CIPTEC aims to bring a new thinking and innovative solutions (service concepts and business models) for public transport, in order to create a favourable environment for PT growth.

The research will provide an overview and analysis of existing innovative approaches in various areas, giving emphasis, among others, on customer orientation, operational service concepts and synergies with other modes.

New innovative solutions will be also suggested and evaluated through collective intelligence methods. A toolbox as guidance for introducing and integrating innovative transport approaches/ services will be developed to support Public Transport operators/authorities. Moreover, policy and regulatory recommendations will be validated and presented.

The work will be accompanied by an online platform and by special workshops with stakeholders from different socio-economic contexts which will be tasked to apply model innovation strategic plans of sustainable and replicable value.

Aim

CIPTEC kick-off meeting, Thessaloniki 14-15 May 2015 3

Page 4: Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Transport Systems Research Group CIPTEC Collective Innovation for Public

1. To gather and analyse customer “intelligence” improving the understanding of urban public transport demand

2. To collect market intelligence to allow the demystifying of the urban public transport supply

3. Advanced motivational insights undergoing transport related behaviour

4. Mapping and identification of promising innovative approaches and co-creation of novel integrated solutions and business models for urban PT

5. Translation, validation and capitalization of results through an extended platform of motivated stakeholders for PT innovation

Main objectives

CIPTEC kick-off meeting, Thessaloniki 14-15 May 2015 4

Page 5: Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Transport Systems Research Group CIPTEC Collective Innovation for Public

In the frame of CIPTEC, we will:

1.study the demand side and how its needs are affected by the continuous changes

2.look to the supply in an attempt to recognise the needs and understand the distinct challenges PT providers face

3.identify and map promising existing innovation from PT and adjacent fields

4.initiate a collective intelligence approach to crowd-source and co-produce novel solutions to tackle underserved needs

5.survey public transport users to appreciate and measure the differences in preferences for the promising innovations

6.look for motivation triggers able to achieve behaviour change

7.provide a toobox aggregating our results to support stakeholders

8.invite the broader PT community and the social entrepreneurs to build on CIPTEC results

Overview

The three Phases that correspond to certain WPs/activities are:

Phase 1: The current innovation: Present situation and trends in Public Transport (WP1 & WP2)

it is based on the existing knowledge and the current situation utilising the experiences of experts

studies and analyses are based on extensive literature reviewing

existing knowledge and available sources, accompanied with the validation of the findings through limited field research (e.g. workshops and interviews with people considered experts in their special field)

Phase 1 refers both to the DEMAND and SUPPLY sides of PT It analyses current and future needs of the interested

parties involved in Public Transport Sector, (through WP1) It provides a mapping and evaluation of existing innovative

concepts, services and solutions (through WP2).

Page 9: Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Transport Systems Research Group CIPTEC Collective Innovation for Public

Phase 2: The future innovation: exploring the unknown and co-creating the new in Public Transport (WP3 & WP4) it goes beyond the current situation by developing in

collaboration innovative concepts and testing them using advanced marketing research

Phase 2 (WP3 and WP4) is the core research phase with a clear goal to venture beyond the state-of-the-art.

WP3 sets in motion an ambitious collective intelligence process that aims to generate innovation tailored on the identified needs of Phase 1

WP4 employs a standard method for preference analysis and hidden PT groups identification, used by the industry mainly (but not exclusively) for new product/service development

Phase 3: Capitalisation of the current and future innovation: consolidating findings and building on the results (WP5 & WP6) it builds on the findings and results of the two previous Phases

providing useful guidance, both at local – operational (micro level) and national – policy level (macro level)

Concerning the operational, local level (micro level), a toolbox will be developed (WP5) and validated (WP6),

while workshops involving social entrepreneurs and innovators will be organised to examine the potential for business exploitation of the identified and emerged innovative ideas for PT, and overcome barriers to innovation introduction (WP6)

At EU and national – policy level (macro level), policy recommendations will be composed and proposed (WP6)

Some points of the methodological approach:

1.Phases (1 & 2) [WP1 to WP4] run mainly in parallel and will feed the 3rd Phase [WP5 & WP6]

2.Implementation of WP5 & WP6 requires the conclusion or at least the execution of the biggest part of the work effort of the two first Phases

3.CIPTEC follows both a top-down (Phase 1) and bottom-up (Phase 2) approach to investigate needs, identify gaps and define potential solutions

1. Deadlines: Bearing in mind that Horizon’s rules for deliverables submission are rather strict and inflexible, and to guarantee the sufficient progress of work on time, we suggest to introduce INTERNAL SUBMISSION DEADLINES (approx. 15 days before the official one)

2. Quality: To ensure an adequate quality of the deliverables, a quality assurance plan and a deliverable review process will be established

3. Communication: To enhance coordination & communication, among partners, teleconferences will be scheduled for the WPs and tasks on a demand basis

4. Work’s further detailing: You may have noticed that the description of Work in some parts is quite generic, providing “some” level of flexibility and alternative or supplementary interpretation views

Critical aspects (1/2)

CIPTEC kick-off meeting, Thessaloniki 14-15 May 2015 21

Page 22: Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Transport Systems Research Group CIPTEC Collective Innovation for Public

Work’s further detailing:

This should be seen as an opportunity. It relies on us, as a partnership, to frame and specialise:

HOW work will be implemented; on WHAT EXTENT some aspects will be addressed; ON WHICH points emphasis will be placed

considering consortium expertise/capabilities, research interests and initial knowledge gaps identification

§Common language: we have to adopt a common definition of some terms, (such as: what is considered as INNOVATION in Public Transport), that are mainly used within project, in order to avoid confusion and misunderstanding.

§Jointly project activities: although many of us may have their own unique interests, somewhat or not related to project concept, we have to realise that CIPTEC is a jointly implemented project having its own defined objectives

Critical aspects (2/2)

CIPTEC kick-off meeting, Thessaloniki 14-15 May 2015 22

Page 23: Prof. Aristotelis Naniopoulos Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Transport Systems Research Group CIPTEC Collective Innovation for Public

1. Partners are asked to re-read carefully the description of Work, to understand the interrelation among WPs and to come up with proposals and suggestions on how tasks will be implemented in the best manner

2. Partners EMTA & EPF that comprise “umbrella” organisations covering the supply chain, accordingly, are strongly encouraged to disseminate project’s outcomes to their networks and target parties

3. Consultancies (e.g. MEMEX & MOBYCON) having long-term bonds with local PT agencies may monitor and support their work progress acting unofficially as key local contact points

4. Each partner shall define a contact person responsible for monitoring and responding to the daily communication, being dedicated in the project

5. Partners having long experience in EU projects participation are recommended to guide, support and encourage inexperienced ones
