(Excerpt from poem by Maya Angelou)
Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a womanPhenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.
In addition to many relatives and loved ones, Sis Thandi will be
missed by her husband Boyce Makwakwa, daughters
Nonhlanhla Onica and Duduzile Makwakwa, son Themba
Makwakwa, son-in-law Japie Masokameng and Nomsa
Maphiliba. She also leaves behind her granddaughters Mandisa
Makwakwa Masokameng and Sphesihle Makwakwa, and
grandson Mbulelo Maphiliba. She was preceded in death by her
parents, son-in-law, Sbusiso Nsibande and granddaughter

ObituaryA devoted wife, mother and grandmother shared her last laughs,
beautiful smile, and kisses as she quietly, in a manner true to her spirit,
delivered her final embrace.
Born Maud Thandi Cekiso on 09 July 1942 to Christina and Eric Cekiso in
Benoni; her family later moved to White City Jabavu where she grew up
and attended Morris Isaacson High School.
On 06 September, 1970 she was married to her husband, Mthunzi Cyril
Boyce Makwakwa at St. Paul Anglican Church in White City Jabavu.
Their 41-year marriage was blessed with three children and three
grandchildren.
As a young woman, she worked as a youth counselor and later
developed an interest in community organizing. In 1981 she co-
founded the Skills Development Cooperative (Co-op) whose mission is
to improve the quality of l ife for African women and their communities
through skills development and leadership training. The Co-op was first
housed in the church offices at Regina Mundi and later grew through
several spaces including its current location in Kliptown, she has t rained
hundreds of women were empowered to earn a living for their families
and many earned the coveted Italian Dressmaking and Designing
Certification.
At the time, in the early 80s, her work with the Co-op was considered
radical, but instead of succumbing to intimidation and harassment by
the apartheid regime, her commitment to the advancement of our
people and resilience to the intimidation only grew stronger. It is her
charismatic diplomacy that fueled the success of her work leading to
opening more Co-ops in other locations in Diepkloof, Daveyton,
Sebokeng, Krugersdorp and more.
Fondly known as Sis Thandi, this Phenomenal Woman will be
remembered by her children simply as Mawe.
