in your recovery, so I am taking that advice to heart. It will be some time before I am able to wield a racquet again but I am determined to do that. Again, thank you so much for your support and the other Seniors who have also been in touch. What a wonderful group to belong to.
Best wishes to Elaine Brockett, who will undergo a hip operation on February 22. It has been a pretty painful time, as
she was participating in tennis events last year and in Shepparton in January. Elaine, you are to be admired for your
courage to keep going, no doubt spurred on by your group of friends in Tennis Seniors. What would we do without
them?
A friendly cheerio to some of our members suffering from the dreaded and often painful Melanoma.... Garry Potter,
Denise Martin and Mike Hook. All have had chunks of flesh removed, and are recovering slowly - sorry to hear that your
tennis exploits have been curtailed in this way, and hopefully, you’ll all recover in time to join us in Adelaide next year!
Hot off the press: On Saturday 13th, Geoff Mortimer needed treatment at hospital after falling off a ladder, and on
her return from a cruise, Colleen Allen fell down an escalator on Valentine’s Day and needed 7 stitches. (Are they
clumsy, or just getting old?) Best wishes you two, hope the injuries heal quickly!

A snippet from the State Dinner at Shepparton: When
he couldn’t find his Motel room key, who had to find
someone to let him share their room for the night?
Well, here’s a hint! He was in Mike Clayton’s team
and he shared Geoff Walsh’s bedroom!
What happened was: he locked his key in his room,
and he couldn’t retrieve it until after breakfast the next
day! (GS)

FIJI OPEN 2016
Wed May 25 — Sun May 29
From the Secretary’s Desk
W ell, Shepparton is behind us now, and I hope all those who played have completed the on-line survey to
give the City Council some well-deserved feedback!
What a fortnight it was! Heat, cold then rain!! Nearly Forty down to Sixteen degrees, and then quite a
few “rained out” Finals. It goes to show, there’s no telling what the weather will do!
Players were pretty happy with the venues, the services and the standard of tennis – not to mention the socialising that
took place after tennis! Please let us know if you have any bright ideas for improvements. We will listen, and pass it on.
Our Facebook page shows pics of some of the players who were in action, and there are more added when there is
another tournament running.
I had the pleasure late last year to nominate Julie Pratt for the “Player Recognition
Award” - which was presented to Julie at the Presentation Dinner in January, after
voting had taken place. Well-deserved Jules, well done! (Pictured here receiving
the award from TSA Vice President Enid Besant-Ryan).
May I take this opportunity to wish the following people a full recovery from their
health problems - Sara Goddard (broken wrist when at practice for Shepparton),
Loretta Funnell (DVT), Mike Hook (Melanoma - a protracted treatment time for
repeated occurrences since 2012), Denise Martin (Melanoma on her right leg). It
seems Julie Pratt has responded well to treatment on her ankle after stepping on a
ball during her match in Shepparton when leading 7-5 1-1 against Judy Hancy.
Congratulations to our two victorious Men’s teams in Shepp, and sorry I didn’t
have a team photo to include in Vetscore!

source of inspiration, as are the players of all
standards who turn up regularly and give it their

come.

7 February 2016
I don't remember who first told us about
Seniors Tennis. I do remember Tony Doyle
from Nepean signing our membership
forms and recommending it to us.
We played our first tournament at Nelson Bay in
December 2009 - what a great introduction to
Seniors! We were a bit nervous, particularly as
that afternoon we had to go to separate venues.
As she continues to do for everyone today,
Robyn Castle made us feel welcome and ensured
we met some of the people we would be playing
with. Within moments we were made to feel very
at home and encouraged to continue. (I think
Sandra and Maureen had us committing to
Cessnock tournament within the first half hour),
and I remember Geoff falling asleep at the dinner
table that night while everyone else kept
dancing!
We have never looked back from there - Seniors’
tennis has been an incredible experience for us -
from the many great people we have met to the
opportunity to see so many of our great country
tournaments, some interstate play, plus Norfolk
Island. While of course there are some people we
have become particularly close to over the years
- I'm so thrilled to say there are too many of them
to mention here - we haven't ever felt anything
New South Wales - Five Champion Teams
Membership Drive - still going!
Following the successful recruitment of players for the Nationals in Shepparton, we will
attempt to “up the ante” for Adelaide 2017.
We are asking our current members to ACTIVELY recruit! Ask players in your present
competition/s if they would like to experience the fun of the Teams’ Carnival, and tell them
how great it is!!!
They MAY put in their OWN team, or they can simply submit their name. The more teams,
the easier it is to create compatible groups! Make sure they understand this.
Generally speaking, the men are divided into 5-year age brackets, and the women, 10-years.
Now is the time to book accommodation, as it is filling FAST! If you need help, ring me!

Special message from TSA Executive:
The Executive have expressed
concerns to the ITF about the
security situation in Turkey,
where the World Super Seniors
Titles are scheduled to be held
in October.
The response we have received
from the ITF reads as follows:
“I can inform you that we are
about to undertake a thorough
security review, in collaboration
with a specialist company, and
if as a result of that exercise it is
determined that our events
cannot or should not take place
as planned or that additional
security measures are required
then we will be sure to follow
up as required including
communicating with all
interested parties”. We will
obviously update players as
soon as any further information
is received from the ITF, or
from TA whom we have also
approached for their official
view.
If necessary, we will extend the
nomination closing date beyond
1st April.

A snippet from Northbridge T C
Nine NTC Members compete in the Australian Seniors Titles
T his year’s Australian Seniors’ Championships were played on the grass courts of Shepparton in Victoria. It was a
great venue for a fabulous event with 24 grass courts at the Shepparton Lawn Tennis Club (below) and an
additional 32 grass courts at the nearby Mooroopna Tennis Club and adjacent cricket oval. The oval was set up
and marked out for 15 grass courts. It looked great, but the bounce was somewhat unpredictable causing the
smarter and more mobile players to take everything on the volley! ….. And I mean everything!
As well as Australians, there were Internationals like Lorne Main from Canada, who was in the Canadian Davis Cup team
back in the 1950’s. He had great stories to tell about when he played against the likes of Lew Hoad, Rod Laver and Ken
Rosewall. He has been World Champion in every age category since he was 35 years old, winning more World
Championships than anyone else. He is now 85, adding the Shepparton Men’s 85 Singles title to his list of achievements.
Similarly in the ladies, Carol Campling has won many World Championships, this year winning the Women’s 70 Singles,
Doubles and Mixed titles in Shepparton. Amazingly, Carol and her opponent Margaret Harris both played at Wimbledon
together and in the Australian Open when they were 18 years old! Carol reached the last 16 in the Ladies Doubles at
Wimbledon and the Quarter Finals of the Australian Open in the same event, both with her sister. Her sister went on to win 4
Grand Slam Doubles Titles and is currently ranked #1 in the
World in the >70’s, residing in France.
In amongst these great players were 9 members of Northbridge
TC, many of whom played both the Teams and Individual
events with varying degrees of success. They included Yannick
Aubree, Mick Dunn, Ian Fisher, Peter Musgrove, Owan
Ratsoongnoen, Ken Solomons, Graeme Sticka, Gordon
Waygood and myself, Clive Wilkinson.
My “claim to fame” was in the Consolation Event (first round
losers!!), where I got to the final losing the 2nd set Tie Breaker
19-17 having lost the first set 6-2 to Reg Baxter.
Cheers to all! Clive
G ordon Waygood of Northbridge Tennis Club was entered by Club
President, Clive Wilkinson (unbeknown to Gordon) into the Tennis
NSW / APIA International Legends Competition. It was for people
who had done a tremendous amount of work for their club and for
tennis in general. There were to be 4 winners from all over NSW and I was very
pleased to announce that Gordon was one of them! Gordon was interviewed (pictured) as one of the winners and was then asked to
represent the four winners to deliver an appreciation speech to the organisers
which was well received. Gordon was the only winner from Sydney as the others
were from Orange, Coffs Harbour and Kendall (near Port Macquarie). It was a
great prize with 2 nights stay in the luxurious Pullman Hotel in the city (with

O n behalf of our team we
all thoroughly enjoyed
our Teams event at
Shepparton and would
do it all again. We found the
facilities excellent, the grass courts
at Shepparton were beaut,
Mooroopna more trying but made
you try harder, fierce competition
but sporting and friendly.
Congratulations to the Shepparton
team in doing a great job. We love
Shepparton, a truly great Australian
country town.

My team won the women’s over 55
section 2 and I would love for my
team mates Jhil Taylor, Chris
Burns, Ellen Partridge, Colleen
Allen and Denise Rowsell to know
how much I appreciated them all in
Shepparton. Susan Ayres.
35 ladies. Our team ranged from 39
to 67. We went thru undefeated,
beating Victoria in the final. We had
two players Fiona Roseby and
Belinda Barrett as debutantes for
whom it was a great thrill to win
their first ever teams’ event. Well
done to all ladies Leanne Swaysland,
Suzi Ellis, Kerry Ballard, Rosie
Davies, Belinda Barrett and Fiona
Roseby. Thanks for a great week.

Shepparton hit us like a blast of hot
air after the cool of the preceding
week in Sydney and all we could do
was drink! What a great excuse 10
to do so at every opportunity.
Not only was the club and the grass
at both venues impressive, but so
was the level of support shown by
the government for the sport.
They had to cope with all, heat,
wind, wet and cold. And those of
us who could not cope with some
of that were very grateful for the
presence of the massage tent with
the competent ladies who enabled
all their customers (including
myself) to keep on playing.
All in all it was a truly mooooving
experience. Clare Wagemans

Athol Robins won the Tony
Robinson medal by one point from
new player Doug Pareezer and both
want to play at Adelaide in the 75's
next year.
Our 70's Men's Team enjoyed their
nightly swim and red wine with the
owners at the Tower motel.
Athol was nicknamed 'Scrooge'
because he didn't order a meal at
The Shepparton Club, instead he
ate whatever the other guys left on
their plates. Tony Robinson
We were treated to beautiful soft
grass the whole week. My feet
didn't suffer at all. I was totally
impressed with the courts on the
oval. The Shepparton crew did a
fabulous job getting those courts
ready.
A wonderful week overall, and
special to be in the country having
a country club run it. Thanks
Shepparton, Janet McCoy
Peg Hoysted: I was not planning to
go this year, but when asked, I did
not hesitate to say “YES”! I am
very glad I did, because I just loved
Shepparton!
playing with all the girls in the
team, who were so good to me! I
really felt included in all the
teams’ activities. I was helped in
acquiring accommodation, and a
ride to and from Shepparton in a
beautiful “limo” belonging to
Bruce Richardson. He was a
perfect gentleman, and a very
competent driver. The car was so
comfy I didn’t even get a sore back
after 8 hours in the passenger seat!
Who was the male who went to
tennis one day without wearing his
undies?
A great event and thanks to
Victoria for " borrowing " a few
players from Thailand! Gave me
the opportunity to catch up with
childhood friends that I used to
play with in under-10 tennis at the
Royal Bangkok Sports Club. The
Thai players had a great time and
are available to be "borrowed"
again in future! Mike Clayton
Families were well represented in
Shepparton! One of these had not
2, but THREE members! The
children of Barb and Ken Allsopp -
Gary, Elaine (Brockett) and
Lorraine (Spinks); plus 2 Sulters -
Ron (Dad) and Gary (son); and
then twins, Monique (Spiller) and
Regina (Schlemmer); brother and
sister, Brad Middleton and Leanne
(Swaysland); then Mother and
daughter, Sandra Allen and
Kendall (Oates).
Of course, there are also MANY
couples, some of whom have MET
through Tennis Seniors! One BIG
happy family, eh?

Congrats to Michael Jackson for a very well-run and enjoyable tournament for all concerned. A tasty barbecue lunch was prepared by Rosina Anson and her helpers on both days, which was most appreciated. The rain delayed play in the Singles on Saturday morning, but after that, all events were uninterrupted. Players from as far away as Taree and Old Bar enjoyed “mixing it” with those from Wollongong, Eglinton, Cessnock, Canberra, Emu Heights, Glenmore Park, Rankin Park, Queanbeyan and many parts of Sydney. Jo, Rebekha and Cathie made it an ideal opportunity to “catch up” since they all live far away from each other!
It’s lovely to see such friendships developing as a result of our tournaments. Myra, Chris and Louisa too! Plus, it was wonderful to accept many new members
into our ranks! Many thanks to Steven Thorne for “putting it out there” to attract many new players. Check out the pics on our “Tennis Seniors newsouthwales” Facebook page!
