An Easy Way to Create Lifetime Income and

SAVE On TAXES

If you are looking for a way to create income for yourself now or in the future, there are two charitable gifts you should consider.

A charitable gift annuity, funded with your low performing stock or CDs, can provide you with a charitable deduction and fixed income for life. Rates are based on your age and a portion of your payment could be tax free. Please contact us to view an illustration with your rate and potential income.

Creating a charitable remainder trust is another way to receive a tax deduction and income. When you transfer your appreciated stock or real estate to fund a charitable remainder trust, you can also avoid capital gains tax on the sale of your assets. The trust will sell the assets tax free and then use the invested proceeds to pay you income for your life. And your income could potentially grow with growth in the trust assets.

To learn more about charitable life income plans and their benefits, please contact Kathy Reed, Director of Major and Planned Giving at (585) 258-0319 or at [email protected]. Or visit wxxilegacy.org, use our gift calculator and watch video presentations on gift vehicles.

deAR FRiends,Please join me in congratulating WXXI’s Beth Adams, Alex Crichton, and Lisa Famiglietti, who were all award recipients at the Rochester Media Association Awards Banquet last month. Beth, local host of Morning Edition, received the Impact Award, which honors individuals with distinguished careers in local media who have made substantial contributions to the community. She was in good company as Rich Funke, former News10NBC anchor and Jack Garner, critic and columnist for the Democrat and Chronicle, were also Impact Award winners that evening. Alex, local host of All Things Considered, received the Established Media Professional Award and Lisa, our Education and Multimedia Producer received the Young Media Professional Award.

I am also pleased to share that Reachout Radio, our 24-hour reading radio service for people who are print-handicapped, received the 2012 Program of the Year Award from the International Association of Audio Information Services (IAAIS) for an episode of ViewPoints. Kudos to the show’s hosts and producers, husband and wife team Peter Torpey and Nancy Goodman Torpey.

Summer is finally upon us and I look forward to seeing you at the many Rochester Summer Festivals. You can find the WXXI Booth at the Corn Hill Arts Festival, Park Avenue Summer Arts Fest, and at the Clothesline Arts Festival! Stop by and say hello, pick up some WXXI items and let us know what your favorite programs are.

By the way, production of Downton Abbey Season 4 is finished. Mark your calendars now – the WXXI premiere of Season 4 is on January 5, 2014.

As members, you all make this programming possible - Thank you!

Kudos to innoVAtion tRAilWXXI’s Innovation Trail’s “Health Care Innovation” series took home an Award of Excellence for the “Best News Series” at the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association awards ceremony in June. The series included features on telemedicine and e-records. Contributing reporters included Marie Cusick, Ryan Delaney, Kate O’Connell, Matt Richmond, and Joanna Richards. “Investigating IDAs,” a series of reports that investigated how industrial development agencies (IDAs) spend New Yorkers’ tax dollars, received a Special Mention in the “Best Enterprise Reporting” category. Contributing reporters included Emma Jacobs, Daniel Robison, Ryan Delaney, Matt Richmond, and Marie Cusick.

These awards come on the heels of Innovation Trail’s Editor Matthew Leonard and Facilitator Juan Vazquez receiving the RocCity Rising “Established Leader Award” in recognition of their contributions to the entrepreneurial community in Rochester through their work on The Innovation Trail. The RocCity Coalition is a collaboration of Rochester’s young professional organizations.

The Innovation Trail is a collaboration between six upstate New York public media outlets, led by WXXI, along with WBFO/WNED, WRVO, WSKG, WMHT and North Country Public Radio. To learn more, visit: InnovationTrail.org.

Tune in for a behind-the curtain look at what it takes to put on a major Broadway production. The documentary follows the development of a single production number in the musical: the tuneful and rhythmic “It’s the Hard-Knock Life,” defiantly belted out by the orphans. The program follows the young cast’s journey to Opening Night.

Groundwork: Democracy Close to Home airs Sunday, July 7 at 9 p.m.At a time of political gridlock and polarization at the national level, Groundwork explores the tone and flavor of democratic action in towns and cities, where one’s antagonist is not an opposing talking head or a politician from a state of a different “color,” but a neighbor.

BURN: An Energy Journal — The Switch airs Sunday, July 14 at 9 p.m.Our nation’s power grid, the patchwork system that transmits and distributes electricity from plants to consumers, is aging and stretched to capacity — especially in summer months when users face triple-digit temperatures, violent storms, and power outages. BURN examines the state of America’s electric power grid and the science needed to modernize it.

As a friend and colleague, Sid was very helpful in the early development and funding of Art of the Song Creativity Radio. It’s unusual for radio hosts to sit down and talk on air about the passions that got us into our programs in the first place. With Sid we found a friend and mentor as producers and as musicians. As executive producer of NPR’s Beale Street Caravan, Sid Selvidge was a walking, talking lexicon of the musical history found in Memphis, TN. We had the pleasure of interviewing Sid about his music and the music of Memphis in 2008. We’ve taken that Art of the Song episode, added some new music and previously unheard portions of the interview, and created a special one-hour tribute to music and legacy of Sid Selvidge.

Plus Lasser will play portions of interviews with Weill and three of his lyricists – Ira Gershwin, Ogden Nash, and Langston Hughes.

The lights dim and flecks of black and white dance on the screen. Wild expressions and bordered text slides convey romance and tragedy, wreathed in a live musical score that slides you forward in your seat as tension mounts. On Friday, July 19, rediscover the wonder of cinema’s origins when the Little presents the Andrew Alden Ensemble accompanying Nosferatu and Night of the Living Dead.

The Andrew Alden Ensemble is a chamber music group from Boston’s Berklee College of Music whose goal is to bring forth new music for chamber music and film. You will pick up hints of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, David Lang, Radiohead, The Velvet Underground and Krzysztof Penderecki as they form the musical vehicle for these horror classics.

theAtRes 3, 4, And 5 open with enhAnced quAlityThere will be significantly upgraded visual and audio crispness when Little theatres 3, 4 and 5 reopen on July 5. After two weeks of darkness while new projection technology was installed, they will be filled with digital cinema’s brilliant glow. This milestone represents the first completed phase in the Little’s Screen Saver campaign. Film distributors will stop sending movies on film at the end of the year and any cinema that doesn’t convert to digital will close. We still need to convert Little theatre 1 so please consider donating to the campaign. Learn how at thelittle.org. photo: tony barbagallo

Id SIGnSYSTemS Inc. is a design/build architectural sign company serving regional, national, and international clients. They are proud that the manufacturing of a distinguished scope of work takes place at their Atlantic Avenue location. Their focus includes campus, health, and retail customers. Regional highlights include the 9-foot LED “RIT” rooftop lettering visible from the air, URMC’s Wilmot Cancer Center floral art walls, and the 30-foot “GATE 2” signage at Watkins Glen Racetrack.

As a Rochester Top 100 company for the last two years, CEO Katrina Beatty notes that id SIGNSYSTEMS has recently been named the preferred interior sign manufacturer for all North American locations of Swedish clothing retailer H&M. “In addition, we are a NY state recognized Women’s Business Enterprise (WBE).”

President Paul Dudley suggested the rationale to partner with WXXI: “We are community focused. our clients include many of Rochester’s most respected institutions and businesses, and WXXI is an important part of this community. Decision makers and industry innovators like us make WXXI a part of their everyday listening experience, so we are speaking directly to our clients and potential clients. Incidentally, our staff is as diverse as WXXI programming. someone could be listening to ‘science Friday’ (WXXI-AM 1370) in one room, while another is tuned in to WRuR’s ‘World Café’ (FM 88.5, M-F, 2-4p). We can also admit to some late work nights with Terry Gross, host of ‘Fresh Air’ (AM 1370, M-F, 7-8p)!”

Id SIGNSYSTEMS is involved with architects and design firms and has started a number of Lunch and Learn programs to introduce their clients to new technologies such as solar signs, and legislation changes such as the newly updated ADA regulations.
