Our HistoryPI LAMBDA LAMBDA CHAPTER

On Friday evening, November 17, 1911, three Howard University undergraduate students, with the assistance of their faculty adviser, gave birth to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. This event occurred in the office of biology Professor Ernest E. Just, the faculty adviser, in the Science Hall (now known as Thirkield Hall). The three liberal arts students were Edgar A. Love, Oscar J. Cooper, and Frank Coleman. From the initials of the Greek phrase meaning “Friendship Is Essential To The Soul,” the name Omega Psi Phi was derived. The phrase was selected as the motto with Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance and Uplift as our cardinal principles.

Following the spirit of Omega, the Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter was chartered on January 24, 2004, in Prince William County, Virginia with 29 members. Over the past 14 years, the chapter has grown to more than 200 members dedicated to support local humanitarian activities such as the Charles R. Drew Blood Drive, the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society (Relay for Life), the NAACP and the Omega Game Day Give Back Project with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We celebrate our 14th anniversary as a testament to the power, vision, and commitment of our charter members. The Brothers of PLL have made a firm commitment toward building bridges of goodwill throughout the region.

In our 14-year history, PLL has emerged as an award-winning chapter at all levels in the fraternity. In 2006, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2015 & 2017, the Third District recognized PLL as its Social Action Chapter of the Year. In July of 2016, the Chapter was honored for the third time as the Fraternity’s International Chapter of the Year at the fraternity’s Conclave in Las Vegas, Nevada. This calendar year marks the second time the chapter received the prestigious first place award for the Third District’s best Youth Mentorship Program - a singularly significant achievement. Other awards and recognitions include; Dale City Independence Day Parade Chairman’s Trophy (2011, 2014), American Diabetes Association Plaque for Top Club/Organization Fundraising Team (2010, 2011), Prince William County, Virginia NAACP’s “Giving Back Flame Award (2008) and “Visionary Award” (2014), Manassas Park Education Foundation Plaque (2007), Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Game Day. Give Back Project Fundraising with St Jude Children’s Research Hospital First Place (2017 & 2018) and Second Place (2016) and numerous Certificates and Letters of Appreciations.

PLL welcomes the often challenging – but always gratifying-work of helping others in need. As Omega men, we feel the obligation to uplift fellow members of society and view it as an honor to render service to mankind. Like the knights of old, we figuratively wear our armor and bare our shield to serve mankind. Additionally, our community service support includes: Feed the Hungry at Hilda Barge Homeless Shelter, Omega U Mentoring Program (18 Schools and 140 students in Prince William County, Virginia), Clothing Drives, Toy Drives, Ring the Bell for The Salvation Army, Prince William Country Youth Mentorship Program, Feed the Hungry with First Mount Zion Baptist Church, Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets, Action in Community Through Service (ACTS) Food Bank, Meet and Greet the Veterans at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1503, Hospital visit to see Veterans and Ezra Nehemiah Solomon (ENS) Youth Mentoring organization.

Our fraternity, “Omega Psi Phi” continues to flourish, mainly because Founders Love, Cooper, Coleman and Just were men of the very highest ideals and intellect. The Founders selected and attracted men of similar ideals and characteristics. It is not by accident that many of America’s great black men are/were Omega Men. To this date, there are very few Americans whose lives have not been touched by a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. The Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter continues the proud tradition of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift and will continue to serve the Prince William County and the surrounding areas for the next century and beyond.

Talent Hunt History The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Talent Hunt Idea was created in the Fraternity's Sixth District (North and South Carolina) in 1945, and the first District Talent Hunt Program was held in Charlotte, North Carolina, on April 19, 1946. The need for such a program was born out of the unequal opportunity afforded to some American youths to develop and give expression to their talents.

The Talent Hunt Idea has become one of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity' s National Projects with all graduate chapters mandated to conduct an Annual Talent Hunt Program. On the Local and District levels, the project is competitive. At the National level, the program is demonstrative. The National Program is made up of District Winners, who by their talent, diligence, ability, and potential, appear as guests of the Fraternity. At this stage of our growth, the Talent Hunt Idea is proceeding on the National level along three lines:

1) At each session of the Grand Conclave and International Leadership Conference, a Talent Hunt demonstration is presented to the public.

2) In addition, Omega is also interested in what it calls a "Fundamental Search for Talent." Here the Fraternity hopes to develop the process and resources through which it can help, discover and provide assistance, as may be needed, to young people who have shown and possess talents of outstanding and exceptional quality.

3) In our projected planning, we hope to further encourage the contestants of our Talent Hunt Programs by recommending them to our chapters and other organizations throughout the United States for presentations in their respective communities.

It is significant to note that the National Talent Hunt, involving all of the Fraternity's twelve districts, is the outgrowth of those participants who became winners in the District Talent Hunt contests. From this grand idea and the efforts of many dedicated brothers to the cause of talented youth, we celebrate seventy-three years of progress and fulfillment knowing that we have provided significant contributions to music and theatrical arts. Without this setting, some of them would not have received this well-deserved exposure and others might not have benefited from the numerous awards and scholarships that were presented to them.

Talent Hunt Contestants have appeared on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour, the Apollo Theater, Radio City Music Hall, Philadelphia Academy of Music, Philadelphia Civic Center, New York City and Washington, D.C. Centers for the Performing Arts, the Eastman Theater, and other notable venues.

Born: Fairfax, VA Early life and Family: Bubbly, I grew up in a close-knit household, with my brother being my best friend. Much of my childhood has been surrounded by religious values and traditions, as I have grown up, and am currently, Christian. Many of my memories stem from church events I have attended, and moments with my family, who I consider my ride or dies.

Education: I have attended Woodbridge Senior High School from Sept. 2015, to this upcoming May 2019. Currently a senior (yay!), I graduate high school on May 31st, 2019! Previous to high school, I attended Lake Ridge Middle School and Old Bridge Elementary School.

Hobbies and Interests: In school, I am involved in Tri M Music Honor Society, National Honor Society, and Delta Epsilon Phi, also known as German Honor Society, and participate in a variety of activities with the organizations, such as Multicultural Night, event planning, and Sing Your Face Off, an entertainment night. I volunteer at Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center as a Junior Volunteer Lead. Similar to a supervisor position, I am responsible for leading a team of about 7- 9 people. My duties include delegating tasks, communicating with volunteers about shifts and absences, volunteering in the hospital in different areas such as the emergency room, nurse’s stations, Pre Op/ Surgical Unit, front desks, etc. My duties also include working/ helping out with different events, namely luncheons, celebratory events, health fairs (specifically, educating the importance of healthy eating to families, and conducting vision screenings), and conduct interviews as a part of a team with my manager. At my church, First Mount Zion Baptist Church, I participate in Youth Ministry, and Voices of Zion, our Youth Choir. As an active participant in Youth Ministry, I have participated in several events, such as Youth Lock-Ins, Retreats, First Friday Monthly Meetings/ discussions, food drives, and volunteering at a nursing home. In Voices of Zion, we meet twice a month for song practice and perform every 3rd Sunday of each month. I have participated in a separate service project with Voices of Zion, volunteering at a nursing home with them as well. Employed as a cashier at Panera Bread, I work on the weekends! As well, I participate in the top 2 choirs at my school, Woodbridge Singers, and Woodbridge Chorale. We have hosted a VARIETY of events, including singing at middle schools, performing concerts, being filmed by a television station, participating in All-County Chorus, auditioning (and making it into) VMEA Senior Honor Choir at Longwood University, putting on a concert for elementary school children, performing a concert with elementary and middle school children, Thomas Dale Competition in Richmond, Christopher Newport University Invitational and vocal clinic, and more!

Accomplishments/Awards so far: Membership in National Honor Society. Tri M Music Honor Society, and German Honor Society; Advanced Placement English Language and Composition 11 student of the year (2017-2018 school year); German 3 student of the year (2017- 2018 school year); Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter of Omega Psi Phi District Essay Contest Winner (Nov 2018).

Future Plans: I have committed to Winston Salem State University, where I will major in Psychology on the Pre Medical track, and minor in music. Upon completion of undergrad, and contingent on my MCAT score, I will enroll in Medical School, eying Meharry Medical College, Charles R. Drew School of Medicine, or Howard University School of Medicine, with my ultimate goal to earn an MD in Psychiatry, and work to promote reform in the Criminal Justice system through establishing music programs as a form of therapy to inmates.

Kyra Ann McCallAge: 17

Born: Fayetteville, North Carolina Early life and Family: Growing up, I believe I am blessed to have two parents who support me and my dreams, as well as two brothers who are always there for me.

Education: I started my education at a private school until around the age of seven, where I later enrolled in a public elementary school (Anne E. Moncure). I attended Shirley C. Heim Middle School, where I participated in many clubs and tried my hand in sports. I participated in plays and musicals that would showcase my love for dancing. During the spring I participated in track, where I ran on relay teams, hurdled, long jumped, etc. Once I graduated from middle school, I enrolled at North Stafford High School where I am currently a student. North Stafford has allowed me to be an active student in my community. I was the junior captain of the dance team, a runner on both, spring and winter track team, and head manager for our football team. Currently, I am the senior class Vice President and a leader in Renaissance.

Hobbies and Interests: Some of my hobbies include journaling and designing. Whenever I feel powerless, or my thoughts and feelings are not heard, journaling allows those emotions to reach a smaller audience in my head. As far as designing, I like to decorate and style practically anything, from clothes to interior styling.

Accomplishments/Awards so far: Because of dance I have been able to make many accomplishments and receive many awards. My most proud and recent accomplishment would be attending the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre summer intensive for three years in a row. Being selected out of thousands of applicants has been a tremendous honor.

Academically I’ve received, an outstanding student award, an honor award, and a 3.8 or above award.

Future Plans: I plan to attend Penn State University (main campus) in the fall of 2019. I will pre-major in communications with a focus study in Broadcast Journalism. I also plan to keep up with my dance training by trying out for the nationally recognized dance team, the Penn State Lionettes. Once I graduate, I hope to enter into sports commentating, then later branching out into different fields of interest.

Abigail “Abbey” RamirezAge: 16

Born: Woodbridge, VA

Early Life: At the age of two, Abbey was already shooting for the stars, as she thoroughly enjoyed belting out recent American Idol Winner, Carrie Underwood’s hit, “Before He Cheats,” back in 2005. Music has always inspired Abbey, and at a very young age, she was determined to become ‘the next Carrie Underwood.’ As the years progressed, she began to take an interest in songwriting. Abbey now has countless notebooks filled with hundreds of songs. Abbey is the middle child of three to parents, R. Mark Ramirez (Army Protocol Specialist,) and Kristen Ramirez (Music Teacher and Woodbridge Senior Center Assistant Cook.) Her brothers, Gabriel and Jackson, are in 11th and 7th grades, respectively, and are lifelong “Abbey” fans.

Education: Abbey is currently a sophomore at Charles J. Colgan High School, enrolled in the choral program of their Center for Performing Arts program. She attended Lake Ridge Elementary School, Lake Ridge Middle School, and Woodbridge High School prior. Abbey began to acquire her fan base and capture the hearts of listeners as she entered singing competitions and performed her original works at open mic events. In 2017, she debuted her original song, “Snowglobe,” at a school talent show, which touched the hearts and lives of many people. After winning that talent show, she was dubbed, “The Next Nashville Country Singer and American Idol Superstar,” by one of the judges, who, incidentally, was the school principal. Abbey currently sings in the Colgan Women’s Camerata Choir and was honored to sing a solo in the Colgan Choir Fall Showcase. More recently, she was selected to sing the introduction to the iconic Mariah Carey song, “All I Want for Christmas,” at Colgan’s Holiday Concert.

Hobbies and Interests: Abbey loves to sing! Singing and songwriting are two of Abbey’s favorite things to do. She enjoys playing the clarinet, as well as teaching it. She composes and arranges music, including the accompaniments to some of her more recent songs. Along with her musical hobbies, Abbey likes to paint, draw, and read medieval novels. She spends time writing stories and playing Minecraft, as she is fascinated with the world of possibility through creativity. Abbey participates in physical activities such as soccer, marching band, and tap dance.

Accomplishments/Awards: Member of Tri-Music Honor Society and the award winning Pride of Colgan Marching Band, 2019 PWCS All-District Choir (10th in rank,) 2017-18 Woodbridge SHS’s Class of 2021 Class President, 2018 Woodbridge SHS Sing Your Face Off Champion, 2017 Woodbridge’s Got Talent Finalist, 2017 Lake Ridge MS Talent Show Champion, 2016 Lake Ridge MS Talent Show 2nd Place, 2016-2019 PWCS All-County Bands, and 2017-2018 PWCS All-District Band.

Future Plans: Abbey plans to major in Music Business/Industry and minor in Vocal Performance. She has not yet selected a college but is sure she will attend one. She looks forward to furthering her musical career, and hopes to one day obtain the title of “Superstar.”

Norvin Kodell West, Jr.Age: 16

Born: Manassas, Virginia

Early Life: Norvin West Jr. is the son of Norvin Sr. and Jennifer West. He has two older sisters, Margaret and Jazmine, and an older brother, Robby. He developed a love for music and learning at a young age as he was in youth choirs and often learned with his sisters before he was school aged. For as long as he can remember he has been inquisitive, observant, and rhythmic which is a part of the reason music comes to him so naturally.

Education: Norvin started his schooling in preschool at the Merit School. He then moved on to Ashland Elementary where he excelled academically. Next, he moved on to Benton Middle School where he discovered his passion for piano and music. Today, he is a sophomore in the Center for Fine and Performing Arts program at Colgan High School with a concentration in instrumental music on the bassoon.

Hobbies and Interests: Although Norvin learned the bassoon (and clarinet) through band, he actually taught himself the piano during 8th grade and the summer going into 9th grade often playing for hours at a time trying to figure out how it worked. Outside of music, Norvin plays strong safety on Varsity Football at Colgan. He also has a deep passion for science as he is always searching for internships and summer opportunities specifically in neuroscience and psychology. He participated in a biomedical program at NOVA Community College in 2017 and hopes to be selected into a neuroscience internship at George Mason University this summer. He is in multiple youth mentorship programs. Finally, he participates on the Board of the Student Council Association at his school, tutors peers and plans to join the Math, Music, and National Honor Societies next school year.

Accomplishments/Awards: Academically, Norvin has received a Colgan HS Academic Letter for the 2017-18 school year and currently has a 4.11 GPA. In football, Norvin received the Colgan HS Freshmen Football Defensive MVP Award in 2017-18, Colgan HS JV Football Defensive MVP Award in 2018-19, and a Colgan HS Football Varsity Letter for the 2018-19 season. In band, he is 1st Chair in his school’s top band (Wind Symphony), he placed 3rd Chair in All-County Band for bassoon in 2017 and 2018, and 4th Chair in All-District Band for bassoon in 2017.

Future Plans: Throughout the rest of high school, Norvin plans on creating a tutoring business, wants to make All-State Band the next two years, attract college recruits in football, and pursue his unique passion for science. His college aspiration is to go to Harvard University to primarily study medicine/neuroscience and minor in instrumental music. He ultimately wants to become a renowned neurosurgeon, establish a top hospital, and create a boarding school that nurtures kids’ extraordinary talents. He is committed to a future that helps to improve the lives of others and this world.
