The Role of the Arts in Project BasedLearning with Young Children
This book is about “supporting children as theydevelop strategic approaches to meaning making” andunderstanding “how individual students interact withtext.” It is about using mindful language with children.This book deconstructs the orthodoxy of guidedreading. As such, it is about much more than guidedreading. Preventing Misguided Reading considers theGradual Release of Responsibility model, and reframesRead Aloud, Shared Reading, Guided Reading, andIndependent Reading in the continuum.
Over the course of sessions, we will read the book anddiscuss the practical implications for our ownclassrooms. Participants are expected to attend allsessions. A copy of the book will be blue bagged toregistrants prior to the first session, so please registerearly.

This workshop takes its inspiration from the pre-primary schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. This is thesecond workshop offered by Sylvia Kind and continuesthe conversation about Reggio inspired pedagogy andphilosophy. We will explore the role of the arts inproject-based learning. We will consider aesthetics asan activator of learning, the importance of poetic andimaginative ways of knowing, and will discuss therelationship of children's expressive and artisticlanguages to curriculum development. The focus willbe on gaining a deeper understanding of the centralityof the arts in project work with young children.
Dr. Sylvia Kind is an award-winning educator andexhibiting artist who teaches at Capilano University inthe Early Childhood Department. She has taught youngchildren in Montessori programs.

Historical Chinatown Tour
The Chinese in British Columbia are now the singlelargest ethnic group, comprising 20% of Vancouver’spopulation. It is very important for teachers to have abetter understanding of their Chinese students, parentsand colleagues, both culturally and historically. Forthis reason, this Chinatown tour will encompasslearning about the history of Chinese in Canada:
• Their contributions to the foundations ofCanada – the building of the CanadianPacific Railway and enlistment in the SecondWorld War, which led to the franchise
• How this history fits into the context of theChinese diaspora significant individuals –like local merchants Yip Sang and ChangToy, and the Father of Modern China, Dr.Sun Yat-sen
• Information about Chinatown’s heritagebuildings – Sam Kee’s world’s narrowestbuilding, the Chinese Freemasons and clanassociations
• Details about important events, the evolutionof the community, and how Chinatown hassurvived and developed into a cultural centrefor Vancouver tourism and education

We are all struggling with moving into the 21st centuryas our children seem to learn technology withunconscious ease. How do we keep up? How do weengage them differently now? I believe that we, asteachers, must move with them.

In August, Genocide Education Canada will be leadingteachers on a truly once-in-a-lifetime Holocaustmission to Lithuania, Belarus, and Poland -- where theHolocaust really took place.
Indeed, it was in those four countries where over 80%of all those Jews killed during the Holocaust had lived,and visiting a combination of Lithuania, Belarus, andPoland will provide teachers with an opportunity tobetter understand both the mass shootings that beganthe Holocaust (in places like Lithuania and Belarus)and the more industrial killing of the death camps inPoland that have come to symbolize the Holocaust. Infact, the Holocaust really began in Lithuania. Indeed,it was there that the systematic, successive liquidationof Jewish communities began, with the result that 80%of Lithuanian Jewry had been destroyed by the end of1941, just six months after the start of OperationBarbarosa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. It waswithin the first four days of the invasion of the SovietUnion that the first killing - 1,500 Jews - took place inKaunas.
Visiting a combination of Lithuania, Belarus, andPoland will also provide teachers with an opportunityto better understand an entire world that was destroyed-- the shtetls. It was in Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, andUkraine where the shtetls - the small towns in pre-World War II Eastern Europe that had large Yiddish-
speaking Jewish populations - were liquidated, therebydestroying an entire way of life. And, it was thatdestruction that was the essence of the Holocaust.
Visiting a combination of Lithuania, Belarus, andPoland will also provide teachers with opportunities tobetter understand the collaboration of local populationsin the Holocaust and the problem of memory andremembrance in those countries in the wake of thatcollaboration.
And, of course, visiting a combination of Lithuania,Belarus, and Poland will also provide teachers withopportunities to better understand the armed andunarmed response of Jews in the ghettos and aspartisans in the forest.
ITINERARY INCLUDES:
LITHUANIA • area of the former ghettos in Kaunas (Kovno)
and Vilnius, which were renowned for theirresistance activities
• site of the former Great Synagogue of Vilnius,which, according to legend, left Napoleonspeechless
• site of the Ponary Massacre, where, just outsideof Vilnius, some 70,000 Jews were murdered
• Sugihara House in Kaunas, a museum based inthe former Japanese Consulate, where ChiuneSugihara, the Vice-Consul for Lithuania,helped over 5,000 Jews leave the country byissuing transit visas
• former shtetl of Zhezhmer, where there stillstands a wooden synagogue building; forhundreds of years, such wooden houses ofworship were built from the abundant wood ofrural East Europe, but all but a small numberwere, like so much else of Jewish culture andreligion, lost during the Holocaust
• former shtetl of Butrimonys, where, inSeptember 1941, some 750 Jews weremurdered by Einsatzgruppen and Lithuaniancollaborators
• remains of a partisan camp in the RudininkaiForest
BELARUS • area of the former ghetto in Minsk, the largest

ghetto in Nazi-occupied Soviet territory;including the memorial on the spot where5,000 Jews were killed
• memorial at the former Maly Trastsianietscamp, where mobile gas chambers weredeployed to destroy the Jews of Minsk andsurrounding areas
• haunting memorial village at Khatyn, whichwas looted and burned to the ground inresponse to a nearby partisan attack; some5,000 Belarusian settlements were destroyed,and, in total, over 2,000,000 Belarusians werekilled (roughly a quarter of the population) --the bells at Khatyn ring every 30 seconds tocommemorate the rate at which Belarusianlives were lost throughout the Second WorldWar
• historic Mir, home to a formerly world-renowned yeshiva (religious academy);including a visit to the Mir Castle Complex, aUNESCO World Heritage Site
• historic Novogrudok, once the center of theGreat Duchy of Lithuania and home to some10,000 Jews -- half the population -- before theHolocaust; including a visit to the ruins of thecastle erected in the 14th Century
• heroic Brest Fortress complex, which hasbecome a symbol of Soviet resistance duringthe Second World War because of the steadfastresistance against German invaders that tookplace there in the opening days of the invasionof the Soviet Union
POLAND • area of the former ghetto in Warsaw, the largest
of the ghettos and site of the Warsaw GhettoUprising in the spring of 1943
• memorial at the former Nazi death camp ofTreblinka, where some 800,000 Jews werekilled
• former shtetl of Jedwabne, where, in July 1941,the Jews were killed by their gentile neighbours-- by being burned alive in a barn; this pogromis the focus of Jan T. Gross's book,"Neighbors" (2001)
• area of Kazimierz, the home to Krakow Jewsfrom the 14th Century until their destructionduring World War II; including the OldSynagogue, the country's oldest - 15th Centurysurviving synagogue building, area of the
former ghetto in Krakow • sites and scenes of Steven Spielberg's film,
"Schindler's List" (1993), including thememorial at the Plaszow camp

World Music Workshop: A Cross-curriculum Hands on Session
By planting trees and shrubs, and adding shade, seatingand heritage vegetable gardens, learning opportunitiescome alive. We make nature education fun andengaging because we want to plant the seeds ofecological stewardship in the next generation.
World Music has become one of the main influences ofpopular music and culture today. This workshop usesthis popular and diverse form of music to creativelylink modern languages, social studies and mathcurriculums.
Workshop Objectives: Listening, Communication,Diversity, Teamwork, Respect, Participation,Expression, Improvisation, Unity, Humanity,Culture, History, Civilization, Fractions,Subdivisions, Enjoyment. Length of Workshop: 1-2 hours
What you will see:• a wide variety of instruments• whole group participation• cooperative and active learning
What you will learn:• history, influences, and the development of
South American culture and civilization• to play percussive instruments using
techniques and rhythms from Africa, Brazil,Cuba & Spain
• fractions, subdivisions, ensemble dynamics &melodic rhythm patterns
What you will experience:• enjoyment and exploration of playing a
variety of genres with musical instruments• diversity: self expression, culture, musical
styles• music dynamics• a fun filled session
At the end of the workshop, participants will beable to:• apply practical ideas for improved class
listening/communication skills• understand diversity of different cultures• demonstrate teamwork, through ensemble
playing• communicate through different rhythm calls
and responses• express themselves through music• make connections between diverse genres of

Custom-designed art workshops available to teachers
of Grades K - 12 anytime throughout the school year.
Try a variety of art techniques, learn visual art basics,
or create projects based on a particular theme. Book
your school in for workshops on drawing, painting
techniques, printmaking, Artist Trading Cards, book-
arts, sculpture or any other art practice you may be
interested in. All workshops are designed with the
classroom in mind, to better facilitate successful art
lessons for your students.
Fee Schedule: Full day (9:30-3:00) $35/per person
Half day (9:30-12:00 or 12:30 - 3:00) $20/per person
Fee includes detailed Teachers Guides, all art
materials, and light refreshments.
