Theatre for Living Workshops

Theatre for Living has evolved from Augusto Boal's“Theatre of the Oppressed” and David Diamond’sinterest in and commitment to a ‘systems view’ of theworld. If we embrace the idea that a community is aliving organism, how do we consciously work with thelarger consciousness, using a primal language (thetheatre) to help it tell its stories? Once the story isacted onstage, the living community engages ininteractive Forum Theatre, creating a true community-based dialogue. Theatre for Living is aboutempowerment, about people being the experts in theirown lives and being able to use theatre to makechange. The process gives a community theopportunity to develop “emotional intelligence” usinga symbolic language to investigate alternativeapproaches to difficult issues. This is a step towardsdealing with challenging topics in an active andentertaining way, moving towards opencommunication within communities. HeadlinesTheatre conducts Theatre for Living workshops acrossB.C., Canada, and the world.

Applying Theatre for Living in the Classroom

Theatre for Living enhances the teacher’s vocabularyso they can approach teaching from a different type ofcreative perspective. It also allows for an expandedlearning experience for the student. Many teachers whohave undergone Theatre for Living training note thatpracticing the principles in the classroom empowersstudents in their individual learning experiences.Theatre for Living promotes and develops criticalthinking skills that students can apply, not only inevery school subject, but also in their non-academiclives. It encourages students to use their brainscreatively and supports their problem-solving abilities.Of course, Theatre for Living is not just beneficial forstudents, it is also a useful tool for teachers and allother positions in a school environment. Becauseparticipants choose their workshop’s focus, issues andchallenges that teachers, administrators, students, andparents experience within the educational setting areoften brought to light. It offers an opportunity, in anon-traditional context, for the issue to be explored ina creative and engaging way. Theatre for Living alsooffers opportunities for teachers and students to learnempathically. Regardless of the entrenched perspectiveof any individual, Theatre for Living can illuminate themotivation behind certain behaviours through concrete, theatrical exercises. The participants end upuncovering and deconstructing their own behaviours aswell as those of people they are often unable tounderstand. In this way, Theatre for Living canstimulate dialogue between parties that may feeldisconnected on the surface and help reach mutual understanding.
