ABOUT MHA-NYC

DEAR FRIENDS

Thank you so much for joining us tonight. Your commitment, your passion and your partnership has the potential to help millions live a life of mental wellbeing.

Tonight we salute and honor each and every one of the “Many Faces of Mental Health.” You will hear some

very courageous voices from the stage and at your tables. But the truth is that the many faces of mental health are everywhere. They are our colleagues, our neighbors, our friends, our family. One in every four adults will experience a mental health issue in any given year. Think of that, one in four.

At MHA-NYC we envision a society where all people can achieve mental wellbeing with dignity and respect through accessible, high-quality services and supports when, where and how they want them. And we work tirelessly to achieve that goal.

Our organization has local roots and national reach, helping more than one million people across the nation cope with mental and behavioral health issues each year. We provide state-of-the-art services through public partnerships with the city, state and federal government. MHA-NYC’s Center for Policy, Advocacy and Education has successfully put mental health on every legislative agenda in City Hall and Albany, and is increasingly leading the charge for reform in Washington, D.C. We ask you to please join us, not just tonight, but more importantly after the evening has come to a close. Let’s work together to give voice to all those who need us, and to all those who struggle. Let’s support the innovative leaders who are making a difference and the services and technologies that are bringing emotional wellness to our communities.

Think of all we can accomplish. Together.

Enjoy the evening.

GISELLE STOLPER, ED. M. KEVIN DANEHYPresident and CEO Chairman, Board of DirectorsMHA-NYC MHA-NYC

Through dedicated service, advocacy, and education, the Mental Health Association of New York City identifies unmet needs and develops culturally sensitive programs to improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities nationwide while promoting the importance of mental health and wellness.

For more than 50 years, our work with people impacted by behavioral health challenges has been consistent, responsive, and expansive, and has distinguished us as a leader in the field in New York City and nationwide. In times of personal crisis and widespread disaster, MHA-NYC has utilized cutting edge technology to help people access the care they need where, how, and when they need it.

MHA-NYC’s programs and advocacy have touched the lives of more than one million Americans and we are still growing. Whether we are running Resource Centers to help reduce the isolation and stress of those coping with emotional and behavioral difficulties; securing transitional housing for adults with mental illness or substance abuse issues; providing teens with GED and classes and internship placements; or managing the National Suicide Prevention Hotline, MHA-NYC is making critically-needed mental health services available to those who need them most.

BILL RITTER was named co-anchor of Eyewitness News at 6 p.m. in February of 2001. Ritter, who has been the co-anchor of the 11 p.m. news since September 1999, is also a correspondent for the ABC News program “20/20.” He started at Eyewitness News in the summer of 1998 as a weekend anchor.

For Eyewitness News, Bill traveled to Israel the week before the start of the war in Iraq, to find out how Israelis and Palestinians were preparing for a possible military conflict 500 miles from their land.

Bill has investigated drug use among teenaged Orthodox Jews in Brooklyn, and looked into problems with the dramatic increase in the number of building scaffoldings in New York. Bill also covers fire safety and prevention for Eyewitness News, and hosts the annual “Operation 7 Save A Life” a special ad campaign. Bill has climbed the Empire State Building, tagging along with the man who repairs and replaces the broadcast antennas on top of New York’s tallest skyscraper. And, for the first time on live television, Bill was tested for prostate cancer. As part of the test, Bill also interviewed New York’s most famous prostate cancer patient: former Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Bill also writes a daily column, Behind the News with Bill Ritter, which previews the 11 pm edition of Eyewitness News.

Before joining Eyewitness News, Bill worked at ABC News in January 1993 as co-anchor of “Good Morning America Sunday.” Since then he has covered dozens of important news stories for “Good Morning America,” including the crash of TWA Flight 800, the death of Princess Diana, the criminal and civil trials of O.J. Simpson, the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing and the devastating Midwest floods of 1997. He’s also taken an in-depth look at drugs and teenagers, the alarming increase in “budget” plastic surgeries and the emotional consequences of so-called “blended” or step families.

MC: Bill RitterPrior to joining ABC, Ritter was a reporter for KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, from June to December 1992, where his “Up Front” segment headlined the station’s successful 9 p.m. weeknight news broadcast.

Previously, the Los Angeles native reported on the Rodney King trial and the subsequent Los Angeles riots for the Fox Television Network. From August 1991 through February 1992, Ritter also served as a reporter for the Fox Network’s nationally syndicated show Entertainment Daily Journal (E.D.J.); and from February 1990 to August 1991 was an investigative reporter for KTTV-TV (Fox Television) in Los Angeles. He also was an anchor for the station’s Gulf War coverage.

While serving as a business, then investigative reporter for KNSD-TV (NBC affiliate) in San Diego from February 1987 to January 1990, Ritter, known for his white-collar crime investigations, captured four Emmy Awards.

In 1987, he won Emmy awards for his reports exposing a safety scandal involving killer whales and their trainers at San Diego’s Sea World of California. Ritter also was named NBC Affiliate Reporter of the Year in 1987 and 1988.

Ritter began his career in print journalism in 1972. He served as a reporter, then business editor, of the San Diego County edition of The Los Angeles Times from February 1984 to January 1987. In 1984, he won The Los Angeles Times Editorial Award for uncovering a $200 million broker fraud in San Diego. He also worked as a reporter and editor for the San Diego Business Journal from June 1980 to January 1984.

Additionally, Ritter served as chairman of Crash, Inc., a non-profit drug education and prevention organization in San Diego, from 1980 to 1990. He also was on the San Diego State University Business School advisory board in 1984 and 1985. Ritter attended San Diego State University, majoring in accounting and economics.

SARAH VANDER SCHAAFF is a freelance writer whose January 2016 personal essay in The Washington Post, “Obsessive-compulsive disorder nearly ruined her life,” began a worldwide dialogue about mental health. Writing about her own struggles with anxiety and OCD, Sarah tapped into an experience privately shared by many who face daily battles with worry in their otherwise “ordinary” lives.

As a third-generation writer, Sarah’s work has appeared in The Washington Post’s Health and On Parenting sections, Yahoo Parenting, The New York Times Motherlode, Huffington Post Education, Slate’s Double X and Broadway World. Sarah kicked off The Weather Channel’s morning show feature on mom bloggers, and has talked about sleep deprivation and parenthood (one and the same) with HuffPost Live’s Nancy Redd.

With an early interest in theatre, Sarah earned her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University’s School of Communication, and an MFA from the University of Alabama. After heading back to the classroom to study journalism, Sarah got her first job in news at CBS News/ 48 Hours from Susan Zirinsky.

Now living in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, with her husband Tom and two daughters, Sarah is grateful for the opportunity to write about the things she loves: health, parenthood, and theatre. She is proud to be one of MHA-NYC’s many faces of mental health and hopes to help others by openly talking about the struggles associated with mental illness as well as the life-changing support and help now within reach.

THE HONORABLE PATRICK J. KENNEDY is a former member of the U.S. House of Representatives and the nation’s leading political voice on mental illness, addiction, and other brain diseases. During his 16-year career representing Rhode Island in Congress, he fought a national battle to end medical and societal discrimination against these illnesses, highlighted by his lead sponsorship of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008--and his brave openness about his own health challenges.

The son of Senator Edward “Ted” Kennedy, he decided to leave Congress not long after his father’s death to devote his career to advocacy for brain diseases and to create a new, healthier life and start a family. He has since founded the Kennedy Forum, which unites the community of mental health, and co-founded One Mind for Research, a global leader in open science collaboration in brain research. Kennedy is also the co-author of “A Common Struggle,” which outlines both his personal story and a bold plan for the future of mental health in America.

Patrick lives in New Jersey with his wife, Amy, and their four children.

DENZEL “DJ” WILKERSON was born in Harlem and spent his upbringing there as well as in Jamaica, Queens.A promising student who was poised, polished and polite at home he says he was living a double life by the time he was 12.

By junior high school DJ had gotten into trouble at home, in school and with the law. By high school DJ was barely attending classes and after “snapping” spent three days in a hospital psychiatric ward on suicide watch.

DJ’s life turned around with the help of a friend named Alex who told him about the GED program at the MHA-NYC Adolescent Skill Centers. His decision to enroll himself at the age of 18 began a complete turnaround in his life. After two and a half years, DJ has a GED, two internships, a job at a major retailer and is proudly on a successful career path.

It is our honor to have DJ Wilkerson as our special guest tonight.
