THE NATURAL AND THE ORGANIC AS AN EVIDENCE

Zao is a makeup brand owned by Cosm’Etika France. It was co-founded in 2012 by three friends, David Reccole, Philippe Donnatand Yvan Rouvier. Lovers of nature and aware of the impact of ourconsumption on the environment, the three friends chose todevelop a brand of organic makeup aligning with their deepvalues. They gave birth to Zao, the first refillable make-up brand,100% natural and certified organic by Ecocert.

IT’S IN ASIA THAT EVERYTHING STARTS…

The inspiration came from Asian countries which one of thefounders, David Reccole has always been passionate about.Traveler by nature, he has travelled to India, Vietnam and China…

The idea was born from a Taiwanese friend who one day offeredhim a box containing a mechanical pencil and a bamboo pen.Seeing these two cylindrical objects with so thin walls, he had abrain flash! If it is possible to make a pen, it must be possible tocreate lipsticks and other bamboo makeup packaging. After his

return from Asia, the three friends were conquered by the idea andthe adventure of Zao began …

Convinced that a line of certified organic makeup must use anatural packaging, the elegance and modernity of bamboobecame obvious for David, Philippe and Yvan. All trees are carbonstorers but bamboo’s exceptional growth rate makes it a carbonstorer champion during its life-cycle. It allows Zao products todisplay a reduced carbon footprint.

Bamboo is also incorporated into formulas in the form of powder,leaf hydrosol or bamboo rhizome macerate. This plant is rich inorganic silica, an element naturally present in our body, whichparticipates in the process of producing collagen. And collagenpreserves the elasticity of tissues.

Zao is committed to offering make-up products with pristineformulas made of 100% ingredients from natural origin*. Withoutpetrochemical derivatives or synthetic preservatives, Zao productsare healthy for your skin. Our raw materials are obtained by a non-polluting and simple transformation of a plant or a mineral such asplant extracts, vegetable oils and butters, mineral pigments …Thanks to our ecological and ethical commitments, we obtainedthemention «Slow Cosmetic» in 2014.

The quality of our raw materials is also of paramount importance.That’s why we are always looking for new natural ingredients toguarantee you the best. Among these ingredients are themicronized silver powder which, in addition to being an excellentskin-friendly preservative, has amazing antiseptic properties.Although it is very expensive, we have chosen to use it in almost allof our products.

* Except our nail polish which are “8 free”. This means: without toluene, formaldehyde,

formaldehyde resin, synthetic camphor, dibutyl phthalate, paraben, xylene and rosin.

ORGANIC FARMING PREFERRED

All of our products are certified organic by Ecocert (according tothe Ecocert Greenlife and Cosmos Standard standards) andlabeled Cosmebio*.

From the beginning of the Zao adventure, we made the choice tofocus on raw materials from organic farming. By choosingingredients that are free of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, weminimize soil and groundwater pollution, protecting biodiversity andtaking care of your health.

Our makeup range also has an increased biocompatibility with theskin. Indeed, active ingredients contained in organic plants aremuch more concentrated than in plants from conventionalagriculture.

RESPECT OF ANIMALS

For the sake of respect of all living creatures, none of our finishedproducts and none of our raw materials are tested on animals.Thus, Zao products are certified Cruelty Free by Leaping Bunny.

We exclude the use of ingredients of animal origin, such asbeeswax and cochineal (red pigment). All Zao products are thus

Vegan certified by the Vegan Society.

In addition, our brushes are made of synthetic hair rather thananimal hair.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

Eco-design is at the heart of our thinking. That’s why our primarypackaging is bamboo. It is an ecological raw material because ithas a phenomenal growth without the need of any fertilizers orpesticides. Bamboo only needs 4 to 5 years to regenerate against aminimum of 30 years for a tree! The bamboo used for ourpackaging grows in endemic forests in protected areas.

Our secondary packaging is made of cotton or bamboo fiber. Ourbamboo products are sold in elegant cotton or bamboo fiberpouches to further protect them. These pouches can be reused forother uses, unlike cardboard cases which are immediately thrownaway a few seconds after purchase.

BAMBOO

Bamboo is the star ingredient of the Zao brand. Used in the form of

hydrosol, powder and macerate in Zao products, it is extremely rich

in organic silica whose external application helps maintain the

elasticity of our tissues and our skin.

ORGANIC SHEA BUTTER

Shea butter is extracted from shea nuts, a tree grown only in the

wild in the savannahs of West Africa. Its composition rich in fatty

acid gives it moisturizing and nourishing properties.

ORGANIC RICE POWDER

Rice powder is one of the oldest cosmetic ingredients. It has the

ability to mattify the skin without clogging the pores by adjusting the

secretion of sebum.

ORGANIC CASTOR OIL

This oil is interesting because it is emollient and allows to soften the

skin. It is also moisturizing and increases the water content of the

skin and keeps it soft and smooth.

Zao cosmetics are only formulated from natural ingredients, such as vegetable oils, waxes,

plant extracts (bamboo, shea butter, apricot kernel, corn, etc…), without the addition of

synthetic preservatives or fragrances. For a responsible make-up, the ingredients resulting

from organic farming are preferred and formulas are certified organic by Ecocert, therefore

respectful of the skin and the environment. The colors that make up the range are

exclusively obtained using natural pigments. The ingredients are chosen according to their

specific properties in order to combine the best makeup (colors, hold, rendering,

VEGETAL SQUALENE

Extracted from olive oil, vegetable Squalene is a derivative of

squalene, which is a natural component of human sebum. Its

excellent affinity with the skin, due to its similarity with natural

cutaneous lipids, and its emollient properties make it an ideal active

ingredient. It strengthens the cutaneous hydrolipidic barrier, softens

the skin and protects it from dehydration.

ORGANIC ACACIA GUM

The Acacia gum or arabic gum that comes from the resin secreted

by the Acacia Senegal tree, is used as an adhesive agent, to

improve the hold of Zao mascaras and eyeliner.

ORGANIC POMEGRANATE BUTTER

Today widely used in medicine, pomegranate extract not only

offers an excellent level of hydration but it is a valuable aid in cell

regeneration and in the fight against free radicals responsible for

skin aging. By increasing collagen synthesis, it prevents the

emergence of wrinkles.

MICRONIZED SILVER POWDER

Present in very small quantities, pure silver plays the fundamental

role of natural preservative thanks to its antibacterial and antiseptic

benefits for the skin.
